The lights were just bright enough for you to see your book. Matt always insisted you'll wreck your eyes - and then we'll both be blind - but you said overhead lights made your skin crawl. To compromise, he had invested in two extra side lamps with regulated brightness and warm toned bulbs.
Now, you were reading, leaning partly on Matt, his arm around your shoulders and hand brushing over your arm. The softest blanket in the apartment - your and Matt's favorite - tangled over both of you.
Matt shifted, stretching one leg out onto the coffee table, making both of your bodies slide lower on the sofa. His hand stroked up and down your upper arm a few times, then trailed up to the curve of your shoulder.
The TV buzzed softly, dialogue and audio description just barely reaching your ears.
A fingertip swirled over your shoulder in meandering patterns, raising goosebumps in its wake.
That was the thing about Matt. His whole world was always loud. Every sound, every smell, every sensation amplified so much that sometimes it got painful. Over time, he found that feeling your skin under his palms - warm, smooth, soft - helped him relax. It gave him something nice to focus on, he said. And you certainly weren't going to take that away from him.
Even if sometimes it tickled like hell.
Okay, most of the time.
Alright, fine, every time.
The fingers trailed upwards over your collarbone.
It was a miracle that he hadn't realised it yet. Though that was mostly because he was either too exhausted after Being Daredevil, or you were set on providing other distractions so he wouldn't be too focused on your bodily instincts to twitch and squirm.
"Your book okay?" Matt asked softly, pulling you out of your thoughts. "You haven't turned a page in a while."
You tilted your head up to raise an eyebrow at him. "Are you timing my reading now?"
"No." He said around a smile. Fingers slipped under the hem of your tshirt to widen their trail. "Just noticing."
You clicked your tongue, turning back to your book.
Matt kept stroking around your collarbone. Back and forth. Back and forth.
Unhurried.
Feather-light.
You breathed deeply and resolved to continue reading. It would be a good distraction from it.
You barely got through two paragraphs before your attention was brought back to Matt's hand. He altered his course, one finger stroking up to the curve where your neck met your shoulder, then two fingers stroking back down into the dip of your collarbone.
And again.
And again.
You couldn't surpress it - you shivered.
The stroking stopped.
You kept your eyes planted firmly on the page in your lap.
"You okay?" Matt didn't sound worried, but there was an edge to his voice that told you he could quickly get there.
"Uh-huh."
"Am I tickling you?"
"Uh- well-"
"Ah." Now he sounded smug. "Here? Really?" He emphasised his questions with a quick sribble over your collarbone.
"Okay- hey-!" You snatched his hand. "There's no need for any of that."
"Oh, I think there's need." Matt was on the move. He pushed off from the sofa to lean partly over you. "Does it tickle when I do this?"
He placed soft, quick little kisses over your shoulder and collarbone.
"Wait!" You yelped, hands abandoning your book to latch onto Matt's hair. "Shit - hold on!"
You felt him grin against your skin. "That bad?"
"You haven't shaved." You complained.
"Oh yeah?"
You realised your mistake at the same time Matt did. Before you could stop him, he rubbed his stubble over your skin, nuzzling softly.
"Shihit!" You broke into giggles, your legs curling up. "You're gohona give me beard burn!"
Matt laughed, breath sending shivers down your spine, and placed one last kiss into the dip at the base of your throat.
"Well, at least you're only ticklish there, right?" He said once he pulled back enough to be in your line of sight. Then he wedged his hand underneath your arm to tweak at your upper ribs.
"Imagine if you were ticklish in other places." Matt spoke over your loud laughter. You squeezed your eyes shut and pulled your knee even further up, trying to wedge it between you and Matt.
"I mean, it would be really inconvenient. But thankfully it's just that one spot. No other ones." He continued, not letting up from your ribs. Changing tactics, you slid your torso sideways, down the sofa. "Hey, where are you going?"
Matt followed you down to the sofa cushions, laying partly on top of you.
"I'm gohona kill you!" You shrieked, yelping again when Matt lowered his hand to squeeze up and down your sides.
"How may times did I unknowingly tickle you?" Matt asked, ignoring your threat.
"I'm not answering thahat!"
"What, a third of the time? Half?" He pestered, now reaching back up to scribble over your neck again. "Don't tell me it was every time."
Your refusal to answer told him everything. He burst into bright laughter, head dropping forward until his forehead pressed into your stomach. His hand rested warm and solid against the side of your neck, thumb pressing into the hinge of your jaw.
"And you just let me tickle you all that time?" Matt asked over his chuckling.
"Shut the hell your mouth, Murdock." You snapped - or tired to. You were too preoccupied with catching your breath.
"Alright, alright." Matt soothed, but lifted up to bury his face in your neck and shoulder again.
"Nooo." You whinged, already giggling again as Matt nuzzled your skin more. You tried kicking him in the side, but your leg got caught under the blanket. He slid his palms under your tshirt, stroking your skin lightly with his fingertips. Whether it was intentional or not, the ticklishness increased.
"I can't believe you managed to hide this." Matt spoke into your neck, voice vibrating against you. You scrunched your shoulder up, snickering harder. "You're so ticklish."
"Leave me alohone!" In a desperate move, you jammed your fingers into Matt's sides.
He twitched, barking out a laugh against your neck.
"Behave." He lifted his head so you culd see his grin. "I'm being nice right now."
"You have an interesting definition of 'nice'." You said, breathless.
"Mm, no. What's really interesting -" Matt hummed lightly. "- is that you haven't asked me to stop a single time."
Your face burned. "That's inconsequential."
"Sure."
You knew he didn't believe you. He looked entirely too smug.
"Would it kill you to admit it?"
You gritted your teeth and pretended that your heart didn't race at the thought. "Maybe."
"Awh." Matt pursed his lips. Ran his hand over your cheek lightly. "Alright. Maybe next time."
Then he was gone.
"Wh-" You raised yourself up onto your elbows. "What do you mean 'next time'?"
Matt was reaching down to the floor to pick up your book. You hadn't even realised it fell during the scuffle. He fixed a page that had bent on impact with the floor, smoothing it out neatly.
"If you thought this was a one-off scenario," he said, placing your book onto your lap. "Then you really don't know me very well."
Adrenaline thudded through your body, leaving you tingling.
"Excited?" Matt grinned.
You huffed, snatching your book and leaning back against the sofa, dead set on reading and ignoring his…insinuations.
Over the top of your book, you saw Matt settle back against the sofa, attention back on the TV. The self-astisfied grin remained in place.

A/n: This is a bit darker than what I normally post so if this one isn’t for you I totally understand. If you do decide to read though I hope this can be a bit of light in your chest that you take with you.
Space was a vast, unforgivable, beautiful thing. At times, you marveled at its beauty and other times you fought down the urge to scream. When you had the energy, you felt angry at the every passing star and galaxy for reminding you of the slow passage of time, suspended in the darkness with your small food supply dwindling away.
Despite the vastness, you were never lonely. The three of you were, by all accounts, alone, but you felt closer to Ryland and Rocky than you ever had with anyone back on Earth. Still, small things began to disappear just as your supplies did. The jokes started to get fewer and farther in between, and the play fighting disappeared underneath your noses. The experiments that had been used to keep you busy on your long journey had come to a halt. The separation between the three sections on the Hail Mary started to become inconsequential, your bodies losing the energy to move between spaces. Ryland and you started to shrink, not quite withering away, but not all the way there either. Your skin started to turn a sickly shade and the muscles on Ryland’s arms faded over time, leaving weakness where strong bones had once been.
Rocky became your caretaker and, at times, you wondered if you’d have flashbacks of this moment when you were older and it really was the end. On your darker days, you wondered if you’d ever get to see that end.
Rocky fed the both of you the comma slurry and then eventually the Taumoeba every morning and evening. The three of you were always together, usually cozied up on one of the beds, curled around each other to preserve body heat. It was horribly sad if you thought about it for too long, you’re two mischievous quippy boys turning silent for sometimes hours at a time, if not nearly whole days. You didn’t think about it that much though. With your limited food, your body had started to work itself into its own type of coma. You and Ryland did little more than sleep, and when you were awake your brain felt bogged down by mush, like someone had tied rocks onto all of your thoughts and threw them in the ocean.
When your brain was lighter though, you missed the person you’d used to be. You missed the way a smile felt on your face, and the way you used to steal Ryland’s equipment to get a reaction out of him, you missed your intelligent mind and your quick reflexes and the way you used to pepper Rocky with questions about the cultures and psychology of the Eridian people.
You lasted so long in the darkness, but there was a time near the end of your travels where you started to lose yourself entirely. You were only a few months from Erid, practically in the same solar system when it started to all feel pointless, where the gun that Yáo had left had started to seem enticing. At first you didn’t tell anyone about it, until one day Rocky started to have to spoon feed you your Taumoeba portion for the day and with trembling hands you told him that you didn’t know if you could make it. He listened to you as you cried, then sobbed, and then grew too tired to talk at all. He helped you change your clothes and brush your teeth, and gently scratched your scalp as he washed your hair for you.
“Promise Rocky you try to make it,” he insisted as he brushed out your hair for you.
Your eyes were stuck on the stark white of the metal hull. It all seemed so dull, so lifeless to you. “I don’t know if I can, Rock.”
Rocky gently untangled a knot that you’d left in your hair for days, but his voice was strong. “Promise Rocky you try. Rocky cannot watch another friend die.”
At this, you seemed to sober. You finally remembered Ryland in the room beside you two, fast asleep, and no idea that this conversation was happening. You were grateful for that small mercy at least, you didn’t think you could bear to tell him any of this. He would break against the news, like a boat against the tide. A thought occurred to you then, appearing between hazy visions of the end, that by leaving this world, you might make Ryland and Rocky’s worlds unlivable too.
Rocky placed one of his arms on top of your heart. “Rocky will save. You try? Question?”
You looked over at Rocky, the one who was single handedly keeping you and your human companion alive and found that you couldn’t say no. You didn’t know for certain that you would make it but for the time being you couldn’t stomach the thought of giving Rocky one more dead body to live with. You nodded and weakly replied in a horse voice that you would try.
Promptly after, all items that could cause any harm to you were put out of sight. You weren’t sure if you just couldn’t find them or if Rocky had tossed them out the airlock, but either way, you knew the move was intentional. While Rocky couldn’t do much to improve most of your condition, he began to do additional things for you. He played with your hair so you could sleep peacefully. He placed Ryland on top of your body so that you could have some form of stimulation without either of you having to waste your energy. He gave you little puzzles, things that were really meant for children, but were a struggle to your malnourished mind. He said it was to keep your brain busy, but you guessed it was to fend off the darkness that was growing inside of you.
You made good on your promise, and you tried despite how hard it was.
With a month left, you decided you were going to make it, using one last final push of your mental strength to make it to Erid. However, even after the Hail Mary was back on soil again, conditions didn’t improve all that much at first. The Eridians had to keep you inside the ship for quite some time, making sure that the environment that they were going to put you in was just right.
Ryland and you were still weak, your bodies just barely alive from the nutrition the Taumoeba provided you, but you helped with the experiments where you could, providing the scientists with your Earthly knowledge when you were alert enough to do so. With you and Ryland out of commission most of the time though, Rocky was the one who really managed the most. He visited with you and Ryland whenever he wasn’t eating or working. Despite the fact that he had a home, a mate at that, he only slept with the two of you watching over him.
Adrian came to see the three of you as often as they could. They were quiet, much less talkative than Rocky, and at first you had mistaken it for malcontent, but when they kept showing up you began to see it for what it was- caution.
You couldn’t blame them, not with Rocky being gone for so many years and your presence keeping him mentally elsewhere now, but Adrian kept visiting you all the same. They never usually said much but their presence became a steady companion on the ship.
As time moved forward you began to become more at ease with their quiet, and they in turn, started to share more of their inner world with you.
The first day that you were out of the Hail Mary, you collapsed with relief onto the sand and rolled around until you were sure you would be dumping sand out of your pockets for days. You ran across the grassy area and screamed and then promptly had to lie back down, too out of breath to continue on.
They implemented an ocean a week later and you and Ryland tested out the water. You held hands as you gradually stepped out into the ocean, and waited for the water to meet you on the shoreline. For a moment, it felt like it was just the two of you back on earth, aboard Stratt’s vat once more. Of course, you weren’t alone. A dozen scientists stood behind you, carefully watching you to make sure you didn’t have any sort of adverse effects to the water.
Afterall, they had gone through a great deal trying to keep their two humans alive, so everything in the biodome was carefully monitored. At times, it was easy to feel like you were on an episode of the Truman show, but all of that was forgotten for a moment as you curled your toes into the wet sand.
When the ocean came in and placed a soft kiss across the top of your shin, it felt more real than anything had in a long while. You closed your eyes and listened to the peaceful wooshing sound of another wave coming back in. The scientists were still hard at work trying to figure out the optimal amount of sunlight for your dopamine production and circadian rhythms, but at that moment you felt okay. For the first time in a long time, you felt like you knew what you were fighting for, and it seemed like it was all worth it.
As you and Ryland began to settle into your new home, the scientists were hard at work trying to improve your quality of life. The thrum had met and the best minds were all tasked with attempting to get the two of you to not only survive but to thrive on their planet. You were each given a team that you interacted with on a daily basis. You were given nutrition pills and daily routines, and though you resisted them at first, saying that there was no point, all Ryland had to do was to send you a pleading look and you caved.
Despite the fact that you still hadn’t told him about the scary moment on the ship all of those months ago, he always seemed to know, so you begrudgingly took your pills and went on your walks.
The Erids figured out the sun cycle, and found a way to plant you a garden. They brought you to it one day, and for the first time in years, you found yourself in front of a tree. It was small, shorter than you and for a moment you wondered if it was real, or if it was like the blue sky above you, only showing you what you wanted to see.
You reached out and touched a leaf, and found the smooth crisp edge of a living plant. You felt each of the lines across the short green leaves and traced them with your fingertips. You barely managed to choke out a thank you before you fell into tears.
After that moment, you took your medication, and went on your daily walks without comment. Rocky and Adrian were given suits like the ones that Rocky had used on the Hail Mary, and they visited you often, even setting up a house of their own on the beach. Though you were quiet for most days, you enjoyed their soothing company.
Erid’s scientists had made new developments on your food, and Ryland had started to cook again. You noticed him humming to himself one evening, munching on some chips as he grilled burgers. After you had finished eating, you felt full, and your chest felt warmer.
Time began to pass quicker, much faster than it had on the ship. You were given brighter clothes and you started to wear them occasionally. Rocky and Adrian established movie nights, and Ryland dragged you to each of them.
One night, on one of your evening walks on the beach, the setting sun had aligned itself with the tiny buoys that the Erid’s had set up for ‘swim safety’. You looked at it for a moment, almost mistaking it for a ship because it was so far out. At that thought, you let out a loud laugh. It was a short note, just a little one, but the sound flowed through the beach, like a bird call. Your brows furrowed and you stared at the sun, realizing that your laughter was still inside of you.
If you could still do that, then surely your joy was still there as well.
The next week, Ryland didn’t have to drag you to movie night.
He had started to meet with Rocky and the science team, and you had started to go with them. He was quickly pointed towards the school system, but you were given a special suit to enter the Eridian labs.
