Nothing- A Young Ashes Story
Story written based off of A Song About Nothing by MALINDA
Words: 1,694
This story contains explicit language, accidental injury, description of injury, blood, extreme poverty, homeless youth, fantasy prejudice, and reference to implications of harming youth.
The streets of my city get quiet as the sun sinks lower and lower beyond the horizon. I slide off my perch, my tail balancing me until my legs remember that they have a job to do. I drag my hands through the tangles of my hair in an attempt to smooth it out. My hand catches at the same time my legs feel solid enough under me to move again.
“Oh, come on…” I grumble at the tangles my fingers got caught in. Maybe Wera was right and I need to cut it short.
Unwilling Union: Road Block
First | Part 7 | Part 9
They're just trying to do a nice thing.
Words: 1,858
This story contains self-doubt, explicit language, fantasy violence, and blood.
A flier sitting on the desk keeps catching Cal’s attention. They smile fondly with a soft laugh remembering the kid that near shaking knocked on their door and didn’t even get a word in before they ran away. They know they don’t interact with the townsfolk all that often, but they’re not that terrifying, right? They suppose they don’t usually participate in the town’s festivities. When was the last time they left their house?
Cal rests their quill in its spot and picks up the flier, looking over the information for the fall festival. It will be in the evening, so they’ll be able to go with the sun setting earlier this time of year. What do they even do at a fall festival? They look to the bottom of the piece of paper to see the date. Would Lark want to go? She’ll arrive soon before it and it would be rude to leave her here alone. Cal doesn’t know if they’d know what to do if she’s doesn’t go with them. The townsfolk don’t know them anymore and they can’t eat their treats. What is there even to do at a festival? They’ll offer to Lark at least. It could be fun.
Writing Resources to use instead of AI
For coming up with character names:
Behind the name (my absolute fav)
Allows you to choose the origin of where you want the name to be from, whether you want a more feminine vs masculine vs androgenous name (as voted by users), random surname generator, and clicking on the name gives you important info like if there are any famous people with the same name, where it’s from, how common it is, and how people tend to see it, etc.
You can also search their name database by letter or meaning or origin, so if you know you want a character who has a name/surname that starts with an A from Ireland, there’s a whole list for you to choose from.
Census sites
Especially useful if you’re looking for a name from a specific place and/or time period. Just search “(country) census (year)” and you’ll find a database of real people who lived in that place at that time. No one can ever call your names unrealistic again.
For coming up with place names:
Fantasy name generator
This site can basically come up with any name for any person, place, or thing you might ever need. There are also specific generators for different fandoms if you’re looking to make an OC in an established world.
For finding that one word on the tip of your tongue:
One Look Thesaurus
This is my go-to. Not only can you find synonyms like a regular thesaurus, but you can also describe words like “unhappy smile” or “quiet laugh” to find the more specific word you’re looking for.
For coming up with ideas:
Word cloud
When I need to inspire a new idea, I write down all the things I’m interested in (hauntings, academia, lesbians, etc.) and put them into a word cloud to shuffle them next to each other. Sometimes seeing a concept in a new context can spark new ideas!
WWF Discord
This is my discord channel (shameless plug) for when you need to brainstorm off other people but don’t have anyone irl to talk to. We’re also happy to read and give feedback on writing, answer writing questions, or just chat!
For visualizing places and characters:
Pinterest can at times be a bit too sterile for my tastes, but if you use the right words, you can find more realistic photos of places. For example, adding “aesthetic” after basically any word will bring up a more broad collection of photos to help you flesh out places.
This is also a great way to find photos of people and fashion to help visualize characters. I’m bad at describing clothes, so I usually collect photos of outfits to help me know what my characters are wearing. Searching up “character inspiration” will collect more interesting photos and drawings of people who might not exactly be of our world.
(However, to make Pinterest not show you AI results, you have to go into your settings and check the “reduce AI” box. Luckily, it does mostly work.)
Death to Stock
Like pinterest but completely AI free (hooray!) Only drawback is that you have to pay a monthly subscription (about $20 CAD).
Cosmos
Very similar to pinterest but slightly more "artsy". I'm not super familiar with this one but I believe all the photos are human and you can save them and create collections with a free account.
Dupe Photos
Royalty-free stock image site with very Pinterest-core photos!
Minecraft
If you haven’t built your entire fictional city in Minecraft instead of writing, why not? It’s fun.
The Sims
This one is dual purpose because you can not only create your characters in Create a Sim, but you can design their houses. If you really want to go for it, you can bulldoze all the lots in your town and build your world from scratch.
For checking grammar:
Grammar Girl
Easy to follow definitions and examples, and if you learn better by listening, every article comes with a podcast to follow along with instead.
Grammar Monster
This one is my favourite for checking grammar rules because there’s tons of examples in graphics that helps for any situation.
Reedsy
Among other things, reedsy can connect you to professional editors within your budget.
For writing advice:
One Stop for Writers
This one was recommended from my discord channel and has all sorts of tutorials and resources for the writing craft.
My Blog Directory
Another shameless plug, but if you need writing advice on something specific, you can search through my directory to see if it’s there. If it isn’t, you can always send me an ask about it!
For an alternative to Google Docs:
Ellipsus
Think google docs but without AI. Yay!
(will update this list with any more suggestions or resources I discover 😊)
A great resource

