Therapist: Is there anything you struggle to deal with?
Me:
I think there should be a limit to how many Illnesses you experience at one time, it’s not fair that they’re allowed to stack endlessly
I’m not an IBS warrior. I’m an IBS queen. On her porcelain throne.

It's weird that people just like... Forget you're disabled.
You'll be like "yeah I've got chronic fatigue and chronic pain" and then you tell them how it impacts your life and then they just... Keep expecting you to do able bodied things.
Like I can't always clean up my hair from the shower without taking a break first because showering is a very physically demanding task. But if I ever say I don't have the energy to do that. They call me ridiculous. They say that's unreasonable.
It's just kind of bizarre.
It's only when you remind them that you're disabled that they back down. Because they forgot. They forgot you couldn't do everything they do.
Being in public when your bowels do whatever they please is so stressful. Like yes I took a shit in this public bathroom that I thankfully had access to please leave me alone.
And like why did you pick the closest stall to mine when there were multiple empty stalls and this bathroom is so quiet.
Related: it's really fucking stupid that "hypochondriac" is generally taken to mean "someone who wants attention and will lie to get it" not "anxiety disorder" which is what it literally is. It's always played for a laugh.
same with "psychosomatic illness"
it means "your body is so racked with stress and anxiety that you're becoming physically ill and/or your brain is going to extreme measures to signal to you that something is Terribly Wrong" not "made up illness that is not real"
Being in public when your bowels do whatever they please is so stressful. Like yes I took a shit in this public bathroom that I thankfully had access to please leave me alone.
Treating people as equal in our humanity doesn't mean we aren't bound by our biology. There is no phrase I hate more than "if I can do it anybody can!" Disabled people aren't even entering the equation for people who spout this nonsense. Biology is a very real factor in my disabilities and does mean I'm physically weaker than an average adult. It doesn't mean I'm not equally human.

Heads up: If you consistently CANNOT do tasks unless they are at the “Must Happen Right Now” stage, then you have a disability.
Most people CHOOSE to put stuff off sometimes, but abled people do not consistently feel UNABLE to complete tasks without threat of consequence.
Maybe it’s an executive dysfunction issue, maybe it’s fatigue, maybe it’s chronic pain– doesn’t matter why, what matters is acknowledging it so that you can move forward. Reach out to resources that are there to help disabled people! Ask for accommodations! They’re there FOR YOU, BECAUSE YOU NEED THEM! Understanding and accepting that you have the limitations you have, and learning what can be done about them, will lead to a much more fulfilling life which you absolutely deserve.
In the language of healthcare (not necessarily of legality), a disability is something which negatively impacts your ability to complete your ADLs (activities of daily living) which means that
A) it includes both physical and psychological experiences which negatively impact your ability to complete ADLs,
B) whether or not a specific condition meets the criteria of a disability can vary greatly from person to person and across contexts, and
C) you are considered to have a disability if YOUR SPECIFIC ADLs are negatively impacted, even if you can technically “survive” without completing those ADLs, aka what matters is that you are being prevented from completing tasks you would normally be able to do or which are essential to your mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing
If you meet the criteria for “having a disability” by any of these criteria, whether chronically, intermittently, or permanently, you are entitled to seek accommodations in your day to day life that make it easier for you to complete your ADLs.
Being compassionate with yourself rather than torturing yourself for not being able to meet idealized expectations is critical to thriving.
they should invent a type of sleeping where you wake up and feel rested
i just saw someone describe a disabled person as "someone with beautiful abilities" i cannot do this anymore
god can we stop softening the term "disabled". disabled isn't a dirty word. it's not "special abilities" or "differently abled" or whatever the fuck you want to call it. people have disabilities that cause life to be hard and there's nothing wrong with acknowledging that?? it feels so invalidating when people are like "ohh you're not disabled!!! you have special abilities!!" like. omg a) it feels so infantilizing. b) by saying that you're basically saying our struggles aren't real...? some conditions are disabling. it's not hard to understand?? like there is NOTHING wrong with being disabled & using the word disabled. it's not offensive it's not a dirty word can we take the shame out of it pls oh my god. this goes for physical & non physical disabilities btw
Dr: Do you have any pain?
Me: Oh, no, I'm fine, you know, it only hurts when I move.
Dr: What part?
Me: All of it.
Every day, millions of girls suffer from the terrible affliction known as "tummy hurts"

Things abled people don't understand:
Your test results coming back negative isn't necessarily a good thing. Sometimes it just means that you're back to step one in trying to figure out what's wrong with you.
Conversely, a diagnosis can be a huge relief.
Wheelchairs mean freedom.
Things that most people would consider non-activities, such as taking a shower, putting on clothes or commuting, can take a huge amount of energy if you have a chronic illness.
This includes things you do for fun, such as socialising, playing games, reading, and even watching TV.
Exercise is going to make my condition worse, not better.
and i just waste it; this life of mine. hand over hand. the days slip in between each other and nestle in ugly spurs. what did you do today? how many hours have i spent, neither truly here nor truly there. just frozen. wanting desperately to begin anything. get up and shower or work out or drink water or make a change or dance along or be a person - just get up. my insides, coating the edges of blank atrophy. how hard can it truly be? people do this every day. they make their life every day. why can't i? why am i stuck here? why am i stuck like this, with only my heart and no boat? the shifting warning - you need to start swimming, you can't always just float. but what else, when my limbs don't move and there's no sound for the breach of my throat? what else, and where am i going? what shore am i supposed to even be wading out for? nothing and nothing and nothing. the swinging, empty bridge, and no railing.
