As much as Richard is a bad person I think the fandom gravely underestimates his trama. Like no one EVER talks about how his dad literally beat him? Compared to the other characters who get paragraphs of an analysis based on their childhood, trauma, and their mental health issues, Richard is barely acknowledged. ALSO evey single time, instead of talking about how something is clearly wrong with Richard and he even has lots of sychopathic tendencys and how his trama has affected him, chalk his actions down to him just being annoying and a bad person. I'll probably make a longer post about this.
The way the fandom treats Richard is rooted in classism, elitism, and (due to popular headcanon ā> altered fandom perception) racism. ā Note: in the book heās white, which has everything to do with him getting into the Greek class & getting away with what they did.
Iāve wanted to address this for such a long time, because heās such a complex character who is so often mischaracterized in order to make the Greek class look more desirable.
I genuinely canāt stress enough that Richardās home life has EVERYTHING to do with the way he turned out. Itās the entire reason he joined the Greek class.
John Richard Papen ran away from Plano, California because he and his mother had been beaten by his father his entire life and his mother let it happen.
This left him vulnerable to the cultās influence, and yes the Greek class was absolutely a cult. He was desperate for family and to feel like he belonged. He changes himself as a means of control.
Thatās why he hates being acknowledged as a Californian so much. He can change his clothes and lie about his money status, but he canāt change the fact that where he was raised and who he was raised by influenced who he is at his core.
He associates home with abuse, and thatās why he was okay staying with the Greek class because thatās all heād ever known. Heād rather put himself in dangerous situations (because danger is familiar) than live a happy, healthy life (because that would mean accepting what happened to him wasnāt okay).
What's your opinion on Richard?
I respect him as a scholar. He's a good man, Richard.
Man I miss free the nipple. Its getting warmer and we donāt even have free the nipple anymore

Feminist criticism of men's behavior comes from the idea that gender is a social construct, that men are not inherently evil and their behavior can change. If men couldn't change, the criticism would be pointless.
It is not necessary for every feminist statement to include a 'not all men do this' disclaimer. The criticism itself already expresses the possibility that men could choose not to behave in this way.
Unless someone states that men's behavior can't change or that there is inherent evil in being a man, accusing a feminist of 'manhating' because she criticizes men is usually nothing but an attempt to distract from the content of the criticism itself.
We should recognize such an obvious attempt at derailment for what it is and move on.
There's a recurring online tendency to aestheticize consensus itself. The imagined future village is full of emotionally compatible people who enjoy communal gardening, conflict resolution circles, acoustic folk music, mutual aid potlucks, and repairing bicycles together at sunset. Which is nice for the people who genuinely enjoy that lifestyle. But plenty of humans are solitary, prickly, obsessive, urban, nocturnal, sensory-seeking, technologically attached, contrarian, novelty-seeking, private, or just plain difficult. Those people do not evaporate after the revolution. They do not get Left Behind while you are Raptured into the Utopia. They become your neighbors.

Interesting how some read Macaulay^2 as consensual/mutually pursued and other think it was coerced on Charlesā side. I donāt think Iāve ever seen anybody say they think it was perpetuated by Camilla, prob because weāre inclined to see her as a victim one because of Charlesā violent/ jealous temperament, and two because sheās a woman, but those are correlation, not causation. There are also other more niche claims like that Julian groomed them into it, or that nothing ever actually occurred between them and Bunny and Francis lied. Iād like to see more arguments for and against all sides but itās such a taboo topic.
