as someone who’s two years into navigating life with a three-adult household, I have a piece of advice that has really helped us keep communication respectful and the dynamic healthy: come up with a codeword that means “I respect your right as an adult to make the choices you think are best for yourself, but I have some concerns”

(we chose “monkeyslut” because we’d just finished watching Misfits…)

examples of use -

“monkeyslut, but I think you’ve overdone it this week and should rest”

“uh have you considered that you have work tomorrow? monkeyslut though”

“pizza makes you feel ill so maybe don’t eat it, but monkeyslut”

it works well because it lets the worried party give their advice and get it off their chest, without the other feeling like they’re being patronised or parented. you only get to use it if you mean it though! monkeyslut means no continuous nagging, no I-told-you-so, and above all, no getting offended if they don’t take your advice! you’ve said your piece, the ball is in their court now.

monkeyslut keeps things respectful and allows everyone to be responsible for their own choices.
