While we’re talking about mischaracterizations, Grace is not just an awkward anxious fumbling mess. He is sometimes. He is a mess but not just a social anxious one, you know? I don’t even think he has social anxiety, just regret after doing a social blunder. He’s actually quite far from the nerdy socially awkward scientist trope that I feel some people put him in. He’s quite charming actually. That’s why so many people liked him. He likes to talk but he doesn’t ramble about random things it all has a reason he just talks about it for a little bit too long. He has no problems going up to people and talking to them and actually seems to love it, to including them. He’s confident about his ability to teach and was fine talking to the astronauts and explaining things to them until Yao interrupted and he could tell it was directed towards him- that would trip up anybody. He had his moments where he’s nervous about talking, like in the conference room with the scientists scene, but he quickly adjusts and wins over the skeptical scientist team. I think those scenes are more to show that he’s in a tricky situation that makes him nervous not that he’s a typically social anxious guy. After the flashback he writes “jokes???” On the white board bc that’s his main take away about his character in interacting with people.