OH MY GOD YES okay let me get on my soap box a little. my wife knows far more abt this than i do and hopefully i can get her to give a psychological breakdown of the twins but incestuous relationships are often formed in youth, and are usually formed due to neglect of some kind by the parents/guardians, and isolation !! so those developmental milestones (like sexual exploration) are often shared with each other instead of with others.
incestuous relationships are also codependent !!! they are BOTH reliant on each other, and this is where is where francisā description comes in: both are jealous of each other !! i suspect that the nasty mix of charlesā (imo) untreated bpd (he def shows symptoms of it to ME) and alcoholism are what make him more physically confrontational than camilla (though, again, we donāt actually see charles with anyone but francis so we donāt actually /know/ if camilla was less jealous prior to the start of the abuse in the latter half of the book).
i feel (respectfully) that there is sometimes the assumption that simply because it became abusive later and simply because the power dynamic of him being a man and her being a woman exists that it MUST mean it was always abusive, that is very likely not the case! and their dynamic does not hint at that abuse prior to the latter half of the book !! and unfortunately, we CANNOT look at the bacchanal because both of them consented to that prior, and both of them were high out of their minds !!! and IF charles does have bpd, the drugs would have hit him far harder than anyone else on a good day, but especially on an empty stomach (hence, ācharles was the worst by farā) making him act out as he did !
the dreamers (2003) dir. by bertolucci actually is one of the only films iāve seen that gives a good insight into the psychological dynamic of incestuous twins. it is also a deeply uncomfortable film at times but but it !! helped me understand a lot !!
and let me finish this by saying this is NOT to imply that charlesā behavior was justified by any means, or that camilla was secretly a villain or wtv. but watering down their dynamic to camilla just being a hapless victim is not only a severe flattening of a very rich and complex character to being this āpureā innocent doe-eyed character (which i think is very misogynistic and also deeply uninteresting) but is also just borne of a lack of understanding of these dynamics and a lack of desire to explore topics which make us uncomfortable!!
but thatās the point ! itās supposed to be uncomfortable !
edit: and we do see camilla stand up for herself she is not incapable !!! she yells at judy for upsetting her, she seems to despise marion and when she talks about her she is far more snippy and rude than richard lets on in the beginning. and when the abuse happens she immediately leaves !! iād argue she probably stayed because of some sense of obligation for charles (speaking as the parentified oldest of many siblings), especially having probably seen him struggle with his alcoholism, his mental health, and what is implied to be a history of sexual abuse. and the fact they were codependent made it hard for her to leave until it was a jeopardy on her safety
this take and explanation is amazingly well thought out!!! and i WILL explore/write about the twins relationship more soon!!!!! im a psychology major with a focus is paraphilias and abnormal behavior/dynamics, so i have had plenty of rants about what the twins relationship likely was and how it formed.
sibling incest, particularly those close in age, statistically begins due to codependency or displays of unhealthy dynamics/boundaries by guardians. Since the twins are orphaned its unlikely that the ladder is the case. My theory due to my psychoanalysis practice and knowledge is due to the loss of their parents the twins held the belief that they only had one another, maybe even that they were extensions of one another. This could lead to them explore and sharing milestones in their psychosexual developmental stages, them being codependent blurs the boundaries a majority of the population is taught. its as if camilla and Charles donāt have any, or at the very least, minimal. Thats is until Camilla begins to seek it in college, which causes distress in Charles as that is not the dynamic he has grown accustom to. And as someone, who believe him to have BPD could very well cause a spiral. it could be safe to say his own sister is his favorite person, and his feeling like heās losing her due to a dynamic shift causing him to start to grow aggressive (not that this excuses his actions and abuse towards camilla; i absolutely doesnāt!!)
I am also of the opinion on their sexual dynamic was consenual on both sides and actually wasnāt a common occurrence (as francis states āi donāt think its something that happens very oftenā), i think the twins would engage with one another in highly emotional situations or when they felt lack of control. their relationship not being driven by physical attraction but instead as a coping mechanism formed in their sexual developmental years.
Okay, i actually didnāt mean to rant THIS much and honestly I could go on and on and on (like how i think Camilla knows her brother so well and knows his symptoms of BPD, despite this not being a diagnose heād likely obtain in the 80s, and take on a caregiver role as a result) but i wont for today at least.
Thank you so much for reading and if any of you would like to know more about the psychology aspect of any of this: please feel free to shoot me a message!! :)