Your work began to feel interesting once more, and you stopped dreading the feeling of waking up in the morning. You had started to enjoy your coworkers, gradually even learning a few Eridian words at a time. You traded your words like children exchanging candy, and then you and Ryland spoke about them late at night while he was prepping his lesson plans.
One night, you caught yourself staring at him as he graded papers, transfixed by the way his muscles twitched as his hand scribbled across the pages. Suddenly, his muscles were back, and there was fat on his stomach, and you saw him smile at you multiple times a day. You knew it hadn’t really been sudden, but you felt as though you were truly taking him in for the first time in a long while.
You looked in the mirror, the only one that you had in your house, and realized you were the same. Your muscles had grown back in, your skin was no longer sickly, and your ribcage wasn’t visible anymore. You looked healthy and you felt strong.
For a moment, you caught Ryland’s eyes in the mirror and he quickly looked away, stifling his smile, and acting like he had been looking down at his notes the whole time.
“You look better too,” you murmured, not quite having the nerve to turn around and face him.
He looked at you through the mirror again. “I know, it’s just good to recognize your face again.”
You opened your mouth to respond but nothing came out, so you let the moment pass.
Ryland’s cooking was the cause of most of it. No matter how bad of a mood you were in, you couldn’t resist his food, and you started to make a habit of keeping him company while he made you both dinner. You talked about work and your Earth memories, and the passing of the seasons, but you mostly talked about how the both of you were doing.
One night he made pancakes, and as he babbled onto you about something that had happened at school, you got an idea. It burst into your mind with color and urgency and you sneakily grabbed the chocolate chips from the counter when his back had been turned.
He spun around and frowned, picking up the container of flour to make sure that it hadn’t snuck under it somehow.
You watched as he opened cabinets and pulled out drawers, and you grabbed a handful to snack on as you watched your show. Unfortunately, your bite was a little loud and Ryland immediately caught you in the act.
He folded his arms across his chest. “I should’ve known it was you.”
You shrugged, but didn’t give it back just yet. “Its been awhile,” you said, and it came out softer than you’d meant it to.
Ryland sighed and dropped his arms. “Too long, some might say,” he answered, as if you didn’t have to explain yourself at all.
You had started to do things without someone having to drag it out of you, and your scientists seemed to watch you from a little further away. You started to dance in the living room of your small cottage, and only got caught by Ryland once. You tended to your garden and you loved your job and you always made time for Rocky and Adrian.
As if on que, everyone around you had started to bloom, like they had just been waiting on you to catch up. Rocky and Ryland’s conversations grew more animated, and soon your house was covered with trinkets that the little Erids had given you, or as Ryland liked to call them, ‘his pebbles’.
One morning you woke up to find Ryland making bacon and eggs. You yawned and stretched in the doorway and he immediately noticed your presence.
“Want some?” he asks, pointing to the pan with a spatula.
You nodded and stepped into the kitchen with a skip in your step. “Yes, please.”
You sat and watched him make it, taking in the careful way that he flipped the eggs so the yolk didn’t break.
He handed you a plate, and you sunk into one of the seats at the little island in the middle of your kitchen. “Did you like my gift?”
You frowned for a moment, looking over at him to find him wryly eyeing you from over the top of his glasses.
“What?”
His eyes flicked down at your plate, and you followed his gaze towards the perfectly arranged smiley face that he’d made out of your two eggs and a piece of bacon.
You snorted and rolled your eyes. “You are such a dork,” you murmured, grabbing a piece of toast to dig in your eggs.
He narrowed his eyes at you, his gaze more intense. “Really? Cause I’m pretty sure I just got a laugh out of you.”
You shook your head, instead choosing to shovel your food into your mouth rather than face him.
Ryland spun his chair around, fully placing all of his attention firmly on you. “Are you sure? I swear I heard a snort.”
Your eyes flitted towards him and even that millisecond nearly made you melt into the floor. The way he looked at you with such a caring look in his eyes but that little mischievous smirk made you feel both too loved and too preciously vulnerable. You felt your face heat up and you suddenly felt like you knew what was coming next. A prickling sense of foreshadowing threatened to swallow you whole, but you pushed the feeling away. “Nope. Just rolled my eyes.”
“Right,” Ryland said, his voice rising in pitch, but only moving closer towards you.
Suddenly, your mind was filled with visions of a Ryland and you from long ago, ones where he would’ve picked you up and dug his fingers into your sides. Memories of raspberries blown on the sensitive skin of your neck and fingernails scratching across your stomach flooded your senses. It hit you like that first wave had a few months ago, and it made you want to crawl into the great depths of the cool beyond. The feeling had been gone for so long that you had nearly forgotten about it, but here you were, already a little breathless. Though Ryland was only looking at you, it almost felt like his hands were already there, climbing up your sides and the thought made shivers cascade down your spine and tingles crawl up your neck. You almost instinctively moved your arms to cover your stomach, but no one was there for you to defend against. A sense of want, perhaps even need filled you, and you realized that you missed the feeling. You wanted him closer, and your giggles to fill up the small cottage.
“I didn’t laugh,” you forced out, barely managing to keep eye contact as you said it. It had been different on the Hail Mary, it was an unspoken thing that when you mouthed off or complained that you were bored, you got tickled. You had told him you didn't mind it at first, and then told him you liked it. You were on a suicide mission, so everything else seem inconsequential, embarrassment and dignity long forgotten. You had thought you were going to die, but here you were, alive and well, and that familiar feeling wrapping around you like a quilted blanket.
Except now, you were alive, and Ryland was looking at you like you were one of his experiments that he didn’t quite have a hypothesis for yet.
“Well, then I guess I’ll just have to find another way to make you laugh.”
He leaned back into his own chair and out of your personal space and you felt the loss of attention immediately. Fighting for anything, you reached out and poked his shoulder.
“Good luck with that,” you remarked, hoping you sounded snarky instead of desperately hopeful.
Ryland looked at you out of the corner of his eye, his lips momentarily twitching, but didn’t otherwise retaliate. You internally searched for a way to keep the moment going, but your mind was drawing blanks, and before you knew it, you were helping him clear the kitchen.
Shortly after, he moved to the little love seat to grade papers, his usual Saturday morning routine, and you disappeared back into your bedroom, cursing yourself for your inaction.
You shut the door behind yourself, and sunk to the floor against it, holding your face in your hands. You groaned and blushed, thinking of the way that he had looked at you and wondered what he’d been thinking. You didn’t know how much he’d thought of those playful moments on the Hail Mary, or if he’d care to repeat them either. You’d changed a lot since the ship had taken off, and he had too, he might not even want to tickle you anymore, and that thought scared you more than anything. You had come back from your darkness, but what if the two of you were too different now?
You debated this thought as you made your bed and opened your windows to let the sea breeze in. You couldn’t bear to sit with your own thoughts so you started to clean your room, which luckily wasn’t as bad as it had been a few months ago. You played music from your computer as you worked, distracting yourself from the storm that was brewing in your brain.
A soft knock came from the door a few hours after you’d taken a break for lunch and you slipped your headphones down onto your neck to open it.
Ryland stood there in his soft jacket that had the little foxes on it. “You want to head over to Rocky and Adrian’s? We’re watching The Barbie movie.”
You placed your headphones on the desk and shut off your computer. “Sure.”
“Wow, and I didn’t even have to drag you along,” Ryland teased.
“You’ve never had to drag me,” you crossed your arms. “That’s a bit dramatic.”
Ryland held up a finger, a silly grin on his face. “No, but I could if I wanted to.
You deadpanned. “You could not.”
He raised his brows and you felt the thing inside of you unfurling and beginning to take root. “Could so.”
“Could not.”
In an instant, Ryland was reaching his hands out towards you and you jumped out of instinct. Unfortunately, your instincts were a little out of tune and he easily grabbed ahold of you, hoisting you up bridal style.
You squeaked and immediately pictured the noise in a different context, one that had you in helpless giggles and pointless squirming.
“Ryland!” you yelled, your heart rate rising and the heat coming back to your face.
Suddenly, you were back on the ground, your feet firmly planted on your stone floors. You looked over at him in confusion but he only shrugged. “Just had to prove a point.”
You tried to keep the disappointment off of your face, but you didn’t have much time to think about it before Rocky was barging into the cottage. “Friends taking forever, humans need Rocky to come get them for everything? Question?”
Ryland chortled. “Rock, we were literally just about to walk out the door.”
Rocky wiggled his carapace and it took you a second to realize he was imitating shaking his head. “Come, come, come, we go watch movie now.”
Ryland and you half walked half ran across the beach to keep up with Rocky, kicking up sand as you went. You turned the corner and saw the familiar farm style house with a large red door.
It opened as if sensing your presence, revealing Adrian standing behind it. They moved out of the hallway to let all of you through, closing the door behind you since you were the last one in. “Did Rocky come get again?”
You opened your mouth but Rocky was faster. “Yes, Adrian. Was taking forever.”
Adrian quietly grumbled something in Eridian that you didn’t know the translation for and you couldn’t help but smile. After everything you’d gone through and all the other things that Ryland had put into that translator, he still hadn’t added curse words.
You heard Rocky and Ryland starting to already get into a very loud conversation so you and Adrian headed down the hall after them.
Their house was wide, open, and tall, but it was never cold. The hallway led to a series of entryways leading to their large staircase, the food storage room, and their living room, though it had a different name in Eridian that you couldn’t quite remember.
Rocky and Adrian were both very uncomfortable walking around on soft surfaces so the floor was mostly composed of stone, with the exception of the conversation pit in the middle of the room. There were no windows, though you could see one off of the entranceway to the room to the left of the tv. Luckily, the lack of light made it work excellently as a media room for your human eyes.
Just under the tv was a color to texture machine that was set to match the above screen frame for frame, so there was no delay between what all of you were seeing through your different senses. Rocky and Ryland were by the fireplace, arguing over something with the connector between the computer and the tv.
“I think it would just work better if you put it-”
“Grace not making sense. Statement. Rocky can only-” he started but a curt buzz from Adrian shut him up.
The boys separated and you and Adrian took your seats. You normally sat in front of them when you had movie nights, not because either of you had planned it that way but because Rocky needed to be behind Ryland so that the two of them could blubber on about the movie without having to lean over anyone else.
You settled in on the right side of the pit, stretching your legs out and rubbing your feet together like a cricket as you cozied up.
You looked over and saw Ryland grinning at you. “Comfortable now?”
You eyed him cautiously, waiting for him to make a joke but the punchline never came. Instead, he opened his arms to you, raising his brows.
You held still for a second. It had been so long since you’d been held, since you’d even let anyone hug you that you were worried you might break upon contact. It hadn’t occurred to you to ask for those things when you were so deep in the darkness. However, your body had betrayed you before you even realized it, leaning in towards him without your permission.
His arms curled around you and pulled you towards him, allowing you to rest your head on his shoulder, and moving you so that you were flush against his side, the soft material of his sweatpants brushing against your bare shins.
Your heart immediately started hammering in your chest, and you went as stiff as a board. The movie started to play and you knew you should relax, but you couldn’t get yourself to calm down. You couldn’t remember how much of your weight you were supposed to lean on him or what you were supposed to do with your hands, and you were worried that your hair was getting caught in his beard or the zipper on his sweater.
Ryland’s hand sat across your shoulder, firm and certain and you longed for the certainty behind his touch. You looked over at his hands, and then pictured them sneaking over to the side of your neck, then abruptly looked away.
You heard murmuring beside your ear but you looked over at Ryland to find him staring at you. “What?”
“I asked if you were sore from your swim?”
You frowned, thinking of the way you had done more splashing around than actual swimming. You hadn’t even known that Ryland was home at the time and you had no idea why he would be asking about it. “Why?”
“You just seemed really tense, I was wondering if you were sore.”
“Oh,” you said, to give yourself time. If Ryland could tell you were tense then you could only imagine what Rocky and Adrian were thinking, and suddenly the way that Adrian had caught you at the door made more sense. You rolled your shoulders as if deciding but it did twinge a little bit. “I guess it does.”
“Do you want me to give you a massage?”
“What?” you asked, though you actually had heard him that time, you just couldn’t process what your ears were taking in.
Ryland seemed to bite back a smile at this, but at least saved you the embarrassment of teasing you. “Would you be alright with me giving you a massage?”
You tried to make your face neutral though you had the sense that you vaguely resembled a frightened alley cat. Ryland moved you forward a bit so that he could get to your shoulders, and as soon as his thumbs dug into the back of your shoulder blades you started to melt.
With each press of his firm hands you became lighter and softer in his grip, your shoulders lowering to their normal height, and your body sagging with weight and heavily leaning into Ryland.
To his credit, he made no comment on the movement, he just continued on his quest to rid you of all your pains as bright pink cars drove by on the tv screen.
“Hey,” you said, a little hazy from how sleepy he was making you. “Doesn’t that guy kind of look like you?”
Ryland looked from you to the screen. “I do not look like that guy at all.”
You gestured up to the character on the tv, doubling down on your argument now that he was disagreeing with you. “He looks like he could be your twin. We would just have to dress you in pink western gear.
Ryland snorted, giving you a very unimpressed look. “Okay, as much as I could pull that off, that man looks nothing like me.”
You sat up, pulling yourself out of Ryland’s arms out of indignation. “Your face is literally the same!”
He leveled a look at you from over his glasses. “I think your skill for human facial recognition has just grown weaker after your time away from Earth,”
“You’ve been away from Earth the same amount of time as me!” you protested.
“You know what?
“What?” you challenged, and then Ryland was on top of you. Your stomach did a somersault as you shrieked and tried to get away to no avail.
“What are you dohoing?” you asked, already giggling as he reached towards your neck. Your shoulders curled up towards your ears, but Ryland only grabbed your head and roughly rubbed his knuckles against your hair, creating frizz and only making you giggle harder.
“Owhoohohw!” you yelled, yet you were flush with the disappointment that he wasn’t doing what you thought he would.
“Wait, am I actually hurting you?” Ryland asked, his hand still on your head, but unmoving now.
You froze in indecision. While he wasn’t doing what you wanted, it at least offered you a little bit of physical contact. Then again, you did actually want to watch the movie and didn’t want to bother Rocky and Adrian with your wrestling.
“Rocky and Grace go and get popcorn for movie,” Adrian suggested, though they might as well have added the ‘statement’ at the end of it for the level of question that was left in their voice. They twisted around to look at Rocky and he warbled back and forth with them for a moment before coming to an abrupt stand.
“Yes, Rocky and Adrian forgot human food,” he announced, grabbing Grace with one of his legs and pulling him to his feet. “Go get now.”
You turned around to look at Adrian in confusion, but they beat you to it.
Adrian leaned in closer towards you, like they were trying to get a better look. “What is human not telling Grace?”
You puffed a breath of air through your cheeks. “Nothing.”
Adrian rocked back. “Fine. Stubborn. Will get out of you anyways.”
Before you could question what their words meant, you were getting pulled towards them, arms snaking around you and claws digging into your sides.
You jolted so hard that you nearly threw yourself out of Adrian’s grip, but they had too many arms for your escape to come that easily.
Their pincer-like hands gently squeezed and wiggled into your sides and dear god did it tickle.
