Imagine trying to make the argument "I don’t think independent artists should be held responsible for market trends they have no control over nor should they be obligated to sacrifice their source of income for the sake of maintaining moral superiority" in defense of selling merchandise with AI generated images within these same communities. you would get laughed out of the room and then blacklisted by all of your peers. Because not capitulating to market trends and taking a moral stance about what kind of art you feel comfortable producing and selling is totally an option here, and something that happens all the time. It just seems it's much easier to have a sense of ethics when it comes to things that infringe on their interests, rather than their customers'.

Also you are simply wrong that these people are not part of the same market,independent artists do not exist in a bubble they are not in fact isolated and insular. This is just blatantly false and ignoring that independent artists in artist alleys are actively still competing with other vendors at conventions. (Which become more and more mainstream every year) which will continue to stock blind boxes even if you somehow manage to shame all independent artists out of doing so.

The “external pressure” is what sells and what doesn’t. The same “pressure” that dictates what other sort of products these artists sell and exactly what content they depict in what they sell. (There’s been a BIG influx of star and heart shaped badges the past few years because those SELL)

And no I won’t imagine doing that because ai and what product an independent artist chooses to sell are simply not comparable and I’m not going to entertain such a bad faith comparison.

The deciding factor isn’t “blind boxes or gacha” the deciding factor is what actively sells and attracts customers like it or not customers are more attracted to blind boxes and gacha and many will choose that over the artist who doesn’t offer it.

In case you haven't yet heard what's been evolving here on the east coast...

The NL government told Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation that they were not allowed to publicly state that Innu history in Labrador goes back further than 300 years, in the prepared cultural exhibit for Indigenous Peoples Day. Jodie Ashini, the cultural guardian behind the exhibit, refused to bow down to this colonial rewrite of history.

Subsequently, after a series of protests, NL Premier Tony Wakeham and Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation Minister Lela Evans released a half-assed apology, instead of meeting the very simple demand from the Innu leaders: A written commitment to stop prompting a false colonial narrative. The Innu Nation rejected these "apologies", and officially closed the exhibit.

Miawpukek Mi'kmaq have already released an official statement of support. It is my personal hope that more First Nations on the Atlantic do the same. (The news is only just starting to spread here in NS.)
