hi hi ! so obviously getting enough sleep is one of the most important parts of doing well in school - it allows our brain and body to recuperate, ready to process and retain information more effectively the next day.
now i don’t know about anyone else but i personally have quite a lot of trouble sleeping - it takes me a long time to go to bed and even longer to fall asleep, and as a result i feel dreary and tired and irritable when i wake up the next day. so i had a browse around tumblr + the internet for some sleep tips and decided to put it all together in a masterpost ! it’s a mixture of articles, tumblr posts and other useful things but i hope this helps some people :-)

Hey guys! Today I wanted to make a post on how to have the best all-nighter possible. Now, obviously I would not recommend making this a habit, but at one point or another, all of us will forget that we have a major exam coming up or procrastinate writing an essay, so these are my tips on how to best tackle them :)
1. Set-up your study space.
Pick a table or desk that you’ll feel comfortable in but won’t be distracted in. It’s best if you avoid using your bed or a table in a busy space, as you can easily get too comfy/distracted. Once you decide on your location, bring all of your supplies there. Use this checklist to make sure you have everything you need.
2 pencils
2 pens
Pencil sharpener
Highlighters
White out
Mug or bowl (to put supplies listed above in)
Index cards
Lined paper
Calculator (if you’re doing arithmetic)
All of your textbooks you’ll be using
After you’ve gathered all of your supplies, write out a to-do list of every topic/assignment you need to complete. If you want, make it look fun with banners, arrows, designs, etc. Set up all of your supplies so that your space is clean and organized. Once you’ve finished all of this, you’re ready for part 2.
2. Get yourself ready
Make sure you’ve eaten something before you start your study session. Hunger will only make you feel sleepy and cranky. Once you’ve eaten, take a quick cold shower to refresh yourself and wake yourself up. Put on entirely new clothes (including bra and underwear) and make sure that they’re both comfy and breathable. It’s tempting to put on your favorite PJ’S, but wearing fluffy pajama pants and a huge sweater can make you really sleepy and a bit too relaxed. I personally like wearing a tank top with either pajama shorts or joggers, but really just wear whatever will make you feel relaxed but not tired.
If you have long hair, pull it into a high ponytail or bun. If you’re wearing make-up, wash it off. You need to feel alert and fresh.
If you are feeling a bit sleepy, make iced coffee by mixing cold coffee, cream, sugar, and chocolate syrup. Make sure you also have a bottle of ice water, a pack of gum, and a small snack with you while you study. That way if you get hungry, you have healthy snacks that will help you stay concentrated.
3. Get started!
Find a playlist on Spotify or a Pandora station that will help you concentrate. I personally like the “Electronic for Studying” on Pandora and “Deep Focus” on Spotify.
Do whatever is the longest/hardest first so you can get it out of the way.
If you’re reading or studying for a test, the best way I find to remember what I’m learning is to use an index card or piece of paper, and summarize each paragraph into one or two sentences. Keep one extra paper for any key notes. Once you finish a chapter, read each card/paper out loud to yourself. Repeat each paper out loud 3 times and move on to the next chapter. Keep doing this until you’ve finished what you have to read. Once you’ve finished your reading, turn the notes you wrote into something creative. I usually choose a song, but it can be an artistic graph, a story, anything you know you’ll remember. If it’s song, you can even record yourself singing it and play it on repeat. This method is great for having fun while studying.
4. Set goals
You need to be reminding yourself of how much you’re accomplishing, so set mini goals for yourself instead of one big one. Say for example, you’re homework consists of reading 2 chapters of Chemistry, completing 3 days worth of Geometry homework, and typing up a paper on Ancient Greece (I know it’s random). Instead of saying to yourself “I need to finish all of this in 4 hours” you should instead say, “In 1 hour I can finish Chemistry, then I’ll take a 15 minute break, then for another hour and a half I’ll complete my Geometry homework, then I’ll take a 20 minute break, and then for the rest of the night I can write and edit my paper, and then I can go to sleep!”. This mindset allows you to feel accomplished even if you don’t get to everything on your list. If you’re working hard, you’ve achieved something!.
5. Staying awake
DRINK. COLD. FREAKING. WATER.
Make sure that you’re drinking cold water!!! The coolness will keep you alert and the hydration is good for concentration/mood.