You were nearly vibrating on the spot from just a few prods, like your body had only needed a few months to forget how to deal with the sensation. You clasped a hand over your mouth to keep your laughter from exploding out of you. You were sure Rocky could already hear you, but you certainly didn’t need Ryland walking in on this and exposing you.
Adrian seemed to catch onto your ploy, and switched tactics, instead using one of their claws to pull your arm away from your side, another pincer reaching in to softly brush across your armpit, making you let out a squeak and a few stray giggles.
“Adrian!” you yelped,
“Yes? Question?” Adrian said flatly.
You risked taking your hand off of your mouth another time to talk. “The bohohys will see!”
Adrian wiggled one of their unused arms. “If not want Ryland and Grace to see, then tell Adrian what is secret.”
They moved down to your hip and gave it an experimental squeeze, making your leg jolt out to the side.
“This!” you squealed, your dam finally breaking and your giggles starting to pour out.
At this, Adrian slowed, though they still rested a claw on your hip.
“Human explain,” they said, very matter of factly.
You groaned and covered your face, but you knew you only had a matter of minutes, if not seconds till Rocky and Ryland came back and you couldn’t risk Ryland walking in as you spoke. You forced yourself to take a big deep breath then push your words out.
“I want Grace to tickle me but I don’t know if he wants to anymore?”
“What? Question?”
You groaned again, immediately regretting your decision to speak at all. You covered your face with your hands but you were only in the safety of darkness for a second before Adrian pulled your arms down to your sides.
“Not say words in judgement but not understand either.”
You sighed, your face burning, and resigned yourself to telling another person that you liked this odd thing. “Well tickling is-”
“Know what tickling is. Know what tickling means to human. Is why Adrian just did it. Why human think Grace not want to tickle? Question?”
You decided to momentarily ignore the fact that Adrian somehow knew infinitely more than they should’ve. “It’s been a long time and we’ve both changed. What if that side of him isn’t there anymore?”
“Adrian not see Rocky for a long time, still like Rocky.”
You frowned. “That’s not the same.”
“Friend must promise they tell Grace.”
Your jaw dropped. “What?”
Adrian continued on like you weren’t looking at them with wide eyes. “Promise Adrian you will tell Grace tonight.”
You started to back up, as if putting distance between the two of you would put a barrier between yourself and that terrifying idea. “There’s no way. I can’t.”
Adrian seemed on the verge of saying something else, but then the boys walked back in.
“Who’s ready for popcorn?” Ryland asked, carrying in a tub that was far too big for just the two of you.
He plopped down next to you in the pit of pillows and blankets and offered you some. You didn’t particularly want any, but you took a handful in order to have something to do with your hands.
Before the movie started back up Ryland stretched out, coincidentally putting his legs over top of yours, and suddenly your mouth felt very dry. You felt as though you had forgotten how to breathe or how much you were allowed to move.
You looked over and saw Ryland looking over at you, an overly adoring look on his face.
“What?” you questioned, almost defensively.
“Nothing,” he laughed heartily. “I just thought that you look especially adorable right now.”
You rolled your eyes and without thinking, you plunked your head down on his shoulder. “You’re so obnoxiously sweet.”
“Oh, you love it,” he cooed, and then he was curling his arm around your shoulder, settling into where you had leaned against him.
Rocky resumed the move from where you had been pre tussle, and you quickly fell into the bright hot pink world of barbieland. Rocky and Grace talked about the various music from the movie the whole time, and Adrian had to shush them several times. Even when you couldn’t hear the movie though, you at least could appreciate the bright costumes and set pieces in the fictional world. You couldn’t imagine how jarring it would be to go from bright beautiful barbieland to the complexity of the real world, which was both extraordinary and painful at times.
While everyone else was still hooked on the movie you glanced around the room at the roaring fireplace and the plush red conversation pit and the wide doorways to accommodate your friends. It wasn’t all that colorful, afterall Eridians couldn’t see color, but it felt real and bold all the same.
Everyone gave a laugh and you turned to the television right as mattel ceo started to be tickled to pieces by his workers. You felt yourself suppress the jolt just a second before you would’ve alerted the entire room to your nervous situation.
Adrian’s arm curled around you firmly, and you felt the physical press of the stone with the same intensity of their request.
You tried to settle back into Ryland, but you couldn’t see to focus for the tiny amount of the rest of the movie, your mind running too fast for you to keep up with it.
Before you knew it, you went from crying about the acceptance of the pain and the beauty of the real world to being whipped into the upbeat credit songs.
Ryland leaned towards you as he stretched out like a cat. “I still don’t think that guy looks like me.”
You stifled your smile with a yawn. “Agree to disagree.”
Rocky tip tapped his way over in front of the tv, turning the system off. “Humans like movie?”
Ryland wiggled his hand back and forth. “It’s lacking a little on the intersectionality bit, but hopefully Earth has progressed by now.”
Rocky stilled, one of his arms halted halfway in the air. “Grace wonder about earth sometimes? Question?”
Ryland drew in a breath, and when you looked over at him you found that he was already staring at you.
You tilted your head and his eyes seemed to soften in recognition. You watched the way he looked at you and realized he wasn’t appraising you, he was looking for reassurance. Only the three of you could truly understand what you’d gone through, and the two of you were the only humans in this solar system. Since Ryland did much better than you on Erid it was easy to forget it, but he still needed your companionship. “Yeah,” he said hoarsely then cleared his throat.” You reached down and squeezed his hand. No one else could understand the love that you had for your strange blue little planet and still not entirely desire to go back.
Ryland looked back up at Rocky, a new light in his eyes. “Yeah, I guess I do.”
Rocky’s arm snapped back down to his side. “Grace want to go back to earth? Question?”
At this, Ryland laughed and then pushed himself to a stand with a groan. “No buddy, I think you’re still stuck with me. I like it here with you three.”
Ryland offered you a hand up and you took it, starting to follow the boys out until Adrian caught you by the arm.
“What more evidence does human need? Question?”
You rolled your eyes, knowing it was nothing short of a death sentence to admit to Adrian that they had been right. “I can’t.”
Adrian gripped your wrist with only one of their claws. “Promise me you tell him.”
“Adrian-“ you started.
They pulled you back a little bit, making you stumble slightly. “Promise. Adrian need it
You raised a brow. Their voice sounded different than usual. “Why?”
Their grip loosened slightly. “To make sure is okay.”
Your arms went limp at your sides as you looked up at them. Suddenly you remembered all of the times they’d invited you over for movies and your job in the lab and every single dark pit that your Eridian friends had tried to pull you out of. They’d worked so hard to meet you where you were at and the taste of guilt soured in your mouth.
You sighed, blowing the feeling away.
“Fine, I promise.”
Adrian rattled side to side, the most expression that you’d seen from them in a long while. “Good, tell Adrian about later.”
They pushed you towards the door, and you barely managed to stay on your feet as you half tripped on the threshold, Ryland managing to throw his arm out to stop you from toppling forward.
“Woah, you alright there?”
You nodded, quickly leaning out of the firm press of his arm, but not before you imagined those strong arms pulling your hands above your head as his fingers wiggled above you, slowly descending towards your armpits until they finally touched down, making you kick out and scream. You wondered if he remembered the spot, if he still recalled how he would wiggle both of his hands into your armpits and raspberry your neck until your face was as warm as the sun and you admitted that you lost whatever silly argument the two of you had gotten into.
“Bye, get home safe friends,” Rocky yelled, and you nearly jumped as you were abruptly pulled back into reality. You looked to your right and desperately tried not to think about the fact that the person who you had been daydreaming about tickling you was staring at you.
Then you accidentally looked down at his hands and your skin broke out in goosebumps, and you seriously doubted whether you could actually manage to live through telling him.
“Did you like the movie?” Ryland asked, staring out at the sea.
You couldn’t look at him and stand still, so you started walking back to the cottage and hoped he followed. “Yeah,” you turned around to see that Ryland was only a step behind you. “I thought it was fun.”
“When was the last time you had fun?”
Your mind flashed back to taking his beaker on the Hail Mary, Rocky pinning your legs so Ryland could scribble around your tummy to his heart's content. He’d only let up until you admit that you just took it to get tickled, and though you had cursed and complained your whole way through it, happiness had flown through your veins like he had inserted it straight through an IV.
However, you knew you weren’t feeling brave enough yet to give him the real answer so you did what any scared person would do, you pivoted.
“I had fun tonight with you guys.” You added a smile, one that would hopefully really sell it, but Ryland only grinned like he knew you were lying.
“No.” He poked your hip with his elbow. “Like really had fun, like one of those memories where you think of it as you lay awake at night and it makes you smile as you drift off to sleep.”
He turned to you and his brown eyes were too warm, so you looked out towards the sea instead, letting the salty breeze cool your warm cheeks. “I don’t know. Probably back on the Hail Mary.”
“Really? It was that long ago?” There was something in his voice, not judgement but concern and he had probably already spent too much time worrying about you.
“When was yours?”
A puff of air came out of Ryland’s nose. “When I saw you dancing in the kitchen the other day.”
You shoved at his shoulder and jogged up towards the cottage, really anywhere to get away from his teases. “I thought you weren’t going to bring that up!”
He grabbed your arm, pulling you back.
“No, no I’m not making fun of you.”
You pulled away from him just a little bit. “Sure you aren’t.
Ryland pulled out your housekey from his pocket. “I just thought it was sweet.”
You narrowed your eyes, opening the storm door for him. “I don’t believe you.”
He turned the key but he didn’t open the door yet, instead, he only had eyes for you. “I hadn’t seen you dance in so long, I missed it.”
Your mouth opened but nothing came out, he opened the door and walked in, throwing his keys in the bowl.
You watched him step into the kitchen and fill his waterbottle, a thing he normally did right before bed, and it spurred you into action.
You shut the door behind you and shuffled in after him, grabbing the matching blue one that always sat next to his as the little ice cubes clunked into the bottom of his bottle.
“Ryland-” you started, then lost your momentum.
“Yes?” he said, setting it down and turning to look at you. That was the thing about Ryland Grace, if his attention was on you then all of his attention was on you. It was a blessing and a curse, and in your position it felt like the hot glow of a spotlight, making you unable to see into the crowd.
You tried to remember the promise that you’d given Adrian. You didn’t break your word, certainly not with people who had saved your life, so you needed to find a way to ask.
“Would you stay up with me for a little bit?”
Ryland cocked his head, the same thing that you’d watched him do time and time again when he couldn’t figure something out in the lab. When he got that way then it was only a matter of time till he figured it out.
“Yeah, do you mind if I go change first?” he asked, still not having taken his eyes off of you.
You cradled your arm with the other to give yourself some physical contact. “That’s fine.”
“Okay, give me a few minutes.” He grabbed a hold of your shoulder and gave it a light squeeze. “I’ll be right back out.”
He finished up in the kitchen and shut the door to his room, leaving you with yourself and your flaming skin. You silently groaned, and forced yourself to do the same.
As you picked your pajamas you tried not to think about things that would give him easy access. You changed into a pair of soft shorts and a tank top, but threw a sweatshirt overtop of it.
When you left your bedroom his door was still closed so you headed out to the deck on the side of the living room.
The breeze was cool in the evening air and it felt nice against your overly warm body. You sat on the big couch that faced the ocean and looked up to see the full moon. The scientists had added one for the two of you, and even the lunar cycle. Even though it wasn’t really real, looking at it still calmed you. It always seemed to put you at peace, the knowledge that there were so many bigger things out there that would live on past you. The sun might witness your embarrassment, but it cared naught for it, because it was a star with much bigger things to do.
You felt the same about the sea, which is why it had been added in, that and the fact that Ryland needed the white noise to sleep.
As if sensing that you were thinking about him, he appeared in the doorway and letting out some of the light from the kitchen. “Hey,” he said softly.
“Hi,” you said, and instinctively curled your legs under yourself.
“So,” he started, and then he was walking across the deck to meet you. “Are you going to tell me what’s wrong?”
He sat down next to you, leaving several feet of space on the couch behind him.
“Nothing’s wrong.”
Ryland raised his brows but didn’t question you. Instead he just stared at you in the semi darkness, his eyes unmoving from yours.
“Don’t look at me like that,” you blurted out, though not unkindly.
He cocked his head. “Like what?”
“I don’t know. It just feels very intense.” Your gaze went back to the ocean, trying to gather up courage from its depths. “Like you’re looking right through me.”
You saw him shrug out of the corner of your eye. “I don’t mean to, it’s just the way I look at people.”
You started to feel bad, not wanting to insult him because you were scared, but then he was doing the talking for you again. “Maybe that it’s just because you feel too seen right now.
You kept your eyes on the horizon, forcing yourself to take deep breaths of the salty air.
“Your silence is speaking volumes,” he said, but his voice was starting to go high enough that it could’ve passed as teasing. Luckily he broke into a laugh before you could try to mutter something completely incoherent. “Talk to me.”
“There’s-” you started, then shifted so you were facing him. “There’s something I want to tell you, and I’ve told you it before, but I’m scared to do it again.”
Ryland shifted on the couch, the metal frame creaking slightly in the silence. “Is there anything I can do to make it easier?”
The words ‘don’t tease’ were on your lips, but you didn’t want to say it and then have to explain that you didn’t really mean it. What you wanted to ask was if he was still a little of the same man that you’d come to know on the Hail Mary, if he still loved how you were obsessed with giggling and touch, if he treasured those happy moments like you did, if he liked the version of you that had healed, or if he had only accepted those things because the earlier times were so dire.
“I don’t think so.”
You settled into silence for a long moment, like Ryland knew you needed the space to work up the words. When they came to the surface though, you couldn’t quite bring yourself to say the full, real thing. “Do you remember when we used to play fight on the Hail Mary?”
Ryland smiled, the moon illuminating his bright eyes. “Of course”
Your words came faster this time. “Do you miss it?
“Do you?” Ryland asked immediately in return, and his stubbornness almost immediately made you forget what you were afraid of, your voice filled with determination instead.
“I asked first.”
“Yes.” You squinted in the darkness and realized Ryland was blushing. He seemed flustered, perhaps embarrassed and it made you push on.
“Do you remember the times you tackled me to the ground?”
Ryland shifted slightly. “And tickled you?”
Your breath got caught and you had to clear your throat. “That, yeah. What do you think about that now?”
Ryland held his hands up, fiddling with his fingernails. “I’m sorry let me just make sure we’re talking about the same thing, think about what exactly now?”
You knew this was when you were supposed to say the word tickle, but you couldn’t quite do it. “Those moments.”
Ryland rested his head on his hand. “The playfighting and the tickling?”
You bit your lip and nodded.
Ryland hunched over, like he was trying to make himself smaller. “I think they were sweet, they were fun. I think we both needed an escape and we used play to cope.”
You fiddled with a silver string that hung off of the bottom of your pajama shorts. “So those are things that only happened cause we were stuck on the ship?”
You briefly looked up to catch Ryland frowning. “Why would you think that?”
You went back to toying with your stray hem. “I don’t know, people do crazy things in the face of death, maybe those moments would be weird to you now.”
Ryland readjusted himself. “Okay, now I’m lost again, are we talking about playfighting, or are we really talking about me tickling you?”
You closed your eyes. “The second thing.”
“Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh,” he said, and though you weren’t looking at him you could feel the knowingness in his voice.
