“Come on Scully. You saw them in the sky too. How could you not describe them as anything other than flying snakes with legs carrying little bags.” he too leaned forward to address Scully across you.

You stared forward at Skinner who was across his desk from you. Sighing you tried to make yourself smaller as the two bickered either side of you.

Skinner cleared his throat. “And how does this link to…” the man stopped to peer over the paperwork in hand as you all turned your attention back to him “The man with too much hair, and a suspicious aura about him?”

Mulder put his hands face up in front of him in a defensive maneuver. “He was sketchy. Genuinely suspicious and kept avoiding our questions at all costs. At the time of writing that part of the report he was a suspect. Come on Y/N back me up here you met him too.”

“I did.” you looked directly at Skinner “He was suspicious but upon further investigation it was a red herring.”

You could feel Mulder looking at you as you spoke and Scully caught the little smirk on his lips and glitter in his eye as he did so.

“That doesn’t negate the fact you put an innocent man under arrest for what? Having too much hair? Being suspicious. If we arrested every suspicious person we’d have most of America covered in prisons.” Skinner's words were harsh.

Mulder leaned back in his chair in defeat as Skinner continued. “Talk me through the rest of the report.” Fox went to speak but Skinner cut him off “Y/N or Scully that is.”

You took the plunge and spoke through the next part of the case. “After realising he wasn’t the suspect I reviewed the images and footage to see that these… entities or objects actually seemed to have a small bulb on them that was emitting a low blue, almost ultra violet light.”

Skinner seemed intrigued. Scully watched as Mulder couldn’t take his eyes off of you as you spoke.

“After communicating this with Mulder and Scully. Mulder and I went to camp out and observe the phenomenon ourselves. We spent hours waiting to see if anything would show up and we saw a swarm. Not a handful as the others described. It was over very quickly.”

“And how long did you observe for? The report doesn’t detail-”

“About eight hours.” Mulder interrupted. Skinner raised his eyebrow and you felt warmth run to your cheeks. You weren’t sure why you were having this reaction but you couldn’t deny you could remember each and every one of those minutes in those eight hours yourself.

Scully rolled her eyes as she saw you glance at Mulder with a soft smile before deciding to continue herself. “I stayed and got hold of systems to scan for any unknown frequencies and we found that there were multiple that were spiking just off of the mountain. Upon taking Mulder and Y/N there the next morning we found a huge cavern filled with these remote controlled objects which were reminiscent of the flying snakes, captured in images and recounted by eyewitnesses.”

“And then what did you do Agent Scully?” 

She hesitated for a second. “We went to photograph the scene but no one had a camera. We had no way to document it.” 

“And I assume the rest of the report is correct. Should I read it to you?” Skinner peered over the edge of his glasses at the three of you.

“Please don’t” you spoke up. “Spare us the misery.” 

“I seriously don’t know how the three of you are still agents. Now get out of my sight while I sort this out.”

The three of you stood and began to make your way out of the room. Scully led while Mulder followed you. “Oh, and don’t forget to send an apology to the man with too much hair.”

Mulder smiled sarcastically at the man and closed the door behind him.

He sighed and walked aside you as Scully led the way. “I’ve had worse grillings for Skinner.”

“Of course you have.” Scully quipped “Remember the time you accused a woman of controlling the population of ants in-”

“I’d rather not.” he interrupted.

You looked at the man and gave him a silly smile “You haven’t told me about that one.”

His eyes shone as he looked at you. “I’ll tell you some time.”

Scully turned and began to walk backwards. “Don’t the two of you have another eight hour camp out scheduled? You both seemed to have such a great time last time.” her face beamed with a smile. Trying to give you both a nudge.

You could feel embarrassment rush to your face again.

“I’d rather not be stuck in a cramped car next time.” he cleared his throat. He looked at you shyly before continuing. Scully  turned back around and hurried up, creating some more distance. 

He slowed down “How about we do dinner out tonight? Or we can do something more casual?”

You slowed as well and faced the man. “Will you tell me about the ants?”

“I’ll tell you about the ants.” he confirmed with a smirk.

“I’m in. Let’s not do anything too fancy or formal” you continued to walk “If you get it planned and the apology sent to Mr ‘Too much hair’ before the end of the day I’ll be there.”

He felt like a weight had been lifted and he caught up with you quickly. “Do we think a fruit basket will suffice?”