Chewing mint gum is important too. If you have a test the next day, try even chewing gum while you study, and then chewing the same gum while you take the test. The flavor will jog your memory and help you remember what you learned more quickly/easily.
If you find yourself falling asleep, do 10 jumping jacks and splash cold water on your face. Do what you need to to stay alert and focused.
6. Know your limits
Sometimes you can’t finish all of your homework. And that’s okay. If you were pushing yourself to do the best that you can, that’s all you can do in the end.
I’d recommend putting a time limit on yourself. By 3:00am, you need to stop working and go to sleep. Any longer and you’re doing more harm than good to yourself.
If you feel your head aching and your eyes are getting heavy, GO TO SLEEP. If you’re getting anxiety/panic attacks over your grades, stop working and take the time to calm yourself down. Your physical/mental health is more important than anything relating to academics.
7. The next morning
Hopefully you’ve gotten at least 3-4 hours of sleep. If not, try to sleep whenever possible. On the bus, before class starts, anytime.
The first thing you should do is take a warm shower so you can wake yourself up and feel relaxed. If you have the time, pamper yourself a little and wash your face, style your hair some, shave, whatever will make you feel calm and fresh. For clothes, wear something comfortable if you can. I’d recommend leggings, a sweater, and boots.
EAT BREAKFAST. Seriously, this is so important. Make yourself coffee or tea as well, to give you an energy boost. Try eating something with fresh fruit if you can.
Don’t pressure yourself. You studied so much the night before, so only briefly review your notes. Don’t force yourself to repeat last night. Take deep breaths, look over your index cards, maybe listen to your song, and that’s all. You did all you can, and you’re going to do great!

concept playlists;
you’re lying on mossy forest floors, slowly transforming into a nymph, your fingers are turning into flower vines, your limbs are bleeding honey & growing thick skins of sepia bark, wings sprout in between your shoulder blades. your breath sounds like the wind. fireflies litter the air above you
you’re hold up in an abandoned church, outside there’s a raging storm & a horde of zombies roaming around, pressing up against the entrance doors. you & a small band of survivors are staying inside for the night in hopes to ride the bad weather out. you take first watch & listen to these tunes on an old ipod while everyone else tries to get some rest & the undead crawl outside, awaiting the taste of human flesh.
you’re in your boyfriend’s pickup. he’s asleep in the passenger seat, you’re driving without a destination in mind & you have the window down as you let the cool night air whip against your face in a state of pleasant delirium you’re on a rooftop somewhere, there’s 5 am air on your skin, streetlights glint like coins at the bottom of wishing wells from where you sit. you’re feeling peaceful for the first time all week
you’re lying in the middle of a crop circle forty miles from your grandma’s old house waiting for aliens to come and abduct you
it’s four pm in the afternoon and you’ve got your head in the lap of the only boy you’ve ever loved & you’re reading jane eyre & he’s sipping on tea & it’s the kind of weather where it’s just warm enough for you to pretend it’s summer & it’s drizzling & you’re listening to the rain beat softly against the windowpanes you’re curled up in bed as it pours outside, there’s a citywide blackout and the last candle you had left has finally blown out, but you feel strangely at peace within the warm, all-consuming dark
you’re making out in the bathroom of a house party with someone that makes you feel like you’ve swallowed the sun you’re standing amidst a city you burned to the ground. the apocalypse has come & gone. all that’s left is ashes & mortar & sad bones but you’re feeling empowered. a slow smile creeps up your lips as you realize how you’ve always wanted to watch the world burn you wander into wonderland and now you’re suddenly being crowned fairie queen, apparently there’s a prophecy waiting to be fulfilled it’s mid morning but it’s dark outside from the rain. you thought the tapping on the window was from the rain but it’s actually a crow that flickers out of sight when you look directly at it you’re sipping on cherry cola by the pool on a lazy sunday & you’re feeling younger than you’ve ever been you’re summoning old ghosts in an abandoned parking lot on a smoggy thursday night

messy old notes, like my life tbh
15 things students should appreciate
1. the first time you use your new markers and stationary 2. sitting outside in the sun during a break between classes 3. a good coffee-to-go in your hand during a long lecture at uni 4. unlimited free books in your university library 5. student discount while shopping in many big shops (like forever21) 6. a neatly organized and healthy filled lunchbox, prepared the night before 7. classical music in the background while studying 8. walking through the university hallways surrounded by busy crowds of motivated young people with big dreams 9. being fortunate to be able to study 10. professor’s with quirky personalities and jokes 11. endless possibilities, still waiting in the future 12. cosy study sessions with friends 13. creativity in fashion, food and home decor because of little money 14. sleeping in and spending time at home/in your dorm because you don’t work a full job yet 15. dinner nights that involve cooking with fellow student friends and drinking cheap wine on weekdays
ways to study for exams that are actually productive
use actual note cards for vocab. yes, apps like quizlet are dandy when you’re on the go, but actually physically writing out each note card helps put the information into memory faster than typing them.
