"The magic system is never fully explained" yeah that's how life works. Imagine having a story set in modern day America and the characters have several pages of exposition on combustion engines and telecommunication networks before we get to the plot
i think this is absolutely correct and good writing advice but also victor hugo would like to have a word with you about the parisian sewer system circa 1832

SINNERS — Photographed by Frank Ockenfels
is anyone else getting increasingly disturbed by the memeification of Everything and how badly the online community at large needs to make everything into a joke or a punchline
call me too woke but i don’t think calling popstars you just don’t like ‘spiritually Israeli’ and joking about how you hope your favorite anime character isn’t in the epstein files is funny. i think it’s really moronic and devoid of empathy towards genocide victims who’ve lost their homes, loved ones and potentially their own lives, and children being subjected to the most depraved sexual abuse imaginable
Jean Valjean kinda non binary when you think about it
I AM SO FUCKING GLAD YOU ASKED!!!
Introducing Gender Valgender: the non binary Les Misérables manifesto
There’s a lot to unpack here but from early on it the book it’s established that Valjean doesn’t seem to fit neatly into the world of men or women:
“Men had only touched him to bruise him. Every contact with them had been a blow. Never, since his infancy, since the days of his mother and of his sister, had he ever encountered a friendly word and a kindly glance.” (LM 1.2.7)
Right off the bat, Hugo establishes the trauma Valjean faced at the hands of men in the all male environment of Toulon has left him wary of them. He also establishes the small kindnesses Valjean revived came from women. In M-sur-M, as mayor, he avoids the company of both respectable men and women alike. Later in the book he ends up in the all female environment of the convent. The nuns are compared specifically to prisoners of Toulon except they are there voluntarily (please don’t make me reread the convent digression to find the quote). Yet Valjean is also othered there as he is still a “man” and has to wear a bell to warn the nuns and schoolgirls away from him. His perceived masculinity is a source of fear.
Once he and Cosette leave the convent, they seem to briefly find a place together where they both fit. But Cosette is growing up, and growing into a bourgeois young woman. Then we see another dimension to Valjean’s gender issues, the idea that he cannot fit into a heterosexual nuclear family:
“As one family! No. I belong to no family. I do not belong to yours. I do not belong to any family of men. In houses where people are among themselves, I am superfluous. There are families, but there is nothing of the sort for me.” (LM 5.7.1, Hapgood)
Of course we all know how this ends, Valjean isolates himself and ends up dying without being a part of this nuclear family that he seems to both fear and revere.
Through his relationship with Cosette, Hugo explores a more feminine approach to Valjean’s character:
When she meditated in the evening, before falling asleep, as she had not a very clear idea that she was Jean Valjean’s daughter, and that he was her father, she fancied that the soul of her mother had passed into that good man and had come to dwell near her. When he was seated, she leaned her cheek against his white hair, and dropped a silent tear, saying to herself: “Perhaps this man is my mother.” (4.3.4)
Hugo is very culturally Catholic and this shines through in his veneration of mothers, first Fantine and then Valjean who seems to carry Fantine's spirit. Since Cosette has no family, Valjean is both her mother and father and in return she is his entire world, his daughter but also his mother, sister and whatever else (4.15.1). Hence the massive fall out when she gets married and he cannot follow her into her new life.
But as previously discussed, there is masculinity in Valjean's character. He possesses this enormous strength that hes almost afraid to use because of the ways it has hurt him in the past (see his hesitance to lift the cart off Fauchlevent because he’s worried Javert will recognise him as a convict). Throughout the book he uses this strength but without the associated violence (hoisting Cosette into the convent, burning himself to escape the Gorbeau robbery, shooting at the hats of the National Guard at the barricade as not to injure/kill anyone). Hopefully we're all woke enough here to know that being both gentle and strong doesn't make you less of a man but its interesting how this different characteristics with different traditional connotations combine in Valjean.
Essentially this conflict between the masculine and feminine defines a lot of Valjean’s character arc and his inability to fit into the role of Proper Bourgeois Gentleman is a huge part of his struggle towards the end of the book. Obviously Hugo did not explicitly intend for a queer reading of his work but there is cathedrals (non binary JVJs) everywhere for those with eyes to see.
Jean Valjean very non-binary and I always think about it …
“The good God must have taken you in his hand to look at you more closely, and then put you down. Only he wanted to put you in a monastery; he made a mistake.” (LM 2.8.1)
I will add: narration itself refers to Jean Valjean as Cosette’s mother as well, in passages talking about his difficult relationship to the concept of family. This is one of my favorites:
Jean Valjean had never loved anything; for twenty-five years he had been alone in the world. He had never been father, lover, husband, friend. In the prison he had been vicious, gloomy, chaste, ignorant, and shy. The heart of that ex-convict was full of virginity. His sister and his sister’s children had left him only a vague and far-off memory which had finally almost completely vanished; he had made every effort to find them, and not having been able to find them, he had forgotten them. Human nature is made thus; the other tender emotions of his youth, if he had ever had any, had fallen into an abyss.
When he saw Cosette, when he had taken possession of her, carried her off, and delivered her, he felt his heart moved within him.
All the passion and affection within him awoke, and rushed towards that child. He approached the bed, where she lay sleeping, and trembled with joy. He suffered all the pangs of a mother, and he knew not what it meant; for that great and singular movement of a heart which begins to love is a very obscure and a very sweet thing.
And then there’s also the way that— between Fantine’s death and picking up Cosette, Jean Valjean spends 9 months in prison. It’s literally symbolic Mpreg.
Jean Valjean bent down and kissed that child’s hand. Nine months before he had kissed the hand of the mother, who had also just fallen asleep.

