So uh I might have miscalculated how long styrax lasts. It's not melting even after a second ethanol soak. I can make an entire litre of perfume now π₯π₯
@oxbowreality i'm using your tag as an excuse to share the procedure with everyone who wants to try their hand at making wicked potions:
Take some incenses (olibanum, myrrh, styrax, copal, etc, some of them are more expensive but depending on the country you can find some relatively cheap online shops. I got some styrax from a local new age/wicca store and olibanum+myrrh from a shop of religious items lol)
Grind them with a mortar and pestle until you get a fine dust, no worries if it ends up a bit chunky/grainy. Your mortar and pestle Will get a bit sticky though. Embrace the stickiness.
Soak the dust in ethanol with 1:5 proportions, like 10 g of dust in 50 ml of ethanol, and leave it in a closed container for a month, in a dark place (I used mason jars).
Shake it once a day to avoid clumps.
Filter the wicked potion with a cloth at the end of the month and put it in funky little bottles to your liking. All done!
Depending on the incense, some perfumes will still be a bit sticky after you spray them on your skin, you can just leave them soaking for an extra month, or mix them with other perfumes or essential oils. Whatever you do don't add water or the tincture will turn viscous (olibanum specifically reaches lava lamp levels of lumpiness).
This is the third profile I blocked with the same message and the same kind of numerical url. All in the same hour. Can you (fake) guys stop please

As promised, here's the other perfumes I made from my tinctures:
myrrh + olibanum in equal parts + a few drops of styrax + a few drops of mountain pine essential oil.
olibanum + styrax in equal parts
olibanum + a few drops of mountain pine essential oil
They're all pretty resinous and sweet, though the "heavy" resinousness evaporates in about an hour, turning into a more pleasant soft and airy scent during the drydown.
I mixed everything together in 1 just to experiment and it turned out pretty nicely balanced, not bad for a first try!
2 and 3 are the most church-like scents of the batch due to the strong percentage of olibanum. The styrax in 2 turns it into a powdery/sweet simil-vanilla scent halfway through the dry down, while the pine drops in 3 give it a more balsamic opening.
The only downside is that styrax doesn't want to let go of its resinousness even after a month long ethanol soak. 1 and 2 can leave stains on clothes, and 2 in particular is a bit sticky on the skin after a first spray, nothing that some water can't solve. (The jar was a bit loose and I ended up blotching the sink in a category 5 styrax event - pictures under the cut for reference. Let me tell you that was NOT something that water could solve. I scrubbed and rinsed my sink with ethanol and various cleaning products and my hands are STILL a bit sticky. They've never smelled better tho!)