“Don’t say it like that,” you groaned, covering your face up.
All I said was oh!” Ryland laughed, and somehow even that felt mean.
“Do you know what I’m talking about now?” you asked, covering your face up with your hands.
“You mean how you like being tickled?”
“Oh my GOD. You cannot just say that!” You pushed his knee, and then rested your face on his legs.
“I’m sorry! I’m not even trying to tease you yet! I’m just making sure that we’re on the same page.”
“Yes, it’s tickles,” you sighed. “I wanted to ask you if it was something you still wanted to do. I’ve been thinking about it since breakfast.”
He began stroking the back of your head, sending shivers down your spine. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
You spoke softly, almost in a whisper. “I was scared.”
“Scared of what?”
“That you didn’t like it anymore, that you had lost interest, that you no longer cared to play games with this version of me, that you found it weird now that you have more people to interact with.”
Ryland’s brows furrowed. “Why would any of that be true?”
“I don’t know.” You threw your hands up. “I didn’t say it was rational, I just said I was scared.”
At this, he seemed to soften, he dropped your wrists and placed his hands on your knees. “Actually, I was in the same boat.”
“What?”
“You didn’t notice how I kept trying to initiate physical contact today?”
The day started to playback as you noticed how his hands were on your skin even now. “Why?”
“You’ve seemed more alive recently. It felt like you came back to me and I started to wonder if that old version of you was still in there, if you still wanted to cozy into me like how we watched movies on the Hail Mary when we were nutrient deprived and delirious. I don’t want those times back, but I wanted you back, and I was too scared to ask you for it just in case you weren’t ready. I didn’t want to rush along the process that you’re going through.”
You were at a loss of words for a moment, stuck between nearly laughing and the sudden striking urge that you needed to cry. “You missed tickling me?”
Ryland blushed deeper. “I missed tickling you.”
He was starting to lean towards you, his hands starting to twitch toward your sides, but you knew you would only be brave for so long and you needed to hear it from him. “So you don’t think it’s weird now?”
Ryland stilled. “I think to be human is to be weird and I love indulging you in your weirdness.” He tapped a finger to your collarbone. “And don’t you dare forget that.”
His words made you feel gooey on the insides, so much so that you couldn't even say something snarky about it. “Awwwww.”
Ryland smiled and held his arms open. You accepted his offer without question and you wrapped your arms snuggly around his middle, tucking your face into his chest. His arms felt firm around your lower back as he curled you in towards him, tucking you in like he was making a cocoon just for you.
He gave you an extra firm squeeze and you settled in further, sighing deeply as he wrapped his arms all the way around you, his hands pressed against your sides.
“You’re so nice and warm,” you murmured.
Ryland laid back pulling you against him like you were his personal blanket and you were almost ready to fall asleep like that until he flipped you around.
You landed underneath him, pinned to the couch by his bodyweight. “Ryland, what are you-”
“I’m sorry but you had to see this coming,” he said, and you could practically hear his grin as his fingers started wiggling into your sides.
“NO!” you shrieked, but there was nowhere to go with his full weight on top of you. He had started out barely moving, as if he was testing the waters, but he quickly settled into a routine of raking his fingers down your sides before squeezing a few times to keep you on your toes.
It tickled like hell and it was already so much worse than all of the times that he’d tickled you on the Hail Mary, and it made you severely wonder how you had survived his reign of torment. If it was possible, you’d only gotten more ticklish with time, every twitch of his fingers turning into a laugh that threatened to consume you whole.
“Rylahahahhand, wahahahahit!” you squealed, your eyes shut and wiggling side to side.
“Oh no, no, no,” Ryland grumbled. “No more waiting. I’ve had enough waiting. In fact, I’ve decided we need to put you on a tickling regimen now.”
A shriek was ripped out of you, making you open your eyes. “WHAt?”
“Mhmm, I’ll work on it after I get my lesson plans done. We need to reinstate weekly, no, daily tickling,” he smiled down at you and though his hands stilled, you were still giggling.
“That is NOT necessary.”
Ryland pulled his arms out from underneath you and grabbed your hands as he sat up. You tried to pull out of his grip, but your hands were quickly pinned to your chest, leaving your stomach completely exposed.
“Well we have to tickle you when you’re snarky and when you complain about work even though you love your job, and we have to tickle you anytime you look adorable-” he pauses just long enough to tweak your side and your squeak and flinch. “So that’s at least every day, if not a couple times a day at least.”
“I’m not even that snarky,” you say breathily.
“Oh, so you’re not gonna curse me out if I do this?” Ryland softly grabs a handful of your sweatshirt and top and slowly pulls it up, making you watch as he slowly exposes your tummy.
You suck your stomach in and start kicking your feet out on instinct. “No, no, no, Ryland don’t you fucking dare.”
“Too late.”
He bends down and you cringe away before the raspberry is even there, scrunching your face up and preparing for the onslaught of vibration against your nerves. He pauses for a moment, just long enough to make you wonder why you haven’t felt it yet and you chance a peak at him right as his head ducks down.
The noise he makes is loud and you’re sure that Rocky and Adrian probably hear your consequent scream before you start squealing with laughter. The raspberry seems to last forever, longer than you thought was even possible as he nuzzles his stubble into your skin. You shake your head side to side just to give the energy somewhere to go.
“I HATE you!” you screech as he starts scritching across your stomach, always too fast for you to even figure out where his hands are.
Ryland only smiles down at you “Are the little tickles making you feel embarrassed?”
“Shut UP!”
“I would, but I know you don’t want me to.”
“Yes I DO!”
Ryland’s hands move down to your hips dusting across the bones with light traces that are far too ticklish for someone who is supposed to be one third of humanity's savior.
“Get ohoohff of thehehehre!”
“Give me somewhere else to go then,” Ryland stated.
Your eyes fly open despite the laughter spasms that were exploding out of you. “WhAT?”
“If you want me to move, then give me somewhere else to go.” HIs fingers twirled around your hips, occasionally squeezing into the divot and making you feel like you were hallucinating under the touch of his fingertips.
“Yohohohou’re mahahahaking mehehehe phihihihick?”
Ryland raised a brow. “What? Am I flustering you or something?”
“NO!” you shrieked out as he pressed into your hips again, making you want to curl up into a ball.
“Ohhhhh, I’m not?” he asked, and you knew this was your last chance to apologize and tell him that you were well beyond flustered, but you chose to keep going down the road to see where it went.
“NO!” you yelled through laughter, and then Ryland let up.
“Okay, let’s test that theory.”
He scooted forward, dropping one wrist in favor of grabbing the other and pinning it far above your head so that your arm was all the way stretched out, leaving your armpit fully on display and utterly helpless.
“No, not this, please,” you murmured, closing your eyes and covering your face with your free arm.
“Uh-uh.” He removed your arm from your face. “If you want it you have to watch it.”
You groaned and attempted to bury your head in the couch. “You’re so mean to me.”
Ryland softly brushed your hair out of your face. “You’re not getting tickled if you can’t watch.”
Your head whipped towards him. “That's unfair!”
“You can’t watch this?” he asked, then held his wiggling hand above your head, fingers in the shape of a claw playing the air like a piano.
“Tickle, tickle, tickle,” he whispered, the hand getting closer and closer to your armpit.”
Just as he was about to touch the skin, you yelped and closed your eyes only to hear Ryland laughing at you.
“Rude!”
He covered his mouth as if it made it better, as if you couldn’t see the mischief in his eyes. “I’m sorry, you just look so cute when you’re so embarrassed like this.”
“Shut up.”
His wiggling fingers appeared above your face once more and in spite of yourself, you gasped when he dipped down quickly only to pull away and start squeezing your hips again.
You shrieked and chortled, weakly pushing at his hands since you were no longer being pinned down.
“I told you I wasn’t switching spots until you picked one,” he teased.
“I CAN’T!” you yelled, your body twitching every time his devious fingers dug into the sensitive spot in the divot.
“I think you can,” he replied in a sing-song voice.
“GRHAHACE PLHEHEHESE!” you begged, slapping at his hands as you descended further into your giggly drunkenness.
“Oh, last name? You must be getting desperate.”
You nodded your head weakly, but he only smirked at you and it made you wonder that if your time away had made you more ticklish that in turn, it had made him more evil. “Where do you want to be tickled?” he repeated.
“NOWHERE!” you insisted though you could see the answer written so clearly in your memory.
Ryland only rolled his eyes and if you had the breath to say it then you would’ve made some smart remark about how he looked exactly like his previous students. His hands eventually stilled, though they still rested on your hips.
“You have to make a decision, it’s the only way you get out.”
You sucked in a deep breath, once again refusing to look at him. “You deserve jail time for this. They need to make a prison for you here.”
“I actually wasn’t going to make you say the full sentence, but actually you’ve changed my mind.”
You shot up, your eyes going wide. “Wait, no please, I take it-”
Ryland shrugged and blew out a huff of air like he was actually disappointed. “No, too late. I think I’m gonna need a full sentence with the words ‘can you please’ and ‘tickle’ in there.”
You let your head thunk back against the couch, and you closed your eyes.
“With eye contact,” Ryland added, and you swore you were going to catch on fire.
“You’re the worst,” you groaned as you forced your eyes open.
You looked at him and were immediately hit with the full force of his attention and the way his eyes melted, like he was looking at you with all of the love and understanding in the world, like he saw right through your whole charade. The worst part was, he did.
“Can you please- can you,” You started, but couldn’t quite push the words out.
“Take your time,” he smiled and though it was genuine it only felt like a tease.
“Shut up.”
You looked at him square in his eyes and drew in a deep breath. “Can you tickle my armpits please?”
“Put your arms up.”
“I have to LET you?” you asked incredulously.
Ryland nodded, crossing his arms, and somehow you knew he wasn’t kidding. You squeezed your arms together against your chest barely managing to bring them so that your elbows were above your shoulders.
Ryland wordlessly flicked his fingers and you moved your arms so that they were just above your eyes, and you felt all of that uncovered skin shiver in the cool air.
Ryland looked unimpressed and made the gesture again. “Come on, up.”
Your jaw dropped from his sheer audacity. “They ARE up.”
“All the way,” he drawled, and you grimaced as you slowly stretched your arms high above your head and leaving all of you completely exposed.
“See? Now was that so hard,” he cooed, and just as you were about to respond, his hands dug into your armpits like little spiders, crawling around with feathers.
Your arms shot down, trapping his twitching fingers into your overly sensitive hollows. “YES!” you screeched, giggling and kicking your feet as your skin prickled with heat.
“Awe, does someone have a case of the giggles?” Ryland cooed, his lips coming dangerously close to your neck.
You had something on the tip of your tongue, a glorious insult that would leave him shocked that you had come up with something so clever, but all of your words got swallowed up by your laughter. As his fingers continued wiggling into your armpits, you screeched and twitched and could do nothing more until Ryland pulled his fingers out, allowing you a great breath of air.
“You. Are. Awful,” you heaved out, still squirming around in a desperate attempt to get rid of the phantom tickles.
“Yes, so awful for giving you exactly what you wanted. Practically the worst.”
You nodded. “I’m so glad you’re finally seeing reason.”
“Don’t make me go back to your armpits,” he threatened, holding up a finger but you only giggled.
“Alright, have you had enough little tickle magnet?”
“Mhmm,” you nodded, looking back out at the ocean, another vision of him burrowing his stubble into your neck appearing to you in a haze.
Ryland gently took a hold of your chin, pointing you back towards him. “Why do I get the sense you’re getting bashful on me again.
You covered you face with your hands. It should’ve been enough, you shouldn’t need more, but your brain was stuck on the image of his hands buried in your armpits and his head nuzzled into your neck.
“What do you want?” Ryland prodded softly.
“I can’t,” you groaned from beneath your hands.
He pulled them away from your face with some effort. “Come on, we’re all weird here. You can ask.”
You closed your eyes to talk since he had taken away your wall of protection. “It’s too embarrassing."
Ryland grabbed a hold of your shoulders. “To be known is to be embarrassed, or something, come on, out with it.”
You shook your head but finally looked up at him. “I can’t.”
“Here, I’ll close my eyes, will that help?”
Somehow his offer only made you feel more squishy and you groaned as your face only got more hot. “Can you keep doing the thing you were just doing? “
“Tickling your armpits?”
You nodded, and he started to grab ahold of your hands again but you held him off this time. “Wait, can you do the other thing too?”
“The what?” Ryland asked, leaning closer towards your face.
You were fairly certain that speaking the words outloud might send you to an early grave, but you forced them out anyways. “Can you raspberry my neck too?”
“While I’m tickling your armpits?” he asked, raising a brow.
You nodded, your words starting to fail you again.
“Wow, Erid made you brave, didn’t it?”
You were about to comment that it did, that the love of your friends had altered you as a human and your ways of communication, but you didn’t have the time cause Ryland was tilting your head to the side and taking in a deep breath.
You barely had enough time to take a breath of your own until he was burrowing into you and sending you into another peal of laughter. He shoved his fingers back into his armpits and you jolted with the shock of his fingernails curling against your skin.
You were both fighting him and leaning into him, unable to pull yourself away from his stubble nuzzling into your neck, and simultaneously shaking your head to get rid of his horrible raspberries vibrating across your nerves.
Your brain stopped making words, instead just falling down the slide of consciousness in a steady humming stream of it tickles, it tickles, it tickles. You screeched and wiggled around but it was all just a reaction, not an intentional thing you were doing. Your mind started to drift away on you, leaving you airy and pleasantly floaty.
Pretty soon you realized you were still giggling but Ryland was no longer tickling you.
“Had enough fun over there giggles?” he asked, peering down at you.
“Yehehehes!” you said, too tired to remember that you didn’t usually admit that.
Ryland lit up in a smile, a lack of snark in the way his lips twitched.
He pulled you up, sitting you upright on the couch, and you let him manhandle you, allowing him to use the arms that he’d worked so hard to get back.
He rose to get off the couch and you stared at his face, backlit by the moon. He took a step towards the door, and you grabbed ahold of his wrist.
“Cahahahlm down, I’m just going to go get your water. I’ll be right back,” he squeezed your shoulder and left the door open as he went. You watched him as he traveled to the island and all the way back to you.
“See, I promised, didn’t I?”
You remembered Adrian’s words from earlier and ruefully smiled to yourself. “A promise is how I got here.”
Ryland sat down next to you again. “How?”
You took a long swig from your waterbottle. It was bad enough that you were going to have to tell this story later, but had already used up all of your embarrassment for the night so it would be tomorrow's problem. “Adrian made me promise that I’d tell you I wanted tickled.”
Ryland clucked his tongue. “Wow, you said the word again.”
You lightly smacked him in the arm. “Because I’m still stupidly giggle drunk.”
Ryland smiled at you and cozied into the couch with a sigh. You leaned into his shoulder and he cradled the back of your neck. “Does that mean you can’t go to sleep yet?”
“Probably,” you glanced up at him from the corner of your eyes. “-but you’re welcome to go to bed.”
He shrugged you up. “No, I’ll stay up with you for a little bit.”
“Just let me know when you want to go inside,” you murmured, stifling a yawn that was refusing to back down. You nuzzled into his sweater and stared out at the fake sea in front of you.
