We like to joke about being useless lesbians/sapphics, when a girl is flirting and we have no clue, but I think there’s an actual reason for it: as women, we operate under an assumption that any and all interaction with other women is platonic. The fact that female friends are socially allowed to be more affectionate than male ones doesn’t help at all. It’s the same heteronormativity that leads straight people to call us “gal pals”.

So please, if you’re interested in another girl, make it really clear that you aren’t just being friendly! Don’t just drop hints or play mind games, because chances are she won’t get it.

Shutdowns: things are too much and I reach a point where my body and brain just (suddenly, mostly) go quiet, kind of drained

Meltdowns: pent up frustration, sensory overload, general feeling of “TOO MUCH” that you just can’t take and you feel like you’re exploding

My family often calls my shutdowns “locking up” or “freezing,” because that’s what I do. I freeze like a deer in the headlights, and I withdraw and become unresponsive. I had a lot of them as a kid and often had to be physically removed from the overwhelming situation and given some time and space to recover before I could talk again. I never had many meltdowns, though I do remember, on occasion, winding up very distressed and crying until, again, I had some time to recover.
