Anybody else play Sudoku before bed and then as you’re going to bed your brain is still playing Sudoku?
just me? Okay/j
I have a fundamental misunderstanding of math, apparently.
I was just talking with friends about the sudoku puzzle i was working on, in my phone. It has a detailed hint guide which includes advanced techniques like X-Wing and X-Y-Wing processes. I was just saying i can't grok the concept of the x-wing, specifically how to decide which four corners to choose (btw i think it's the outermost four, not just any four; i will test this hypothesis and discover the truth!).
She said, oh I've tried doing sudoku and it's too hard because i can't do math well enough. And i said, full of ignorance and vinegar, oh there's no math in sudoku. My other friend, who is an educator and took all the maths in college, got upset. She says, with force, that it is math. I'm intrigued and push back. I never use math to solve any of these logic puzzles. And in fact any symbol can be used due to the rules of the puzzle.
She gets mad. I ask for, like, some sort of definition. She finds several which confirm her argument that math is abstraction, math is logic, math is patterns, etc. I push back again, because anything can be a symbol, but numbers are concrete (the beginning of my ignorance, I believe), solid factual. Symbols can be used to represent numbers, but not the other way around. Math is equations, solid solutions to problems, non abstractions.
She's a bit more mad and yelly and wants to throw something at me. Now i pull back, mostly because she is being so passionate, but partly because I don't want my friend to actually be mad at me. Now i ask questions, because i want to understand. But she's still mad, still thinks I'm jibing her. So i shut the fuck up.
We're good. We had a nice hug when i had to leave at three o'fuck in the morning. She felt bad for yelling, and i assured her she was justified in her passion, and that it was okay, that i wasn't hurt by anything she said (i just don't like being yelled at; li'l bi' o' trauma innit?). I hope she's having a nice time with her girlfriend <3
But i still have a conundrum. 'Math as abstraction' i get, but 'math IS abstraction'? I think that's above my pay grade. So i gotta look into it.
The Wikipedia entry for sudoku states it is a logical combinitorial. Combinitorics is a subset of mathematics. I can accept that. But the idea that sudoku IS math is causing me pain. (That's what is meant by cognitive dissonance. After the pain subsides and you can exist with two conflicting ideas, you have resolved the cognitive dissonance, even though people say you still suffer from it.) But logic isn't math. And sudoku is primarily a logic puzzle.
Yes math also uses deduction and reason and all sorts of abstract thinking processes. But math is not those things. (to me) math is a Hard Science. You get absolute resolution from solving math problems. There are no vagaries (except for infinite sets, then you kinda have to hand wave the solution. Okay, within a finite set you get absolute answers. All praise to Mandelbrot!)
I read through Douglas Hoffstedder's (sp) Metamagical Themas and love the shit out of it. So many cool games and concepts. Oh. Now I'm meandering. Sorry.
I think I've said what i needed to. Certain concepts still confuse me. But I'm working on letting my ego go so i can learn a thing or two in my old age.
(One person interacts with my blog) oh wow I’m doing numbers on this site, I am going strong, I’m uhhh gimme a minute I need to make a math pun

based on this post, i began playing kakuro and i’ve completed seventeen puzzles in the past day so i believe i like it
sometimes when i fly i like to imagine that i’ve made a binding contract with the Sudoku God ™ and start a puzzle comically close to landing and if i cant complete the puzzle before the plan lands i fucking die.
I’m looking for this book in particular, can anyone help me find it?
You know what they say, when that sudoku calls… well…then you answer

not my usual content but would it be alright with my small community here if i do a little sudoku posting? i love sudoku, i have for years. i started doing them with my great grandmother growing up; she raised me to greatly appreciate the ability puzzles have to be able to pass the time when you need it while also giving the gift of slowing it down when you need it too. recently ive been doing them as more of a journaling addition. i have a 90s sudoku pocket gaming device that i bought on ebay recently. it has some issues with the screen but hopefully fixable. i got a cute new sudoku puzzle book that has huge margins that i use to write my worries in or use as brainstorming space for writing poems. anyways i thought sometimes i might post about sudoku a bit or add in some stats on how many im doing a day. to start, i got my new book on friday and i completed 10 puzzles, then on saturday i completed 5 and today i completed two in the book and freehanded two of my own making, which both unfortunately ended in unsolvables. i also tried an expert level blank killer sudoku on sudoku.com but i didnt get all the way through it before midnight, so i wont count that one. its 1:43 am here…goodnight
message me your sudoku book, website, or gadget recommendations or put them in my ask requests, i’d love to chat <3
I haven’t done much with posting about sudoku but I have a TikTok
we as a society have to make more actually good sudokus that aren’t just the same puzzle 100 times. like, add a thermometer, add a killer sudoku box, add a shaded region in which the numbers must add to 17, ANYTHING.
you wouldn’t believe how long this took me
……If I’ve ever told you I’m stressed and I don’t have time for something, feel free to dropkick me in the head
Look at what they’ve done to my boy