you say "that sentence is grammatically incorrect" i say "it sounds like the internal monologue of a man unraveling in a fluorescent-lit hallway and that’s the point"
Unwilling Union: Dining and Dancing
First | Part 6 | Part 8
An evening out.
Words: 1,496
This story contains depictions of food and light sensitivity.
The lovely quiet and crisp night disappears as soon as the door booms closed. Cal tenses as they take their first step forward, unintentionally dragging the fae who’s elbow is locked in theirs forward. Despite the harsh movement Lark seems to step forward gracefully as if nothing was awry.
“Sorry.” Cal murmurs to their left as they take their next step more carefully. The quiet clack of the cane in their right hand rhythmically moving with them steadies their nerves for the upcoming gathering as they move ever closer to it. They’re not sure if Lark heard them since she didn’t reply, but matches them step for step with a similar click clack of her heels.
guys i’m so sorry to say this but exercising and indulging in hobbies rather than scrolling on your phone for 200 hours actually does improve your mood and overall mental health, this has deeply upset me more than anyone
In 2012 I painted the top image: Rise
In 2026 I am saddened to have to repaint this update: Fall
I started following Yuumei back in 2011-2012 when I was in high school. Her painting "Rise" was such a huge inspiration for me. Now, to see "Fall", I cannot help but feel that this is an important, tragic, and monumental moment in our history as Americans - as a world.
Thank you for painting "Fall", Yuumei. I think it's really important and powerful, even if it breaks my heart to see such an important painting I've loved for over a decade update in such a way.
Creative block sucks. What do you mean I want to do something but when I sit down to do it it doesn't happen?

Yesterday, Disney asked users on Threads to use Disney quotes to show how they are currently feeling. To say that this did not go according to Disney's plan would be an understatement 😂
They deleted the thread, but they should know that this doesn't help because now the videos are making their rounds 🤣😂
Random Ramblings: Goodbye
Words: 523
This is a rambling specifically inspired by The Chaos Protocol, but does not technically reference any specific spoilers. That said, the biggest inspiration for this came from the Arc 4 Special: the mortal profane.
Content warnings for this ramble include references of emotional turmoil, denial, trauma, and loss.
What does it mean to truly say goodbye?
Very stupid that I can't take the muscles out of my neck & upper back & beat them with a meat tenderizer. I think that would fix me
hi!!!!! i’m an actual librarian who has encountered this very situation before!!!!! and while i commend & admire op’s willingness to help another patron, this is why you really really should have a library worker, not another patron whom you don’t know, assist you with tech & information related issues in the library!!! because we are trained in how to handle this exact sort of thing
tl;dr: use proton mail. i’m not gonna gatekeep this info. it does not require a cell phone number, so it’s my go to for patrons in this situation!!! while i am acutely aware of the harm done by the digital divide & how many people are getting left behind as our world gets increasingly tech dependent, the situation is not hopeless. there ARE provisions in place to help the people most affected, and those provisions are usually wearing glasses & cardigans & sitting behind the circulation desk
librarians are not glorified bookworms!!!! we are information professionals who are highly trained in how to handle these sorts of seemingly impossible binds!!!! ask us for help!!!!!! as i always tell my patrons, that’s what i get paid the big bucks for
I love characters who are extremely hypercompetent and simultaneously massive losers

Word Upgrades & Adverb Replacements
Not banning adverbs, just helping you avoid the icky ones.
1. Swap the adverb, not the meaning. Instead of: “He whispered angrily.” Try: “He hissed the words between his teeth.”
2. Replace “said” only when it changes tone. Not every line needs flair! But sometimes: • mused (thinking aloud) • snapped (tension) • muttered (quiet frustration) • chirped (bright and quick)
3. Alternatives to ‘almost’ that aren’t icky. Objects: brushing against, bordering, adjacent to Actions: poised to, ready to, about to States: akin to, resembling, not quite Misc: a whisper from, at the cusp of, within reach of
Example: Instead of: “She was almost smiling.” Try: “A smile hovered at the edge of her mouth.”
Punctuation as a Writing Superpower
Punctuation is mood.
1. Em-dash = drama or interruption. “The decision — reckless as it was — already felt final.”
2. Semicolon = linked thoughts. “The storm hammered the walls; inside, her hands wouldn’t stop shaking.”
3. Colon = emphasis or explanation. “He wanted only one thing: answers.”
4. Ellipses = hesitation or fading thoughts. “I thought I saw someone behind the shed, but…”
5. Intentional fragments = emotional punch. “The letter fell from her hands. Silence. Then breathing. Then panic.”
