Introducing "Subject 018," the short story (or novelette, if you're being fancy about it) I've been working on for a while!
"Subject 018" is a 12,000-word dark erotic story about unethical science.
Vic is a failed science PhD student, with no family and an unhealthy dependence on alcohol, who takes the only job she can find: a vaguely-defined research support position at a suspicious facility in the desert. Once she's been hired (and signed an extensive NDA), she learns the truth: this is a facility that breeds and tests human subjects for experiments. She is assigned to Subject 018, a woman only a few years younger than herself, who has never known life outside the facility, and whose only day-to-day human contact is now Vic. Though Vic attempts to remain professional at first, over time she begins to develop a tumultuous relationship with Subject 018, who is both defiant and desperately lonely.