You knew that above your little biodome was a galaxy of vast stars, and while the world was still unknowable and scary at times, you were glad that you had stuck around to see it all.

୨ৎ AND WE FALL ASLEEP TO THE SCENT (OF LONG-STEMMED ROSES)
⤷ tags: ryland grace x reader tickle fluff, romantic, 1k words
⤷ summary: ragebaiting ryland comes at a cost. but maybe it's not so bad after all.
⤷ author's note: not even halfway through finals and i caved to ryland grace propaganda. enjoy.
"rylahand, i'm sohorry-" your own hysterical giggling cut you off, and he laughs, very pointedly at you.
"i'm so doing this every time you're being a little twerp." his nails are still trailing around your ears and your shoulders shrug up, despite not deterring him at all.
this was equilibrium.
the hem of your burgundy sweater fell in between ryland grace's fingers, where they rubbed numbly across the twisting patterns of the fabric, his prints leaving behind a shade of pink on your cheeks.
he was doing it mindlessly, of course, blue pupils swimming across his work. you observed, almost shamelessly. you knew him well enough to revel in his incredible work ethic, knowing he was too focused to notice.
his biceps twitched beneath his loose white tee with every molecular movement; thickened fingers wrapped around the knob of a microscope while the other brushed ever so slightly against the soft skin of your wrist.
you swallowed.
he withdrew his hand from you, adjusting the microscope further and you exhaled, ever so slightly. dirty blonde hair cascaded across his chiseled face and-
why the fuck is he looking at you like that?
"i can see you staring, you know."
a scoff escaped your mouth.
"i wasn't staring." you don't recognise your voice, high-pitched and defensive.
"uh-huh."
"i wasn't."
"right."
"i think you're losing it," you laugh.
something in your tone makes him spin around, wide eyes now penetrating you through his glasses. you see your timid reflection through the lenses, smaller than you would prefer.
"what did you just say to me?"
"can't hear?" you chortle at your own joke. "can't see? what's next, can't breathe? get it? 'cause we're in space?"
"very funny." sarcasm coats his voice. an unamused huff leaves his nose.
"are you sure you get it? i know it might be a bit confusing for you. maybe i should elaborate a little-"
one second you're hovering over his chair, all smug and teasing. the next, you find yourself backing away towards the wall as ryland towers over you, inching closer and closer.
"w-wait, what are you-"
he doesn't say a word, but his eyes hold a mischievous gleam that made you feel like hunted prey. his face widens into a teasing smile and you feel your cheeks burning.
"y'know, we haven't done this in a while," he states, running a hand through his locks.
your eyes flicks to his lifted bicep, just once, so fast that you don't think he even saw-
he laughs, the sound echoing across the room and you think, how the hell did you find yourself stuck in space with this asshole?
"shut up!" that comes out more a whine than an order.
your hands find themselves on your face, putting a stop to the intensely flustering eye contact. it also conceals your blushing, which somehow seems to have become a daily occurrence with ryland grace.
"aww, come on, don't hide!" he laments, his voice gravelly.
his hands find their usual spot on the sides of your stomach, squeezing and you shrink, uncoordinated, while your hands struggle to cover your face.
even after so many times, you never seem to get used to the unbearable feeling of fingers prodding up and down your torso, and you grab his large hands, already laughing.
"ry-rylahand!" the sound escapes from you like a deflating balloon.
"y-yehes?" he mocks, his fingers finding the divots of your hips and drilling.
you squeal, a string of incoherent syllables running out of your lips. your hands circle his wrists but he doesn't relent, experienced fingers seeking out every ticklish spot on your body.
"rylahand!"
"what's wrong, baby?" the teasing tilt in his voice sends shivers down your spine. you almost missed the pet name in your mirth. baby. maybe if you could process something other than the fingers pressing into the crevices of your ribs, scribbling up and down your sides, you would've screamed into a pillow.
"you're such an asASHHOHOLE!" your voice pitches up an octave when ryland wisps his nails across your ears, his face ducking down to meet your eyes.
"noho-" you've been in this scenario enough times to know what he's about to do. "noho, rylahand. plehehease."
the fluttery, soft feelings of his fingers across your neck left you giggling and confused, but it didn't do anything to stop the sense of impending doom.
"rylahand, i'm sohorry-" your own hysterical giggling cut you off, and he laughs, very pointedly at you.
"i'm so doing this every time you're being a little twerp." his nails are still trailing around your ears and your shoulders shrug up, despite not deterring him at all.
"you're so-" he stares down at you, and through your laughter-stained eyes, you see something more than pure evilness in his eyes.
"you're so pretty," he whispers and the blush once again coating your being is the last thing you feel before ryland grace's lips catches yours in a kiss.
you sigh into his mouth, his hand cradling the back of your head like a lifeline. his lips are gentle, soft. nothing short of passion and love in which they brush against yours haphazardly. his mouth trails kisses down your jaw to the skin of your neck and that's when- oh shit. oh shit.
your eyes widen.
you quickly realise you've made a grave mistake. you make an oath to never, ever let your guard down again but it's too late. you feel a soft hand cradle your head and you close your eyes in defeat, lips already twitching into a uncontrollable smile.
ryland shoves his face into your neck, the wrinkles of his lips and the slight blonde stubble coating his chin brushing against the hypersensitive skin of your neck.
and it tickles, it tickles so bad and you don't think anything has ever tickled so bad in your life until his other hand trails down your ribs and his thumb wrenches itself into the flesh.
whiny pleas and desperate laughter tumble out of you and you grip his hair, his hands, curling into a ball, anything, anything to get this son of a bitch to stop, but you're not sure if you really want him to. it felt nice, for once. to be touched by him. not by accident. with intention, despite how malicious it might be.
ryland eventually slows, his face nearing your vision before he places a gentle kiss on your forehead. you smile, albeit shyly, before meeting his eyes with a smirk.
"y'know, if you wanted to kiss me that badly, you could've just asked."

This was ridiculous.
You huffed in frustration, digging harder inside your pack, trying to go by feel alone. Were there really no more shirts in your supplies? How did they even decide to ration outfits for this mission, surely they'd give you more than the six or so shirts you've already gone through. Did they just not think of body odour in space?
You yanked your hand out and settled for a different aproach. Grabbing the underside of your pack, you lifted it up-side-down as high above your head as your arms could reach, and shook.
Various pieces of clothing tumbled out onto the floor.
Tossing the pack to the side unceremoniously, you dug your hands through socks, underwear, shorts, until your eyes spotted a rectangular piece of white fabric.
"Aha!" You said triumphantly and snatched the shirt up. You fumbled with it for a moment before turning it right side up, noticing the print on the front.
Your blood ran cold.
Both you and Ryland had been given tshirts with funny images, puns, and quirky designs. While his usually stuck to the theme of science puns, yours tended to be a little more on-the-nose-milennial with things like 'don't talk to me before I've had my coffee' printed on them. This one had bright pink text right in the middle, in large print that was impossible to miss. Just three simple words.
'TICKLE ME PINK'
You slammed your hands down, concealing the front of the shirt, and shot a panicked behind you to the latch leading to the lab. It was open, as you'd left it, but Ryland was nowhere to be seen. Turning back around, you lifted the shirt up just a little bit, as if to confirm the print was still there.
It was.
You buried your face in the fabric and leaned forward over your criss-crossed legs, groaning desperately.
Incoming rattling alerted you enough to straighten out your back.
"Human okay question?" Came Rocky's voice as he paused next to you.
"I'm fine, Rocky." You said with a slight sigh.
"Human make distressed noise. Why question?"
"I just realised I have one clean shirt left, is all." You deflected.
Rocky raised himself up a little. "Grace say he clean shirts. Ask Grace to teach how clean shirts!"
"Yeah, okay." You said, dread rising in your chest. "I will."
Making sure the front of the shirt is firmly hidden in your lap, you began gathering the rest of your clothing from the floor and shoving it back into your pack. You didn't have to hide the shirt with just Rocky here, it's not like he'd see what's on it. Or be able to read it. Would he? Suddenly you weren't so sure. He might ask to explain what the text says, knowing his curious nature. Yeah, better safe than sorry.
Ryland's voice carried through the Hail Mary, calling for Rocky, who quickly scampered to find him.
God. Ryland.
What the hell were you going to do about Ryland?
You knew for a fact that he would make a big deal out of it. He'd already been known to attack you, claiming it helped him destress, and he wasn't shy about how much he liked tickling. Not like you were. He'd never let you live it down. But what other choice did you have? Your other shirts were too dirty, and you didn't want to go around stinking up the place. For your own sake and Ryland's.
So how were you going to solve this?
You cast one more nervous look to the hatch behind you, then turned back around and peeled your dirty shirt off. Then, slowly, you pulled the clean one on, trying to ignore the heat rising up your neck. Clearing your throat nervously, you grabbed the sleeves of your jumpsuit that you had tied around your waist and tugged them tighter.
Wait.
The jumpsuit!
You just had to put the whole suit on, and the shirt would be concealed.
You untied the sleeves, and slipped your arms in, buttoning the front until the text was out of sight. Then buttoned extra two. Just to be safe.
You smoothed your palms over the front of your jumpsuit, taking a steadying breath, just as Ryland called your name across the ship.
"Coming!" You called back, kicking your pack into a corner to deal with later.
Things will be just fine, you reassured yourself.
@
Your plan worked perfectly. Ryland made no comment on your attire, and the two of you quickly settled into your familiar work routine.
Except it was hot on the Hail Mary, and your layers and long sleeves were not helping.
Ryland had dragged his stool next to you to look at the screen you had been working on. His leg pressed against yours, and his arm stretched in front of you to scroll through your notes and charts. This was normal. You've both abandoned any awkwardness around physical touch long ago. Being stuck in space on a one way mission will do that to you. Boundaries shift and warp when both people need comfort in sight of terror.
You tugged at the collar of your jumpsuit, then dug your fingers underneath that to reach the tshirt. You willed air to flow through your clothes but, of course, there was no breeze on a space ship. Ryland shot you a quick look.
"You okay?" He asked, eyes settling back on the screen in front of him.
"Peachy." You keep your eyes steady on the screen. Ryland lowered his hand and leaned it on the counter, but didn't move his arm away from you. He gave you a once-over.
"You're not too hot in that?" He didn't look suspicious. Just curious. Maybe a little worried. You shrugged noncomitally.
"Hey, does this look weird to you?" You asked, pointing to a particular number. Ryland's eyes snapped back to the screen, and he frowned.
"Could have sworn that was…" He muttered to himself, and clicked through the screen to bring up a spreadsheet. His attention successfully diverted, you let yourself exhale quietly in relief. You stayed sitting for a long few minutes, watching carefully as Ryland clicked through notes and spreadsheets, trying to figure out his train of thought. When he shifted away from you to grab a spare piece of paper and pen, you took it as an opening to escape for a few moments. It was better to leave Ryland to do his equations in peace. Let him come to you when he figured everything out.
You climbed back through the hatch leading from the lab to the sleeping quarters, and immediately unbuttoned your jumpsuit. You peeled the long sleeves off your body and waved your arms back and forth to cool off. You could have sworn it didn't used to be this hot on the ship. Maybe you were just freaking yourself out, and it was making you overheat.
Yeah, that sounded about right.
You sat heavily on one of the beds, resting your elbows on your knees and placing your head in your hands. You just had to make it till dinner. When you're both out of work mode, and eating, guards down, you can ask Ryland to show you how he cleaned his clothes. And then you will clean your shirts and hide this one somewhere no one will ever find it. Or better yet, throw it out the airlock. You drew in a deep breath and released it slowly, controlled. This was a good plan. You could avoid embarrassment.
"So, you were right, those numbers are weird, so I ran through some equations and it looks like there's some kind of an anomaly within the Petrova Line-" Your head snapped up at Ryland's voice entering the sleeping quarters and - to your unfortunate luck - he looked up from his sheet of paper at the exact same time.
There was a beat.
Then your brain caught up to you and you crossed your arms over your torso in a frail attempt to conceal the writing from Ryland.
His eyes flickered to your arms, then snapped back to your face, but he remained where he was in the doorway. Your heartbeat thudded in your ears.
"Whatcha got there?" Ryland asked lightly. You didn't trust his tone.
"Hm? No, nothing- " you cleared your throat nervously, trying to play it cool "- what about the Petrova Line?"
"Yeah," Ryland said after a moment. "There's been a sudden change in how the astrophage is behaving- what's up with your shirt?"
"My shirt?" Heat crawled up your neck. "Nothing's wrong with my shirt - why would anything be wrong with my shirt?" Yeah, real cool and suave. You winced internally.
"…uh-huh." Ryland watched you for a moment longer. He lowered his hand, papers rustling loudly against his thigh. "And you're hiding, why?"
"I'm not hiding! This is just…comfortable." You trailed off lamely.
"Yeah, and you're not a bad liar, either." Ryland was grinning now, which made you even more nervous. He stepped fully into the room and up to the bed you were sitting on. He placed his papers on the mattress next to you, then turned his full attention on you.
That was not a good thing.
"Come on, out with it." He placed his hands on his hips.
"The shirt is…" You trailed your eyes off to the side, looking directly through the diamond shape that Ryland's arm made as it rested on his hip. You could just barely see a sock spilling from your pack where you had disgarded it earlier. "…stupid."
"That clears it up." Ryland said, not unkindly. You huffed and closed your eyes.
"It's embarrassing."
"You know I won't judge you." Ryland's voice softened.
"No, you won't." You said. "That's not what I'm worried about."
"What are you worried about?"
You kept your eyes closed. Not looking at him made it easier to speak. "Don't make me say it."
"Okay, now I'm actually worried." Ryland's hands came to rest on your shoulders, solid, warm, and steady. You let your head drop back.
"This is so duuumb." You groaned pathetically.
"I can't help if I don't know what's going on."
You opened your eyes. Ryland looked worried. That made you feel worse.
"Fine." You said. "But you're not allowed to laugh." Ryland nodded easily, still watching you carefully. Ignoring the heat in your face and your racing heart, you dropped your arms from the front of the shirt. Ryland looked down and his expression immediately changed. You only caught a glimpse of it before you turned your head away.
"Oh, I see." He was choking back laughter.
"You're not supposed to laugh." You complained.
"Sorry, sorry." He rubbed your shoulders comfortingly. "Your ears are really red, by the way."
"Rylaaaaand." You groaned, folding in on yourself. The top of your head pressed against Ryland's stomach where he stood in front of you. His hands shifted easily to accommodate your movements, one moving to the back of your head. He sounded entirely too happy, still attempting to hold in his laughter.
"Are you going to come out from there?" He asked once he composed himself.
"Depends." You muttered into your lap. "Are you done making fun of me?"
"Hey." Ryland gave a few pats on your head, signalling you to sit up. You did so, begrudgingly. "I'd never make fun of you." You nodded, chewing on the inside of your cheek.
"I'm surprised you didn't just take one of Ilyukhina's shirts." Ryland added, grinning impishly.
"Oh my god." You rubbed at your eyebrow, mortified. "I can't believe I didn't think of that."
"Better for me that you didn't." He said, scribbling his fingers on the back of your neck. You scrunched your shoulders up instinctively, hand shooting out to grasp his wrist.
"Hey, wait!" You pulled his hand away. He let you, watching you with exaggerated patience. "We have an anomaly in the Petrova Line, we don't have time for-Hey!"