visual learner? make charts and diagrams. they don’t have to be pretty. the lines don’t have to be perfectly straight. it doesn’t have to be photogenic. but if it helps you learn, do it.
after you take notes (in class or at home/from your text book), write down possible quiz questions about the material on the next page while it’s still fresh in your mind. later on when you’re studying for the test, use these questions to gauge what specifics out of that chapter you need to work on the most.
start sooner rather than later. i know, you’ve heard this a million times from every teacher ever. but it’s legit. especially as you get into harder level classes and college courses because there is literally so much material that the tests cover that you simply can not accurately learn all of it over night. instead, start about 10 days in advance (but of coarse, the sooner the better).
studying doesn’t have to be a big giant study session that takes hours. if you start far enough in advance, study sessions can be around an hour, hell even 45 minutes is a good. if you go too long in one study session your brain will be fried and studying will be pointless because your brain won’t be processing any of it. that’s why it’s important to take breaks and not just cram for 5 hours the night before an exam.
actually study. hold yourself accountable and make your education a priority. if you have homework and studying to do, make it a priority over going partying or watching tv. there will be another party. you can dvr your show. you can’t take your test on a later day because you don’t feel ready. so be ready.
be careful with study groups. if you have a study group with all of your best friends, lets face it, you’re going to end up spending more time talking about harry styles and supernatural than actually studying. it’s better to have a study group with people who are your friends, but not best friends. and it’s better to keep it between 5-7 people so that everyone can be involved.
if the material is just super confusing and you can’t seem to understand it no matter how hard you study, it’s not you. it’s the way you were taught it. each teacher teaches a bit differently, and maybe their style of teaching just isn’t for you. if this happens, find a way that explains it the best for you. for example, if chemistry is just super confusing for you, try watching the Crash Course chemistry videos on youtube or have a friend explain it to you. this will give you a completely different perspective on the material and will help you understand it better.
at the end of the day, remember that everything will be okay. studying can be stressful, especially if it’s in a class that you struggle in. but i promise you that you are not the only one who struggles sometimes in school, it’s a part of being human. as long as you actually put in an effort and try your best, be proud of yourself. take a deep breath. and remember: you got this.
welcome to my studyblr! i’m making this blog to inspire myself to be more organized, efficient and productive, so here’s a little about me for reference:

types of study breaks for every situation
if you realize you’ve been studying for hours: grab a snack to refuel your body and watch a sitcom to refuel your brain. then back to the books.
if you’re feeling stressed out: take some deep breaths, text your friends, maybe stare at a wall for a few minutes. gather yourself.
if you can’t seem to focus: get moving and get outside. take out the garbage, check your mail box, maybe walk your dog. just get moving and get fresh air. it’ll help bring you back.
if there’s something else going on in your life and you can’t get it off your mind: write down what’s going through your head, sort of like a diary entry. it’ll help you work things out.
if you’re just mentally and physically exhausted: set a timer for 25-30 minutes and take a nap. any longer and you’ll hit REM and you’ll wake up feeling just as tired. once you wake up, get some caffeine in you.
if the material is boring as hell: find another way to study. see if there’s a crash course video online about it or draw out what you’re trying to learn in diagrams and pictures to make it fun.
if people around you won’t shut up: listen to some music. soundtrack and classical music is always good because they won’t absorb you as much as music with lyrics. white noise (like ocean waves, rain sounds, etc.) also works.
if you only half understand a concept: call/message a friend who’s not in the class and try to teach the material to them. this will help you mentally work through the material and will help you remember it as well.
