Song Review: Dan Tyminski - “Smile When You’re Alone”

Dan Tyminski probably could’ve called “Smile When You’re Alone” “Forever Young Pt. 2.”

While Tyminski’s melody and arrangement are not similar to Bob Dylan’s, the theme sure is as Tyminski, performing solo-acoustic style in a studio, seems to be addressing someone who’s already grown up and could use some adult advice:

I pray you’ll know how much you’re loved/and that you’ve always got a friend/that the rain rolls off your back and don’t stay long/hope your wheels don’t stop and your dreams get caught, you’re the life of every party/when the lights go out and those friends are gone/I pray you smile when you’re alone, he sings.

Co-written with Jimmy Yeary, “Smile When You’re Alone” is available only on YouTube. The songwriting and performance are so strong, a proper studio recording would likely diminish, rather than enhance, this heartfelt song of unconditional love.