Ryland's hands found purchase on your upper ribs, fingers wriggling in between the spaces of your bones.
"Oh yeah," He said as you started giggling. "This is a good spot, I think I'll hang out here for a while."
You tried to pry his hands off, and when that didn't work, you moved to pushing at his shoulders.
"Tell me something," Ryland continued, unphased by your shoving. "Did you ask for this shirt to be put on the Hail Mary?"
"What- no!" You choked out.
"It's just interesting, don't you think? That you'd get a shirt with tickling on it, I mean - given that you love this. Interesting coincidence."
"Grace, please."
"Oh, it's 'Grace' now, is it?"
"Stop - talking -" You forced yourself to say, attempting to twist away from his offending hands. Ryland was on you in a flash, pushing your body until your side was pressed into the mattress. He braced a leg on the bed, crowding you in.
"Shit shit shit!" You hissed when his hand started squeezing along your side.
"Language!" Ryland scolded, his voice taking on that specific Teacher Tone he undoubtedly used on rowdy teenagers. His other hand came up to the side of your neck and ear, scribling lightly. Your laughter kicked up a notch.
"I-" You struggled to speak. "I bet that-"
"What is it?" You could hear the grin in Ryland's voice, but he didn't slow his hands. You curled in on yourself and turned towards the mattress in an attempt to protect your stomach, and wrapped your arms around your middle.
"I can't hear what you're saying if you're trying to crawl inside the mattress." Ryland chuckled somewhere above you. He slowed his hands to gentle tracing, and you took in a gulp of air. You moved your head to rest your cheek against the mattress, trying to catch your breath.
"I bet that Rocky swears all the time." You shot Ryland a look. "We just can't tell because it's all in Eridian."
"Huh." Ryland paused. Clearly the thought hadn't occured to him before. You watched him for a moment longer, calculating the precise moment his brain kicked into theory high gear. When you spotted it, you launched yourself off the bed.
"Hey!"
You didn't wait to see if Ryland followed you. If you ran fast enough you could make it to the comms and lock the door behind you. Hopefully. You'd need to override Ryland's access first. But you were better at the controls than him.
Rocky startled away from his work as you stumbled into the lab.
"What wrong, question?" He asked, tone rising in alarm.
"Can't talk, gotta run!" You called to him, barrelling through the lab to the next hatch. You were almost there, you just had to make it up the deck.
A pair of arms caught you just as your hands brushed against the doorway. Ryland hauled you back, one arm over the front of your shoulders, the other wrapping around your middle and immediately back to squeezing at your side.
"Where are you off in a rush to?" Ryland asked. Instinctively, you tried to bend foward to protect yourself, but his arm held you up against his chest.
"Nohowhere!" You clutched at his forearm.
"Nowhere? You sure you weren't going to lock me out of the comms?" He asked.
Damn it.
"How did you knohow?" You tried kicking your leg to get out of his grip. You were unsuccessful.
"Human having fun time, question?" Rocky's voice interrupted whatever Ryland was going to say next. For better or worse, Rocky was used to the two of you behaving like this. Ryland had made sure to be very thorough in explaining tickling to Rocky, the first time the Eridian had witnessed this scenario.
"Oh yeah, you bet they are." Ryland answered for you. You tried another kick. Ryland adjusted his hold on you and lowered his hand to squeeze your hip. You yelped, and felt Ryland laugh against your back.
"Why human run if this is fun time, question?" Right, yeah, Rocky didn't understand everything.
"It's part of the fun." Ryland was speaking, ignoring your protests. "It raises excitement and anticipation, and that in turn makes the person more sensitive."
Okay. You couldn't listen to this.
"Truce, truce, truce!" You gasped out, smacking Ryland in the forearm repeatedly. He stopped, loosening his arms just enough to make sure you had your footing. You lowered yourself to the ground, bracing your palms against the floor.
"You okay?" Ryland asked from above. You shot him a look, making him chuckle. "Yeah, you're fine." He reached down to ruffle your hair lightly, and wandered off to the lab table.
Rocky rolled over to you.
"Can breathe okay, question?"
"Yeah," You were still a little breathless. "I can breathe, don't worry."
"Had fun, question?"
You hesitated, then nodded your head. Rocky gave a thumbs up at your affirmative. You did a thumbs up back.
When you looked over at Ryland sitting at the lab table, he seemed to be smiling a little too widely. You ignored the flip in your stomach.
"Are you finally going to tell me about that anomaly?" You asked, trying to play it cool, as you got to your feet. Ryland waved you over, and tilted the screen towards you when you got to the lab table. You leaned forward a little, focused on absorbing as much of the information as possible. Your maths was solid, but not as quick as Ryland's. The web had just begun to untangle in your brain when Ryland spoke up.
"You should wear that tshirt more often."
Your brain stuttered to a stop, head snapping to the side. He was looking at you over his glasses from his perch on the stool. A smile played at the corners of his mouth.
"Uh." You cleared your throat. Looked back at the screen. "I'll think about it."
Request: “the reader is playing country songs to piss off ryland and he tickles them to get them to stop (it’s what they wanted anyways LOL)” from @mystey-here who somehow managed to give me a prompt that was so up my lane that it felt like it had been plucked directly out of my brain. Thank you!

A/N: No shade to country music, I come in peace. If you have a prompt in, I will be working on it soon!
It had started off unintentionally, perhaps innocent even. It was a few songs to remind you of home, and the fun times that you’d all shared in the compound before the Hail Mary had taken off.
Ryland, Rocky, and you always listened to music in the lab. Stratt had outdone herself in terms of how much media had been sent with the four of you. The catalogue went back as far as the 1860’s, and up until the very day that the ship had taken off. If you were to play through all of it, you would probably never hear the same song twice for the entire journey from Tauceti to Erid. If you combined that with Rocky’s ability to literally create notes that your and Ryland’s human ears couldn’t hear, then you truly had nearly endless possibilities.
That morning, when you and Ryland had woken up, you were the first in the lab, so you were the one who got to pick the music for the day. By the time that Ryland climbed the ladder after you, the classic tunes of Johnny Cash filled his ears.
He looked up at you with his brows raised.
You held his stare across the stark white lab. “What?”
“Country music?” he asked, looking tired.
You shrugged. You hadn’t even realized that you’d never played any songs in that genre before, and you couldn’t tell if Ryland was just confused or annoyed. Once you all had gotten into the habit of listening to stuff while you worked, the three of you established the rule that none of you could complain about what music was picked. You were a perfectly good spacemate, never saying anything, even when Ryland played all sorts of questionable things. You’d even let it slide when he’d played baby shark once when he was drunk, saying it was because his kids would make him listen to it ‘ironically.’
“It’s my turn for controls, is it not?” you said, arching a brow.
“My students would’ve called this old people music,” he said with a chortle, almost in disbelief.
“That's because we’re,” you gestured between the two of you, “old to them.”
He shrugged and moved out of the doorway and Rocky came rolling up after him. “No. Humans very young. Eridians grow old, humans are babies.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Ryland shrugged him off, heading to his work station. “Hopefully, you have better music tastes than us to show for it.”
You narrowed your eyes, catching his not so subtle insult. “Ryland, are you complaining about my music choices?”
He held one of his hands up in mock surrender, the other one still holding his coffee. “Of course not, I know the classroom rules,” he said, leaving you to continue fidgeting with your devices, but your mind was elsewhere now, a sneaky smile beginning to play on your lips. You had been working on a gadget, it was a special musical device that would allow you to press the buttons like a piano in order to make Eridian noises and communicate in their language. Since you were now bounding through the depths of space towards Erid instead of Earth, you figured it was probably best to start working on your communication skills, however, it seemed that perhaps the tool could wait a little while for you to try a different sort of experiment.
Rocky rolled by you, heading for the station that was on your right side, and you took that moment to hiss at him. “Rock-” you whispered.
Sensing that you needed him for something more urgent than usual, he rolled over quickly towards your side. “Friend whispering, why? Question?”
“I have a joke we can play on Ryland.”
“Tell Rocky. Rocky will determine if idea is good.”
You fondly rolled your eyes. Of course the engineer was going to want to inspect your plan first. “Well, you know how our music rule works, right?”
Rocky’s carapace shifted up and down like he was nodding at you. “Yes. You are in control. Grace is not. Rocky does not understand why any of this is important so assume is human thing.”
You clucked your tongue, forgetting that Rocky focused so much on what he was doing in the lab that he often zoned all other noise out. You supposed it made sense. Their language was basically composed of melodies and vibrations, so human music probably just sounded like weird overlapping conversations to him. “Right, so, if Ryland complains about the music then he’s in violation of the rule.”
Rocky spoke softer, as if Ryland was suddenly listening in. “What happen if rule broken? Question?”
You frowned, considering his words. “We actually didn’t decide.” You looked over at Ryland, who was now immersed in what he was doing. “I guess that means that I get to decide what sort of prize I want, right?”
“This makes sense to Rocky,” he agreed, tapping his foot on the floor. “But how does friend get Grace to break?”
At this, your brows furrowed. It would be difficult, but you were sure you could push his buttons far enough for this to work. “Even a teacher’s patience can only go so far, right?”
Rocky rolled away slightly, even his computer voice sounding slightly shaky. “Friend is evil. Rocky see now why they put humans to sleep for journey.”
You brushed off his concerns with a short huff of air through your nose. “Relax, he’s not going to kill me.”
Rocky was already moving away, back towards his station, like he didn’t want to be infected by the energy in yours. “Rocky will watch. Rocky will see.”
His words almost made you reconsider your plan, but then you looked over at Ryland peacefully putting the Taumoeba boxes away and decided you simply couldn’t allow him any peace. Later, you could blame it on the boredom of space, or how you had hit a wall with your language device, but for now all of your attention turned towards irritating your friend.
You switched from Johnny Cash to Tim McGraw, another American country classic, and nothing that would throw Ryland off too much. You saw him bite his lip for a second as you made the switch, but he made no other movements, not even so much as an ill contented sigh. It was odd, how Ryland knew this was out of character for you, but he was still choosing not to comment on it. You gnawed on your lip, wondering how long it could truly take to irritate him. It was no doubt that he was the most patient one on the Hail Mary but his inaction was making you question how far he would go.
You pulled out a drawer in your station and grabbed a notebook and a pen. You flipped it open and scribbled at the top, “Ryland’s annoyance capacity, Test One.” You wrote about your first change in music and his barely visible reaction and then went back to sort of paying attention to your actual project. You needed to wait a little bit in order to up the ante. Ryland was patient, but he wasn’t an idiot. If you kept changing the song every five minutes, he would start to grow suspicious and then your experiment would be rendered null and void.
You waited a solid ten minutes to walk back to the main computer in your setup, adjusting the music to that of Florida Georgia Line, a more modern country group with funny nods to their redneck roots but nothing too obscure. You picked one of their more popular songs to start with and cued up a few more before going back to your ‘work’.
You quietly uncapped your blue pen and tucked your hair behind your ear. Ryland stopped his work for a moment when the song came on. You couldn’t see his face, but he went completely still, just staring at the wall in front of him. It took everything in you to push your laugh down, picturing him with his face screwed up in confusion. Then, as if the matter were settled, he went back to his work. You waited a minute to see if he would do anything else, but after another five more minutes, the boredom started to gnaw at you and you wanted to work on something. You wrote down his reactions in your notes, then turned towards Rocky, giving him one of your keys to test out. The Eridian piano would only prove to be useful if the Eridians could understand it so you ran everything by Rocky before it was implemented. You began to become so engaged in the work, that you almost didn’t notice Ryland calling your name.
“What?” you said, breaking your intense gaze away from Rocky’s fidgeting with your other experiment and turned back towards your human subject.
“I asked who made this song,” he said with a warm smile and a look in his eyes that felt almost too knowing.
“Oh,” you said, feeling the heat rush to your cheeks. You rolled towards your computer in order to have time to recover. “The music station says this is Florida Georgia Line.”
“Oh, okay,” Ryland said with a shrug.
Ryland quickly turned back around, getting back to his work like he had never even asked the question in the first place. You couldn’t help but pester him a little more, just to see if you could get to him. “Is that all you wanted?”
“Yep!” he said cheerily, even popping the P emphatically.
You spun around on your stool to widen your eyes at Rocky and he just shook his head at you. He was becoming more accustomed to human tendencies by the day, and you were pretty sure that you had just been given the disapproving stare of a parent without him having eyes.
Still, you wouldn’t be deterred so easily. Ryland had to have a breaking point, you and Rocky did, so he had to have one too. You just needed to find it. You marked his question in your notebook as well as the time and then set to finding more impossibly silly country music in the database.
You quickly switched to one of Luke Bryan’s earlier albums, moving further into the newer and more unhinged country songs. In your defense, the songs were catchy, and they had a good beat, even if they were mostly about trucks, beer, and women in jean shorts.
You played the album out of order, starting Ryland off a little lighter and then progressively seeing how much he would take. The first song he had no reaction to, you weren’t even sure he’d noticed if you’d switched artists, the second and third song he continued working through, and by the fourth you knew you needed to pull out the lead single.
You pressed play on the opening track, and watched as Ryland furrowed his brows. He placed his hands down on the counter, abandoning the test tube that had been in his hand in the sink. You saw him look up at the speakers then look over at you.
“Isn’t this heavily sexualizing women?”
“Huh?” you asked, looking up from your notebook like you hadn’t just been staring at him just a second ago.
Ryland waved his hands around. “This song and the way he talks about women, I mean I know it’s probably at least a decade old, but isn’t it all a bit misogynistic?”
“Oh,” you said, looking up at the speakers as if you’d just noticed they were playing. “I guess I hadn’t really been listening to the lyrics, I just like the beat,” you lied, knowing that this particular song would set Ryland off. He wasn’t wrong, most country songs were that way when you’d left Earth, but at least they were giving you something to annoy him with. You bit your pen, sensing your opening. “Do you want me to change it?”
Ryland was already turning back towards his vile in the sink. “Nope, was just asking,” he said calmly, but you could see the tightness in his shoulders. You were starting to get to him.
You pivoted slightly, shifting back to the classics and putting on Margaritaville, and watched as Ryland slumped as if he had gotten hit by a middle school insult. You laughed to yourself at the sight of Ryland putting his head in his hands, very clearly fighting to keep his thoughts to himself.
You decided to up your game, adding any songs that included anything close to the words honky tonk or used tractor and sexy in the same metaphor. It was at this point that Ryland fully abandoned his work, instead just sitting on his stool, looking completely dumbfounded. Luckily for you, he seemed to be refusing to look up at you, making it much easier to cover the way you were snickering at him.
With him already down, you decided to go for the kill and you put on Parked Out By The Lake, and waited for Ryland to realize what you’d done. For a moment, he seemed to almost recover what you’d put him through. At first, it seemed to him like the song wasn’t that bad, but by the fourth or fifth line he started to catch on. The song was repeating the same five words over and over again, just in slightly different ways.
You watched as the usually fidgety man grew more and more still, and you furiously scribbled in your notebook, looking over at your stopwatch every few seconds. Halfway through the song, Ryland finally looked up at you.
“This is the worst song I have ever heard,” he said, deadpanning.
