The air in the warehouse was thick, the smell of blood stinging their noses before it even appeared. Light stood feet away from everyone else; the SPK and the task force all huddled together watching his every move. Aizawa kept his eyes on Misa, who stood only a foot away.
The silence choked them all, Near's voice cutting through it like a butcher's knife.
He spoke calmly despite his shaky hands. Light saw the shaking. He smirked. In the doorway Mikami stood, peaking through with those big red eyes ready to do what he had been told by God to do. He didn't expect an invitation though, and when Near verbally welcomed him it caught him off guard. His breath stilled, then God spoke.
"Teru Mikami was it? Yes he's right you can come in. If the book is real you should have nothing to worry about..."
There was something menacing in Light's voice, a sort of certainty. Misa watched quietly with everyone else. She wasn't even supposed to be there, but Light refused to let Near send her to another hotel. At the time, everyone believed he just worried for her, wanting her close; but now nobody was certain of anything.
Mikami took a shaky step into the warehouse, eyeing his surroundings and the people crowded around him. The notebook rested in his arms protectively, it being clear he didn't intend to let it go. The countdown began.
The clock ticked, anxiety and anticipation filling the room making it hard to breathe.
Everyone turned as Light let out a shaky breath, almost a chuckle. The smirk on his face revealed it all before he even spoke.
"Well Near, looks like I won."
Time froze and nobody moved. Mikami, Light, and Misa all looked up in one swift motion, smirks plastered on their faces. Then nothing happened. Nobody dropped. Light looked around confused at first, then frantic. Why weren't they dying?
He could barely get the words out, looking around in disbelief.
Near spoke in that calm, sickening voice. Light looked at him in fear and confusion. Then, he bolted. He was inches from the door when a gunshot echoed through the empty space. He dropped. Matsuda stood, gun still aimed at Light's body, tears rolling down his cheeks.
"You led your own father to his death. What was it all for?!"
Light grunted, pain shooting through his bleeding shoulder as he gripped it.
He cried out in anger. Misa dropped to her knees, tears rolling down her cheeks. Aizawa and Mogi ran to her, trying to coax her up again.
"Misa we're so sorry, you weren't supposed to see this. You weren't supposed to know."
Aizawa spoke as calmly as he could but she didn't respond. She remembered everything. She remembered Light was Kira and she was the second Kira. She remembered the justice they carried out. And she remembered the sound of the bullet hitting Light's body.
They called out but she didn't reply. Instead, she opened her eyes. They glowed red. Everyone froze, except for Mikami who fled as soon as he saw. Nobody stopped him, they were all distracted by the new danger. She stood slowly, grasping something small in her hands.
Aizawa couldn't finish that sentence though, as he felt a sudden ache in his chest. His eyes went wide as he dropped, grasping and clawing at his chest before his breathing stopped and his eyes went still. Misa slowly opened her hands, revealing a small piece of paper from the real notebook, and names written in blood. Her blood. Everyone's names. She'd cut her hand open on the crucifix around her neck as she dropped to her knees, making it impossible to catch because of the sudden movement.
Eyes widened and panic rose. For the first time, fear showed itself in Near's eyes. One by one he watched everyone drop. Light watched too, in utter amazement. He'd had an idea that Misa would save him, but he wasn't expecting this. He wasn't even aware she'd remembered everything, just assumed she'd cry and beg for him to be given a fair trial which would buy him some time. He didn't know Ryuk had came to her when everyone watching her was asleep thinking she was as well.
Near was the last to die, she'd made sure of it. She'd thought it to be almost poetic. And when Light watched his lifeless body hit the floor he almost couldn't believe it was over. He won. Kira won. A small chuckle of disbelief left his lips as Misa stood slowly, her legs pulling her to him.
"I promised I'd do whatever it took to see your new world."
She spoke, and Light stared at her. Her devotion was suffocating, but he could practically bathe in it right now. He slid an arm around her waist, pulling her with him as he took one final look at the bodies that showed proof of Kira's power; and they walked out together.
