Pepper has essentially locked Tony out of his own company. Changed passwords, blocked Tony’s IP addresses and threatened anyone in the company from even thinking about helping Tony get a new user or gain any access.
Sure, maybe Tony hasn’t been around much lately anyway. So, if he were to get in, he would have no idea what the company is doing. Pepper has been managing all that for over a year. Maybe more.
Tony’s been mostly focused on the empty whiskey bottles and replacing them with new ones immediately.
“Go somewhere, get away. And come back when you’re a better man.” Pepper said with such love and contempt that it scared Tony.
And so, here he is. In the middle of nowhere, in the middle of March. A rough month, mostly grey, as one waits for spring to start for real.
His cabin is hardly a cabin, a mansion is more accurate. But, the garage is the most important part. When he left, Tony had three of his cars shipped to the cabin. If he can’t drink, he has to work. His motorised beauties keep him occupied.
There aren’t any neighbours for miles, and the nearest town is a 30 minute drive. At first, Tony felt the silence suffocate him, but then birdsong and the melodies of the wind started changing him. Just a bit.
Maybe Pepper was onto something.
One day, Tony is in his garage finishing up when he hears whistling. He hasn’t been in town for a week, so the sound of a human startles him, riling up his feelings in an unfamiliar way.
The next day, Tony spots a figure on a bike, pedalling just behind some trees so he cannot get a proper look.
Two days later, a knock on Tony’s door. But, Tony is outside and he rubs his hands into an oily towel. He gets a good look at the figure now, and he guesses this is the same person he has heard and caught glimpses of.
The young man jumps nearly a foot into the air, chuckling breathily as he spins around.
“Shit, sorry. I didn’t know you were there.”
“Here I am. And here you are.”
A wide smile, so bright it nearly blinds Tony. He shines brighter than the March sun.
“I’m Peter. I live nearby. I figured I’d come say hi.”
“It’s a pleasure. I’m Tony. You wanna sit down? I could get us a drink.”