Your jaw dropped far more dramatically than what was necessary. “Did you just insult my music?”
You managed to hold back your laughter but Ryland’s eyes narrowed on you. The lab suddenly felt hotter than it had a minute ago and you felt yourself flush at his intense eye contact. It felt as though he was looking right through you, like he could see to the very deepest point of your soul, and knew exactly what you were doing. You jerked your head away and slowly inhaled through your nose, willing your face to cool.
“What?” you asked, praying to any nearby stars that you were keeping your face intact.
He held a finger up. “Wait a second.”
He stood up from his stool and began to walk through his station. Your breath caught in your throat as he drew closer to you, stopping just at the edge of your table and placing his hands on his hips.
He leaned in towards you. “You’re trying to do this.”
You shrugged, your heart hammering in your chest. “Do what?”
Suddenly Ryland was moving towards you, hands reaching out to grab, and you no longer cared for keeping your little act in play. You didn’t know what he was planning on doing when he caught you, but you weren’t going to stick around to find out.
You scrambled to somehow move away, scurrying towards Rocky’s station as if he would protect you. Unfortunately, with you out of the way, Ryland reached out and grabbed your notebook instead of grabbing you.
“Shit,” you muttered under your breath. His eyes flicked down to the notepad and you stood frozen as he silently read the words that would no doubt seal your doomed fate. He looked over the top of his glasses at you as he dropped the paper back on the table and you instinctively took a step back.
“I was your science experiment?” He asked, and if the look he was giving you wasn’t scaring you then the way that he sounded nearly amused certainly was.
You held your hands up in surrender. “Observation is the sincerest form of flattery?”
Ryland dropped the notebook and took after you. You yelped and jumped over Rocky. “Ryland wahahahait!” you laughed, nervous laughter being pulled from you as you realized he was just behind you. You didn’t even know where you were headed. You were technically going in the direction of the bedroom, though you truthfully had no idea how this was going to help you.
Your feet pounded across the ship, and you willed your socked feet not to slip against the ground. A bubbly feeling of anxious tension was rising in your stomach, making you feel as though you were already caught despite the fact that you were still running away from him.
You grabbed a hold of the bedroom door just as Ryland’s arms snaked around your middle. “No!!” you yelled, smacking at his arms, a random assortment of words tumbling out of your lips. “You are the one in violation of the music rules! I should not be the one in trouble here!”
Ryland clucked his tongue. “Oh, you negated your music rule the moment you started using me as a little experiment.”
Ryan gently threw you onto the small makeshift couch that the three of you had set up for when one of you got too tired to climb down from the lab to the bedroom. You squeaked with surprise as you bounced on top of the plush pillows, surprised with the ease that he tossed you with.
“Now,” he said, standing over top of you and essentially cornering you in with his body. “What are we going to do with you?”
You pushed yourself backwards as if you could fade into the wall. “Nothing,” you pleaded, your voice wobbling with uncontained giggles. You weren’t used to seeing him like this and the smarmy way he was looking down at you was making you all too nervous. “You’re gonna let me go.”
Rocky rolled over with a speed that you’d never seen him use outside of dire situations. He pulled at Ryland’s shirt. “𝀌᭴᭵♮᭢᭨᭫᭮”
“Ohhhhhhh,” Ryland said, and then looked at you with the biggest smirk. You looked between him and Rocky trying to determine what was going on. The translator hadn’t turned on, but Ryland clearly knew what Rocky was saying. You started to feel more nervous laughter bubbling up in your throat.
“Will it work on them?” he asked, holding his hand over his mouth as if you couldn’t hear what he was saying.
Rocky nodded his head. “It worked day before last. Rocky tried just like Grace asked. Friend made big noise. Was very cute. Statement.”
You frowned, trying to figure out what Rocky was talking about, but coming up blank. The days on the Hail Mary started to blend together at certain points, but this seemed big enough to Rocky that you felt like you should be able to recall it too. Then, all of sudden you remembered when Rocky had accidentally jabbed you in the side as you had just barely been waking up. You had screeched and giggled as he continued digging his claw into your side for a few more moments, your mind not even awake enough to try fighting him.
Now, however, you were awake and suddenly aware that that moment had been significantly less spontaneous than you’d realized. As you looked up at Ryland leering above you with a smile, you realized that you hadn’t needed to push his buttons to provide yourself with entertainment. He was bored too, and now you’d just given him the perfect excuse to screw with you.
Ryland already knew you were ticklish, thanks to Rocky the traitor, but you couldn’t just let him win.
You sprung from your position against the wall, and slipped around Ryland’s legs, attempting to crawl towards the edge of the makeshift couch. Already giggling furiously, you managed to place a steady foot back on the ground before two hands jabbed your sides, just above your hip bones, and your legs involuntarily gave out.
You fell backwards onto the plush pillows, and looked up to find Ryland who was smiling down at you like he’d just discovered a new star. As you scrambled towards the wall a second time, it started to dawn on you that you might’ve finally found the point that your mild mannered friend turned into a mischievous planner, and your heart started to hammer in your chest.
“No, no,” you said, as Ryland came to sit down beside you. “Hold on, we can talk about this. We’re all very reasonable people.”
“Correct. We’re all scientists, and now I want to run an experiment of my own.”
You swallowed hard, wrapping your arms around your middle and pulling your knees up. This didn’t seem like this could possibly end well for you or your overly sensitive skin. “Which is?”
He cocked his head. “We’re going to see how much of the tickle monster you can take till you apologize.”
He started to wiggle his fingers towards your stomach and you jolted on instinct. “NO!” you yelled.
“Ohhh, very interesting, a ticklish stomach it seems.” Ryland turned around. “Rocky, can you keep notes for me since my hands are a little busy right now?”
Rocky chirped and ran to grab your notebook and pen. “Of course. Friend very ticklish. Make very squeaky noise even when fake tickles.”
“Rocky! Be quiet!” you yelled, somehow feeling even warmer.
“What?” Ryland said, cooing sweetly at you. “Are you feeling too perceived right now?”
“Shut up,” you whined, but then his hands were shooting towards your neck and you screeched without him even touching you.
“Rocky, can you please add that our test subject seems to somehow get even more sensitive when teased?”
You covered your face with your hands in favor of protecting your middle. “I don’t know how to deal with you like this.”
Ryland laughed. “Like what?”
“Like,” you risked a glance outside of your hands, only to find him looking at you like he was prepared to lovingly destroy you within an inch of your life. “Like that!” you said, unable to find anything else.
“Oh, can someone dish it out, but they can’t take it?” he asked, raising a brow.
You frowned at this, sensing that he was very close to feeling like he was winning. “No, I’m just not used to it.”
“Oh, well I suppose we better test that theory then, huh?” Ryland said, shooting a hand out to your side that you effectively blocked.
“Uh uh, none of that.” He hooked his arms under your legs, and pulled them out, sending you sprawling across the cushions.
“No, NO, give them back!” you yelled, trying to scurry back into your curled up position, but Ryland was already climbing on top of your hips, pinning you in place.
“No.” Ryland gently trailed his hands across your arms, it didn’t tickle, but it was enough to send goosebumps across your skin. “We have to finish my experiment.”
He leaned in close to you and whispered. “And the tickle monster can’t conclude his hypothesis without some giggles to prove it.” Ryland then began to wiggle his fingers into your neck and you screeched as your shoulders practically came up to your ears.
“Ryland!” you yelled, squeezing your eyes shut against the horribly ticklish sensation.
“Nope. Tickle monster needs laughter, not your friend's name.”
Indignation hit you like a ton of bricks despite the fact that your unpinned hands were doing very little to fight him off. “You are NOT the tickle monster. We are too old for this!”
“Ooh, tickle monster did not like that answer,” Ryland reached down and squeezed your hips and a bright burst of laughter exploded through you. His thumbs found the divot point in the bone, and you threw yourself forward in shock, only to have Ryland gently push you back down. “Are you trying to invalidate my experiment?”
“Fuhuuhhuhuhuck yohohohohu!” you yelled, your body twisting around wildly in an attempt to dislodge that ticklish feeling from your skin.
“You are so lucky that the tickle monster is here instead of your amazing friend Ryland because he’d probably do this for saying that word,” he said, before grabbing a hold of your wrists and pushing them up to leave your middle unprotected. Before you could process what he was doing or scream, he was bending down to blow a raspberry on your stomach. You screeched as the vibration travelled through you like magic. His scraggly beard was like tiny individual feathers across your sensitive skin and you swore he was moving it around as much as possible.
He sat back up and swiped his fingers across your tummy.
“Rocky, please note that our subject is especially susceptible to raspberries, though we’ll have to try it other places to confirm this theory.”
Rocky chirped and you heaved in enough of a breath to speak. “We are NOT doing that.”
Ryland looked down at you, looking as innocent as the devil. “Why not?”
Your jaw dropped at his audacity for even asking you that. “Because, because- YOU are the one who broke the music complaint rule.”
Ryland threw his hands up with a laugh. “You don’t care about the music rule.”
“You don’t know that,” you breathed out heavily.
Ryland cocked his head. “I have a different hypothesis, do you want to hear it?”
“What?” you said, raising your brows.
He poked your shoulder. “I think you would’ve picked this as your compensation for me breaking the rule.”
You weren’t aware that your face could get any warmer. “I would NOT”
Ryland leaned back, looking smug. “Okay, then apologize for your experiment and I’ll let you go right now.”
You glared at him. It wasn’t like you were craving the feeling of his fingers sending that zappy tingly feeling through your nerves, or the playful energy that was currently buzzing around the inside of the Hail Mary, but you simply couldn’t give him the satisfaction of letting him win that easily. “I won’t apologize for being a thorough scientist.”
Ryland twisted around to yell over his shoulder. “Rocky, please note down that its possible our test subject likes being tickled but we need more proof before our conclusion.”
You would’ve pushed him if you still had your hands. “Ryland, stop teasing!”
“Sorry, I can't help you. Ryland isn’t here, if you need something you’ll have to address the tickle monster,” he said, before clawing his fingers into your armpits. You yelped and kicked, and then descended back into laughter as your skin twitched underneath his careful hands.
He was nearly methodical in his methods, alternating between softly stroking the skin, spidering his fingernails, and scratching at your hollows. “Subject seems to be more susceptible to lighter softer touches, but we will have to try elsewhere to be sure it isn’t a fluke,” he said, and you heard Rocky chirping behind him before his words started to make sense to you.
“Try ribs, usually ticklish for humans,” Rocky suggested, and you tried to pull your arms down to no avail.
“Good idea Rock, I almost forgot about those.”
“Bad idea, no bAD IDEA!” you tried to say, but then Ryland’s hands were softly scritching across your sides again, taking his sweet time in wiggling his fingers across each bone. He alternated between each side, making you lean into one of his hands, only to change which hand was doing the tickling.
“Grace!” you pleaded, descending into the madness of your giggles.
“I might listen if you call me by my real name, you know,” he said, letting his hands trail down to your stomach. You nearly shot up out of your skin, but all Ryland had to do was squeeze your sides again, and you went right back down.
His hands went right back to your stomach and it felt like your nerves and your face was on fire. His hands twitched just above your belly button making your laughter turn deeper as you tried to suck your stomach in to no avail and you squeezed your eyes shut. The sensation ran deep, like the feeling of his hands was spreading hazy warm waves through your body and the laughter was all heading straight to your brain.
“Switch spohohohohts!” you begged, needing him to be anywhere else other than your stomach.
“Hey Rock, can you write down that it appears that our test subject would rather deal with what appears to be their worst spot being picked apart than say the word tickle?”
You opened your eyes to gape at him, but promptly wished you hadn’t as he looked down at you in mock sympathy.
“Yes. Does appear to be stubborn when solution is so obvious. Rocky think friend too flustered to say word.”
“You bohohohohoth SUCK!” you yelled, wishing you could give both of your mischievous crewmates a withering glare, but laughing too much to even be able to speak properly.
Ryland smiled down at you. “If you want me to switch spots then you’ll have to ask the tickle monster.”
You were never going to live this down, but you were going to explode if he kept raking his fingers against the soft skin of your middle. “Tihihi- tihihih,” you started, then got too flustered to finish. Ryland squeezed your sides again and you yelped loudly. “Tihihihckle mohohohonster, please!”
“Interesting that you said that and not the words that stop this,” Ryland murmured plenty loud enough for you and Rocky to hear it as his hands fluttered at the sides of your neck once more.
“Rocky, do you think we have enough information to present our conclusion?”
“Not enough data. Friend is fine. Must keep going.”
“Friend is NOT fine,” you yelped, as Ryland accidentally brushed his fingers across the shell of your ear.
“Your ears are ticklish too?” Ryland all but yelled.
“Yours are wOHOHOHORSE!” you laugh screeched as he swirled his fingers around your ear and his nails scuttled across your neck. You tried to push your ear into the pillows but that just left the other side exposed, leaving you in a never ending search for a place where Ryland’s tickles could not reach you.
“Maybe so,” Ryland said, flushing a little red, but smirking too much for your liking. “But I’m not the one screaming.”
“I’m not screa-NO!” you had started to say into a pillow only to have a pair of lips press into the sensitive skin of your neck and blow as hard as possible. You shrieked loudly enough that it would’ve been embarrassing if you were with anyone else, but instead you just happily giggled yourself silly.
Ryland pulled back and you heaved in air as he gently brushed your hair out of the way. “Anytime you want to admit that you shouldn’t have experimented on Ryland I’m happy to hear it.”
You did your best to glare up at him. “You are so mean!”
Ryland shrugged and blew another raspberry on your neck, wiggling his face around and pressing that horribly ticklish stubble into your skin. “FINE!” you shrieked. “Ryland, I’m sohohohohry!”
He raised his head from your neck. “And what do you have to say to me?”
You inhaled a breath, willing yourself to be able to say the word again. You opened your mouth to say it right as Ryland bent down again, his lips connected with your neck and a gutteral scream came out instead. The vibrations were toying with your nerves and it broke down any walls you had left.
“Tickle monster PLEASE! I give!” you yelled, and Ryland pulled back,
“That’ll work,” he smiled, and you inhaled air like you chugged water on a hot day.
“You’re evil,” you looked up at him through your eyelashes. “I always thought you were too nice, but underneath those sweaters and kindness is an evil, evil man.”
Rocky scittered towards you. “Ryland not evil. Friend is lying. Had fun. Statement.”
You looked at Rocky in horror but Ryland only laughed and got off of your legs. He curled his hand under your knee and you jolted, but he only moved you around so your back was against his chest, his arms pulling the two of you close. You settled into him easily and Rocky pressed in beside you, tucking into Ryland’s side, “Rocky has a point you know, you never told me to stop.” he whispered in your ear.
“Shut up,” you hissed, resituating yourself overtop of his legs.
He laughed good naturedly, but Rocky shifted beside him. “Grace also seems happier now. Less bored.”
At these words Grace actually blushed, and his reaction hit you like a ton of bricks. He had said all of those things about how easily you were teased and yet he was being just as bashful about what had just happened. You smiled, realizing you weren’t the only one who had fun but wouldn’t admit it.
Rocky made a clicking noise. “We did two tests. What are conclusions? Question?”
