Given how my OCs are basically self-inserts, I'd make them based on my favorite character(s) in said universe. For ASOIAF they're Aerion and Baelor, while Arthur is my main in RDR 2.

(I'm excluding my DoL PC since the game has a character creation page so anyone can easily make their own version!)

I divide the process into three parts: Choosing a character dynamic with the Canon Character(s) for the OC's base personality → Appearance creation → Commission to an artist

Aeria was made to be Aerion's twin as I wanted someone who had somewhat of an equal standing to the character, possessing authority to defy him and is able to keep up with his cruel personality. Uncle-niece relationship in ASOIAF isn't new either, so she'd still be able to interact with Baelor as well.

Aria was created as a companion to Arthur, offering him a side of life he isn't privy of due to his involvement with the gang, sort of a peaceful change from all the usual gunslinger danger.

I myself prefer complicated relationships and angst so the OC's lore wouldn't divert far from the canon storyline.

During AKOTSK, Targaryens have started integrating themselves with other Houses in Westeros instead of maintaining intrafamilial marriages, so I'm almost sure that Maekar wouldn't let his twin children elope nor would approve of Aeria's relationship with Baelor.

Like Daeron, Aeria was made to experience dragon dreams too, but she tries to defy the fate of Baelor's passing by dabbling into magic (shoutout to Shiera). While her ending is still undecided, I want her to die in Baelor's stead as Aerion remains clueless of her efforts behind the scene.

For RDR, I too keep Arthur's canon death ending in mind. He encounters Aria around Chapter 4 during The Gilded Cage mission, since she is created as Mayor Lemieux's sheltered and sickly daughter.

With how things quickly went awry from that moment on in the game, their relationship would eventually fell off, as Aria assumes Arthur had lost interest in her when in reality he's struggling with the gang. He dies first from TB, while Aria passes not long after due to her own sickness, believing Arthur has abandoned the idea of them.

I've seen how other people would make face claims, using an actor or public figure's face as base for their OCs and make a moodboard out of them, though I try to create a written description which is helpful especially when you'd want to commission an artist later on.

Here's a screenshot from Aeria's Appearance Detail docs as example, her micro bangs is inspired from a headcanon the fandom created. Since she is Maekar's daughter, I thought the detail would be cute. The pale skin and violet eyes are more so Targaryen characteristics.

Aria is made to be albino since I want her character to be sickly frail. I love High Honor Arthur, and with how he treats women in the gang, I'd feel like he too would treat Aria carefully during their interactions given her constitution.

Moving onto outfit creation, this is where I go wild with my research! For ASOIAF, there are Fashion Masterposts here on Tumblr (bless you), but I too find inspiration from scrolling Pinterest or from fan arts created in the fandom.

As for RDR, I simply use the canon timeline of the game (1890) and find archives of fashion from the era.

Aria's outfit is inspired from this photograph I found after scouring through the internet, but I've adjusted the color and details as per my own preferences.

Her hairstyle too is developed from this site which archived different looks women in 1890s would sport in their day to day lives. The right image was my inspiration for the headpiece she uses.

There are many artists who take outfit creation commissions which I have used for Aeria's formal attire dress, but offering them base reference is always helpful to reach the result you desire. I myself compile the info dump into one GDocs as above.

Now that you've collected your references, it's time to find an artist to commission!

The price range varies, so do discuss the details with your preferred artists beforehand. It's best that your Character Sheet highlights front and back full body appearance, headshot, as well as accessories details. Expression variation would be a nice touch, but it'd no doubt cost additional fee.

Please ignore my lack of drawing skills but I gave these as initial reference to the artists I've commissioned haha

Since I didn't have the exact colors I wanted, I gave them Pantone codes instead.

Providing characters that suit your OCs vibes too would help tremendously, as the artist then could understand your vision better. And that's it basically!
