i'm rereading the murderbot diaries and murderbot's utter conviction that it and gurathin are bitter enemies is still so funny. buddy. gurathin got over this months ago. he's just a quiet guy.

If Ratatouille mechanics were real, there would be a whole market of businesses offering the services of operating rats to people who want them, and it'd be like how bees produce honey. People in the rat business would be so exhausted of having to explain over and over again that no, the rats aren't being exploited. If the rats didn't like how they're being treated, they would simply not return. There's no goddamn way to force a rat to be so passionate about playing the saxophone that they'll figure out how to puppeteer a human to do it for them. All that the business does is finding a way to put that specific rat in the hair of someone who's about to go on stage.

The rats 100% think the businesses are being run for their benefit and worry about the humans being exploited.

A rat manager who is a rat and deals on their end of the deal is exhausted of having to explain over and over again that look, an average fully grown adult human being is like 200 times your weight, their hands are very fast and they can throw things better than you want to imagine. If one of them things didn't want you in their hair, you're not going to stay there for long. You'd be yote out the window in two seconds flat.

So do people realize that we aren't building new train tracks when we expand the amteak network, I have multiple times seen people say that we shouldn't expand the network because it would destroy protected lands, which would be a fair criticism but Amtrak doesn't build new tracks, we use existing tracks. We are not destroying protected lands, we are using land that has already been clear for a century

Also the alternative is more highways which destroy significantly more land for less capacity than railways. So the question is do you want to keep complaining about something that isn't happening and let the environment get damaged as a result or do you want to actually learn how things work

So, wait... Were the tracks not in use at all? Or was it like *only* commercial transport on those tracks? Either way, its good that amtrak will be able to use them again, but one would be much more frustrating

I've really wrestled with whether to post about this. There's so much I want to say and yet I haven't wanted to signal boost this whole clusterfuck. I'm lucky in that I've never been raped. My [relationship-redacted] and multiple friends have been. I have experienced sexual assault, the details of which I won't share. I'm the one who pinged in the mods. And I don't think I trigger off the word "rape." In fact, I would say I don't have common triggers at all, in the sense of having a panic attack, ptsd response, etc. But I know it took multiple tries to type '@ moderator' because my hands were shaking so badly. I couldn't add in a message why I was pinging them, I just had to hit enter once I got that single word spelled correctly and trust them to back read. The trigger which people want accommodation for is the word "Gurathin." The name of a character in the canonical works they are fans of. That doesn't seem like a reasonable request in a server designed for free-flowing conversation. Moreover, the same people who want that accommodation don't hesitate to use the word "Gurathin" themselves. Watching someone attempt to @ ~1600 people into a discussion of rape with no warning, while simultaneously claiming that use of the word "Gurathin" is triggery and that trigger was insufficiently accommodated, was really something. No, actually, I take it back. Extreme opinions exist on the internet, news at 11! What was really something was watching this behavior repeatedly get called 'thoughtful' by other members. Despite everything, I will still say that Murderbot fandom is fantastic. Or rather, that through Murderbot fandom I've had the privilege of meeting fantastic people and reading a lot of fantastic fiction. To those who support this behavior: I actually have read fiction where a character has committed rape. Clive Barker's Imajica is an extraordinary work of fiction which I recommend. Depiction in fiction isn't an endorsement and is often the exact opposite. Telling lies to win an argument is a poor tactic. Moreover, this specific lie feeds into a growing culture of censorship. These lies told within fandom parallel the lies told outside of fandom as justification to censor books in schools and libraries.
