Anathem is a YA novel that really really really wants to be hard scifi but there is actually no number or length of meandering philosophy discussions about quantum consciousness and alternate universes that will distract me from asking why a teenage girl is in charge of organizing multiple major world events. And she's not even the protagonist.
My summer project for myself is to make a collection of 16 of these embroidered thimble rings (called kaga yubinuki), these are my first 2 ^^
using this as an opportunity to add this link to this post too:
Thank you for coming back to my blog after so long a leave (again). I plan to update my blog at least once a month but as you see it has be
really clear, written instructions that explain the why as well as the how. there's a lot of beautiful, simple designs on her blog as well!
dreamed I was an elf who befriended a baby giant centipede in a steampunk mansion museum, d&d style. So you know, the centipede was only maybe 7-8ft long. There was also a Jörmungandr of a full adult centipede, so everyone was very glad I had managed to become the centipede's favored babysitter.

"only a poor artisan blames his tools" is such bullshit, in almost every imaginable line of work the quality of the tools you have access to plays a massive role in the quality of the end product, sometimes in excess of the role played by individual skill! For example, some people have to code in javascript
New leather pattens post!
I made a pair of leather pattens three years ago, but back then we were more experimenting, and after 3 years of service, my pattens are so worn that I doubt they would survive another event
So, last weekend I visited my shoemaker friend and we started to make new ones (because he also wanted a pair)
Last time when I made them with another friend, we made the pattern for it ourselves, but this time, we used the actual pattern of a real find to base the shape on
specifically this one!
This is from the book "Archaeological Footwear II: Sandals, Pattens and Mules, from the Roman, Mediaeval and Modern periods" by Marquita Volken, THE expert of medieval footwear in Europe, who I had the pleasure to meet a few years ago at an event. I can very much recommend her books, because not only are they historical analysis and finds, but also she remade a lot of the finds and explains how they were constructed. So 10/10!
so we took the pattern and increased it to match our foot size, and after a few smaller changes made our own patterns for it
and then we started cutting the leather. We used a very thick leather for the soles and then a slightly thinner layer for the strips
I also changed the front pattern to an even simpler one
we found one historical source for that crossed pattern that I ended up using. We then did some cheating and glued the soles together for stability (i want them to last a bit longer than 3 years)
and we drilled holes. Then I stitched the soles together
and with that we reached the maximum images, so next update in reblog
After that, we glued a final bottom sole onto the patten, which means that the thread is not exposed and thus protected. If I run the lowest sole through, I can replace it, instead of having to remake the whole thing
And then to the straps
first I made these kind of holes that go from.the top to the side, to sew on the straps
and tested them with medieval shoes, and they fit
Next step is sewing on the buckle, but I am not quite there yet. I am reusing the buckles from my old pattens for this
reading a post about robin (batman) and thinking it was about robin (contra dance role). no mental dissonance until the very end of the post. right side dancers fight crime and tell jokes; this is known and accepted as true.
every moment of every day i am thinking about this tiktok
Lumpfish come in a variety of shapes and colors.
[He scoops up the fish, it spits water and he turns it toward the camera]
This one is stumpy and green. Very beautiful, very powerful.
[He picks up another fish and turns it toward the camera]
This is what a normal lumpfish looks like. It is more elongated, but still a vibrant blue color. Very beautiful, very powerful.
[He picks up another fish and turns it toward the camera]
This is one of the stumpiest ones we have. Its hump is very high. It is very stumpy, but yet very beautiful, and very powerful.
[He pans over a lot of fish, all looking up at the camera]
My fish army is ever growing, and soon I will over throw the world. Very beautiful, very powerful.
trying to figure out what I think about Radiant Star, like: I would love a really angry book from this combination of author/narrator actually. kind of feels like reading a historian who wants to start screaming about atrocities being very politely strangled. pretty sure that's on purpose, but also, I feel the screaming would be very good and I would like to read it.

Dropped off the three colored scroll printouts I did today, and my vicereine (baron for you non-crown-province scadians) immediately lured me into taking four more. The thing is, the East has a tradition of actual hand drawn scrolls much moreso than printouts, so I feel slightly traitorous doing these, but also, coloring books are fun. Watercolors on a printout does not require me to turn my brain back on after a long day at work.
I feel like the right compromise here would be for me to design my own reusable line art, maybe with a few sections that can be randomized. But guess what. That needs focus. And I, person of limited focus that I am, need to be making clothes for Pennsic.
I do understand why she wants me to keep doing these though.