we HAVE to kill ted sarandos (ceo of netflix)
im so serious when i say that bullshit like this should get you excommunicated from the entertainment industry and also shot on the street like a dog
Offer to let other people go ahead of you in line, especially if you're approaching the line at the same time. This is double applicable if you're in a store and the other person has fewer items than you.
This is a small gesture of kindness that in most cases will cost you very little time or effort. It shows consideration for other people's time. Especially in the case of being in a store and letting someone with fewer items than you go first, there is no sense in making someone else wait for you who would otherwise be able to get in and out much quicker.
Let people with a few items go first in line.
Slow down a little and let the person in the lane next to you merge.
Hold the door for someone if you go through first.
Offer napkins to the person at the next table who just spilled their drink.
Help someone pick up things they just dropped.
Say "Thankyou so much!" to workers who help you even though it's literally their job.
Wish everyone a nice day, because we all need a nice day.
During the first of the pandemic lockdowns in my country, I was in the supermarket, which was full of people anxiously buying supplies. In a checkout line near me, a person with a large, full trolley was in front of a person with a small, half-filled trolley. I thought to myself that I wished the full-trolley person would let the small-trolley person swap places with them, as that would be the gracious and efficient thing to do, especially in this busy and stressful time ... and to my delight, they did. I watched as, with friendly politeness, the shopper with the packed trolley looked over their shoulder, saw how much less the person behind them was buying, and invited that person to take their place and go ahead of them in the line. The small-trolley person happily accepted.
I say this to illustrate that watching someone demonstrate grace and courtesy, in the midst of a nerve-wracking situation, impacted even me, an onlooker. Five years later, I remember that moment between two strangers, and the hope it gave me that my countryfolk would get through the pandemic with our dignity and kindness intact. Your kindness and courtesy may make a bigger difference that you realise.
Last month, I was walking into a supermarket at the same time as a car was getting into the parking lot. By law, I had preference, but I was in no rush so i let the car go in first.
Inside, the driver recognized me in line and let me in front if her, thanking me for outside because she gets nervous having to stop traffic to get her car inside places since the other drivers havr no patience and start honking her. It was the fastest "what comes around goes around" I've ever experienced.
Just a few days ago I was at the shops running some errands that couldn't be outsourced, and by the time I got to the cobblers I was exhausted and shaky. This little old man - pure white hair - who was already waiting gestured for me to go first. Insisted, in fact! For this young and otherwise sprightly young lad to go first for something that couldn't have taken either of us more than five minutes. I was extremely grateful. I don't know that I had ten minutes left in me, and he had no way of knowing that except perhaps a wan smile. A small kindness, but it was invaluable that day.
@hopepunk-humanity ♡
Once I was in the grocery store doing some last minute shopping before a storm, and it was absolute packed, lines stretching back into the aisles. It took ages to reach the cashier. When the person in front of me got there, she grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge, and as the frazzled cashier was scanning, the woman said, 'I can never decide on a candy bar up here. What would you pick?'
The cashier distractedly said Snickers, always a good choice.
The Snickers and water bottle were the last things on the belt, and the moment they were scanned, the woman said to the cashier, 'those are for you. Something to help you hang in there.'
I thought the cashier was going to cry. That one moment of kindness was so appreciated.

"No miseries worth complainin' about."
WUNMI MOSAKU as ANNIE SINNERS (2025) dir. Ryan Coogler
im thinking abt sinners and The Scene: how Sammie played so beautifully that the house caught fire and showed the people inside, but he wasn't the center of it - there was so much movement in that scene!!! so much to SEE - no two people danced the same way - you're focusing on the spirits of the old and the new and how Together everyone looked even without four walls around them.
And then you have Remmick and his song. There's uniformity in the dancing!!! in the singing!!!! in the movements!!!!!!! Those same people who were dancing so freely and expressively!!!!! Now following remmick step after step!!!!!
Whiteness as vampirism!!! Leeching away individuality!!!! culture!!! freedom!!! ughhgghh this movie !!!!!¡!!! so good !!!!!¡!!!!!!!
