i think maybe the biggest thing that people misunderstand about warrior cats is the belief that "if we do not see it happening explicitly on screen, then it did not happen" which is a little confusing considering there's like 1,500 characters who cannot all possibly be having intricately detailed lives played out for everyone to see.
like one of the biggest examples i see this with is fathers in warrior cats. and to be abundantly clear. i think fathers are written horribly in warrior cats. we HARDLY ever see them interact meaningfully with their kits and usually when they do it's through a very heteronormative sort of "strong protector dad and soft worrying wife" lens (think ferncloud and dustpelt 99% of the time). but i think when we don't see fathers interact with their kits much, many people's assumption is that they are bad fathers (e.g. graystripe with the B squad). and i suppose my problem with this is that it's such a bad way to approach. well. media? like ok to be clear and to get it out of the way, yes, you are 100% absolutely allowed to think graystripe is a bad father. if you want to look at the books and say "well, we don't have very many scenes of graystripe interacting meaningfully with his kits, so i see him as an absent and negligent father" then that is your god given right. i think my problem is the people who seem to take this as canon. when in reality, there's just so much of thunderclan background characters' lives we don't see. graystripe Could be interacting with his in the background, but it's not relevant to any of the stories that the authors want to tell, so it's not really shown. IN ADDITION TO the books are written in a heteronormative lens that probably values a man's interaction with his children lower than a woman's and so are written out less.
for a sort of comparable counter-example, we hardly see squirrelflight interact with foxpaw at all despite us being witness to the entirety of foxpaw's apprenticeship, but i don't think anyone make the assumption that she was a bad mentor to him because of that. she just had a different role to the plot in that arc that we were more narratively focused on .
and i know that this is warriors and there ARE plenty of character-building scenes with background characters, especially in power of three + oots. it just all depends on what the narrative wants to focus on for the characters' arc, and sadly, very few of male characters arcs focus on them being a father, or even have their fatherhood impact much of their life at all, unlike the female characters, many of whose roles seem to revolve around motherhood. what i'm trying to say here is that it's a writing issue, not a character flaw. and many people seem to demand it to be a character flaw, and if you don't view that as canon, you're wrong
Still floored at the fact that "mapleshade baby trapped appledusk" was at any point considered a legitimate take in the wc fandom as if that isn't one of the most misogynistic interpretations of the books that I've ever heard
we've definitely posted about this before but if i see one more person act like the only forms of childhood trauma that exist are abuse from family or sexual assault i will actually start crying and it will be so so so loud everyone will hear it from every corner of the earth

They could never make me hate you, complex female character whose reaction to trauma was not pretty and digestible like how people think it should be.

i was training a young person at work, and she referred to sexual assault as "SA" out loud, and i immediately was like, "no, it's sexual assault, call it what it is," bc idgaf if the algorithm overlords have taught y'all that you should fear direct language, how tf do any of you expect to ever address real issues with any amount of seriousness if you can't even say the words? imagine an advocate looking a sexual assault survivor in the eyes and asking "did he grape you?" it's absolutely fucking absurd, but these young interns and new hires are coming into an environment where we deal with survivors of all different kinds of abuse, and they're coming with the mindset that the words are as bad as the actions, and that makes them shitty at the job and look juvenile af
i HATE self-censorship for a lot of reasons, but being in crisis work makes it even more frustrating. who are you censoring for? like i am being so fr, WHO are you censoring for? have you even thought it through? people who have been raped know that they have been raped. if someone attempts suicide or is grieving someone who did, saying "sewer slide" isn't going to protect them from any of the feelings. a murder victim's family isn't going to feel better bc you said "unalived" instead of murdered. if anything, it's just extremely invalidating and othering. it's saying "what happened to you is so bad that i won't even say the word," which is NOT trauma-informed care. you are not protecting survivors/victims when you self-censor. the ONLY things you protect when you self-censor are the puritanical ideologies that are being encouraged by rich fascists who want your money and obedience
say the fucking words, guys. just say the goddamn words before i go insane!!!
So tired of everything being called slop
