i don't think ryland grace has any self-awareness about gender or sexuality ever but by the force of SHEER coincidence he unknowingly bought an aroace-themed shirt at a san francisco thrift store simply bc he liked the colors. he wears the shirt around stratt's vat and people tell him "oh, congrats!" and he's like "yeah the astrophage trials have been going really well :)"

God it’s so fucking funny that the copyright trial scene exists in the book. Literally the one scene where Grace isn’t present or narrating and it’s entirely so Stratt can have a “fuck you I’m doing what I need to save the goddamn world” moment. Andy Weir straight up broke his entire framing device solely so he could give Stratt this moment.

Thinking about the deep secondhand embarrassment from the repetitive tapping scene and how it's caused by Rocky not understanding that Grace can't immediately tell there's an object in the room just by how the room sounds.

Thinking about how it’s almost immediately echoed in reverse by the tape measure scene, caused by Grace not understanding that Rocky can't tell the differences in how surfaces reflect light.

Do you understand how much it meant to me that Stratt was never seen in anything other than comfy loose business clothes in the movie? Her every outfit is layers, loose pants, a turtleneck sweater, scarves. Ever article of clothing is about her comfort alone, literally not one bit of it serves any other function.

Do you understand how rare that is? What that means? To me and probably every other person who was raised to feel like their body was a display model only? Other characters that might have comfy outfits inevitably have this moment where they suddenly dress like a bombshell, like it's their debut as a romantic candidate.

But not Eva Stratt. She got to be interesting purely for the person she is. We got to see HER. Focus on her character and not her body. To this DAY it blows my mind. Every time I see her dressed this way that feeling of being bowled over by it renews.

Eva Stratt continues to take my breath away for all the right reasons. That woman is ethereal and I can say that about her character without every having known what her body even looks like. Thank god.

#project hail mary #to me it’s also incredibly useful visual storytelling #she doesn’t dress to impress or intimidate. and by doing so she shows that she doesn’t answer to anyone and that they all answer to her #it’s not just a workplace for her it’s likely where she lives at this point #by dressing so comfortably amidst people who are in charge of saving the world. it shows how comfortable she is with it #she’s soft spoken. she dresses cozily. yet she commands the room. you’re in her house.