You looked up at Ryland as he tilted his head side to side. “Subject is clearly unbearably ticklish-” you tried to reach your hand up to cover Ryland’s mouth, but he only grabbed a hold of your hands and held them to your chest like he was hugging you.
“The tester had a little bit too much fun tormenting me I think!” you pointed out, and though Ryland’s blush deepened, he pressed on.
“But between a combination of sheer obstinance and holding a secret enjoyment for the game, was able to hold out for a long time.” You wiggled around, trying to break out of Ryland’s hold but between his strength and your exhaustion you were stuck being forced to listen to his teasing words or come up with your own.
“You had more fun than me,” you said, your voice rising in pitch.
Ryland raised a brow, the look you were sure he’d given dozens of students before. “Is this you admitting you had fun?”
You let your head slump forward. “Shush-” you groan.
Ryland laughs and Rocky chirps.
“You look sleepy,” Ryland coos, looking down at you.
You nuzzle your head into Ryland’s side. “I’m gonna get you back so bad.”
Ryland begins to stroke your hair, and if it was possible, you can almost feel the heat of his smile on you. “I have no doubts.”
Your eyes began to flutter shut. “Rocky and I are gonna team up and it’ll be over for you.”
As if in response, Rocky curls around you, the warmth of his carapace making you feel so cozy and safe and Ryland murmurs contentedly. “Mhmm, I’m sure.”
You yawn loudly and curl your fingers into Ryland’s soft sweater.
“Friend sleep. I watch. We attack Grace later.”
You nod and you begin to drift off as you listen to the Hail Mary quietly humming around you, as if the sounds of your laughter are still echoing through the air. The journey to Erid still felt long and unending as it was laid out ahead of you but with the presence of your two best friends beside you, even the vastness of space felt warm.

🌌Synopsis
Grace messes up an experiment. You are never going to let him live it down, but he's intent on destroying all evidence, and isn't afraid to be childish about it. Fortunately, neither are you.
(Based on this ask and this ask)
🌌Author's notes
holy shit this one turned out longer than expected. I have no idea how I feel about it but i'm at the point where I think i should post it and be done <3 enjoy ig!
(thank you to @//harringtonsslvt for inspiring me to upgrade my post layouts!!! Space dividers by @//strangergraphics)
This is unbelievable.
You can't keep the grin off of your face. It's been a long long day in the lab for you...but it's clearly been a longer one for Grace. You've just found evidence of him making a mistake - one he swore up and down that he had never made, and would never make.
Your hands skim over the plastic lid of the electrophoresis tray in awe. The exact science here is irrelevant; the important thing is that someone has inserted the wires into the tray the wrong way around, causing all of the sample to scoot merrily off the gel intended to hold it.
"From black to red or your gel is dead, they drilled it into me in undergrad-" He'd always say, tutting when you asked him for the umpteenth time to check your own gels. It was more out of paranoia than anything - sometimes these things could take hours to set up. Grace had always been happy to help, always adamant that he'd never done it the wrong way around, despite it practically being a rite of passage for every molecular biologist.
And here it was: his time had finally come, one PhD and a suicide mission later.
"Oh, Maryyy~" You make sure the onboard camera is pointing at you.
Ryland lifts his head from the laptop at your tone, bemused.
"...What is it? ...wait, why are you grinning like that-"
"Maaarry, start recording, I need to keep this for posterity-"
"Recording started."
Grace's eyes dart from your face to the camera on the wall, and then down to the bench. The cogs turn for a second - and then, horror.
"No."
You nod.
"No, no, nope-" He stalks over. You lean back to let him see the complete absence of stained DNA on the gel. There's a pause as he stares, dumbfounded. You notice a slight twitch in one of his hands, and you instantly know what he's about to do.
He lunges to cover the evidence. Fortunately, you're faster- you step in front, blocking his reach but not the camera's view of his handiwork.
"MARY, STOP RECORDING- DO NOT-" Grace splutters, shoving at your shoulders. You shift the equipment further towards the wall, and start calmly extracting the gel from its equipment. If you suspend it in the appropriate buffer, maybe you can preserve it in a jar...as a reminder. The ship could do with some more decorating. Your brain runs through the practicalities of keeping agarose gels long-term.
Ryland, meanwhile, runs through every PG-13 insult known to man.
"Fudging - give it BACK, you JERK-" He swats at your arms. Ignoring this tantrum, you lovingly place the gel onto some tissue to dry off, and turn to face him. It is important that you see the look on his face for this.
"And behind us, dear viewers, you will see clear evidence that Doctor Ryland Grace, 33.33% of humanity's last hope, does not know how to load a gel-"
"Ohoho, you're in for it now-"
He redoubles his efforts, trying to stretch over you so he can bin the evidence. In your peripheral vision, you spot Rocky enter the room with an amused trill. He has probably heard the conversation and wishes to have a clearer view of whatever comes next. Better make sure the spectacle continues, then.
"-despite repeatedly claiming that he would never make such a silly mistake-" You press on, cackling at the frustrated noise your lecture draws out of Grace.
"Grace makes silly mistake all the time. It is no surprise he has done this."
"Correct, Rocky - Hey, Ryland! Don't destroy the evidence, I need to frame it!"
Grace ignores you - he's not going to stop until he's snatched that gel from its little tissue paper bed. You won't tolerate that.
He reaches over again, still failing to cover the distance. This is an easy opening; an opportunity to match his energy that you can't refuse.
Without a second thought, you dart your hand under his outstretched arm, and wiggle your fingers.
Ryland folds, shrinking away with a screech.
You laugh at the wounded look on his face. He glares.
"Okay, that's it-"
What happens next is a bit of a blur - you know that Ryland makes one last scramble for the gel, and you know that Mary starts her usual spiel about conflict de-escalation, and you know that Rocky scuttles over, shouting something about not wanting anyone to get hurt. You don't really hear much of it though, because immediately after blocking Grace's lunge, he resorts to vibrating his fingers into your ribcage. Your hands reach out to retaliate, and both of you fall to the floor in an undignified pile of giggles and swearing.
"Let me hahave this!" You protest, trying not to reward Grace with a reaction as he trails his fingers over your tummy. He's sat over your legs, torso within easy reach - you take your chance, and squeeze at his stomach in return. You're immediately rewarded with a wide grin and an abundance of cackles.
"You lihittle-BUGGER-" Grace has folded over above you, making it even easier for you to keep tickling. You draw circles around his navel that make him go limp with laughter.
"I'm glad we're recording this, you're being adorable," You tease.
"MARY! MARY-!" He shrieks, hands struggling to keep prodding your sides. "DELEHETE RECORDING- NOHO-"
"Dohon't listen to him, Mary," You speak calmly over Grace, shifting one hand to tickle his ears and grinning when he becomes conflicted over which spot he should be defending. "In fact, make three backups."
"Backup in progress," She chirps.
Ryland is too far gone to do anything about this - you snort at the way he's blushing, trying to hide his face in your neck, and- oh no.
...He's not hiding.
The sound of him taking in a deep breath, paired with the light brush of his stubble, is the only warning you have for the horrific raspberry Ryland blows against your neck.
It's awful - the sensation completely shortcircuits your brain, your arms turning to jelly as all your body can do is scream it tickles it tickles it tickles. You don't even have the wherewithal to moderate your reactions, loud belly laughter flowing into the lab before you can think to tamper it. Somehow, you've managed to keep tickling Grace, which is... not helping, actually, because he keeps laughing through the raspberry. Which tickles more.
"Oh no no no. This is bad for you." Rocky observes, ever helpful.
Then, finally - it's over. Ryland has to take a breath. You move as fast as you can, rolling out from under him to trap him in a hug. With no time to waste, you return the favour, leaning in and blowing a raspberry of your own.
"WAITwaitwait-" He squeals, then wheezes, then giggles. It's incredibly endearing.
"Nope!" You pull away, hands squeezing at his sides. Grace scrambles to get up off the floor, and you follow, backing him against the counter. He shoots you a nervous grin, and you don't give him time to do anything more than that - you crawl your hands upwards, to his highest ribs, and wriggle in the space between the bones. Grace leans forwards, head resting on your shoulder as he laughs, the occasional snort punctuating his high-pitched wheezing.
And then, like clockwork, the revenge arrives - through his laughter, Ryland's hands creep over your torso, scritching gently at your sides. Soon, both of you are doubled over against the other, fighting to gain the upper hand.
"Ha- I'm keeping that gel!"
"You are NOHOT!"
"I absolutely am!" You're about to explain why, too, when Grace shoves his hands under your arms, and you start sinking down.
"Rocky think you are losing. Grace making you laugh a lot. Keeping gel is...unlikely."
Well, isn't that nice?
"He's right, you know. Gihive it up and I'll go easier on you. Maybe." The smug tone in Grace's voice makes you renew your efforts out of spite, fingers finding purchase on his sides. It's not enough, though - you both return to the floor, and Ryland swiftly pins your arms above your head.
"Rocky, Rohocky help-" You kick out your legs and shoot him a pleading look.
"No, Rocky not help. Last time Rocky help, Grace figured out Eridian tickling. Is too high risk."
Grace chuckles at that, and gives Rocky a warning look. "Wise decision, bud."
He turns back to face you, a glint in his eyes that makes your stomach flip in anticipation.
"Now, I'm gonna count to five, and if you agree to never speak of this again, I won't tickle you. Sound good?"
You shake your head.
"Fuck you."
It goes very, very quiet.
Okay, maybe that wasn't the smartest idea.
Ryland traces a lazy path over your stomach that makes your breath hitch, and leans in, muttering a single word.
"Language."
All hell breaks loose. His hands poke and prod and squeeze erratically over your torso, each touch designed to gauge your reaction before moving onto the next spot.
"Ha-Ryland- no!" Through your hysterics, you can see him logging the way his movements make you squirm.
He doesn't stop - rather, decides to make things worse. "Why, does it tickle?"
Oh god.
"Shut UP, you PRICK-" Swearing has done wonders for you so far. Surely more is the answer here.
"Ohoho, you've gone so red," He chuckles, thumb drilling into your second rib. "Don't like when I say that, huh?"
You are rapidly losing your ability to speak, and there's a growing warmth on your cheeks that you suspect is a blush.
"Alright, so we know this tickles," He murmers, breath tickling your ear. His hand moves higher, under your arm.
"Doesss this tickle?"
You blindly nod your head yes, hoping he'll move spots. Instead, he changes tact, his touch becoming lighter. Your laugh becomes a lot squeakier.
"I can't hear you," He grins. "Does it tickle?"
"I'm-" You grit your teeth. "I'm going to kill you-"
The laughter he's drawing from you is out of control, and just forming those words takes monumental resolve.
Grace doesn't have any issues talking, though - content with the shade of red he's turned you, he switches to providing a running commentary.
"And here, dear viewers," He smirks, scribbling over a spot near your hips that makes your back arch, "You will see clear evidence that the other 33.33% of humanity's last hope is hopelessly ticklish."
"Grahace! GRACE!" You yelp, using your feet to try and slide backwards along the floor. Ryland follows, of course, highly amused by the theatrics.
"Yeah?" He grins, slowing slightly.
You try to wipe the smile from your face, but it's stuck firm.
"I cahan't-"
"Can't what? Can't talk? I noticed." He lets your hands go, probably out of pity, but walks two fingers over your stomach just to keep you guessing. It's enough to keep you giggling in anticipation.
"Okay, okay, you win-" You gasp, trying to sit up and shuffle away.
"Oh, I do, do I? Thank you for pointing that out." Grace laughs, adjusting his glasses, which have nearly fallen off in the scuffle. He takes pity on you though, and offers a hand to help you up.
"Whatever. Mary, delete recording," You mutter, taking the offered assistance.
"Recording deleted."
"Appreciated," Ryland gives you a cordial nod, heading over to the bench.
"...Wait, where's the gel?"
"...Humans were taking too long fighting. Got bored."
"Rocky-"
"Grace pipetting technique bad bad bad. Gel punctured in several areas." Rocky holds up the agarose, which is now housed in a beautiful xenonite case. He's even had the time to fill it with the appropriate solution. Maybe you did take too long.
"Oh, for goodness' sake-" Ryland puts his head in his hands. "Fine, keep it. But we are never talking about this again."
"Don't need to. We keep next to gel area. Reminder."
"Excellent idea," You grin, still holding onto a nearby table for support.
"From now on," Grace points at you, "I'm not checking your gels for you."
"Good, I mean...You can't exactly be trusted anymore, can you?"
He raises his eyebrow at you. It's a challenge, daring you to say another word. His fingers twitch, almost imperceptibly. The message is loud and clear: Do you really want to do this again?
Alright, maybe not today. You'll give it a few days before teasing Ryland about it.
After all, you never deleted the backup videos. You'll be needing those.

hii! for ler!ryland grace and lee!reader im thinking maybe rocky overheard a conversation about tickling and got curious about it, so ryland simply demonstrates using the reader and while he’s tickling them, he’s verbally explaining in a scientific manner to rocky whats happening. if you don’t like that idea i have tons more and can’t wait to see what you write!!
-🧸
Hi bear anon!!! I love that idea but @dcczero2 made something very similar to that and did a much better job at that prompt than I ever could. If you want to read theirs you can find it here. I am so sorry to dissapoint but if you’d like to send another request then I would be happy to take it!
Synopsis: There are many things infinitely more interesting than troubleshooting DNA purification. It's no wonder you take the first opportunity to do something else when Grace provides you with a convenient distraction. Based on this request and this headcanon
A/n: heyyy sorry this took so long, I'm having an exhausting week, but trust I am writing these as fast as I can, love you all dearly <3 hope this is alright, I really struggled to conclude it gracefully (haha).
"Augh- Ryland!" You scrunch up your shoulders, and glare at Grace, who has snuck up behind you and run his finger up the back of your neck as a greeting. He's recently discovered you're ticklish, and thus has thus been treating you like some kind of giggly stress ball.
Grace ignores your protest, and pulls up a chair next to you, glancing at the lab notebooks strewn everywhere.
"How's it going over here?"
"Not bad, thanks to your amazing work." You motion to the many calculations he's helped you with on the whiteboard - predictions for various aspects of the Taumoeba's metabolism. It involves a lot of diagrams and balancing a lot of equations. He flushes a little, muttering something about it being "just undergrad level". One of these days, you'll get him to just take a fucking compliment. Alas, today is not that day.
You turn to face the workbench, where several test tube racks are shoved behind your laptop, which in turn holds a lot of depressing readouts from the spectrophotometer.
"Having a little trouble with some stubborn protein contaminants. Look at this."
You point at your screen. Ryland squints, clearly unable to parse the tiny font from his lab stool. You roll your eyes.
"Ugh. Come here-" You grab his glasses from where they're hanging by his chin, and start sliding them into place. It's such a thoughtless gesture that you're already turning to continue your explanation before they're fully on.
Except you're interrupted by a giggle.
You turn back around, glancing at your hands, which still hold his glasses...but Ryland is no longer attached to them. He's shrunk back, a small grin tugging at his lips, one hand covering his ear.
"Surely not..." You mutter. "Don't tell me your ears are ticklish."
"I...won't tell you that, then." He murmers, which is a confession in itself.
He knows this. You can see him thinking it through, the same way you are. A second passes, and the two of you lock eyes.
...He bolts. Predictable.
You give chase, scrambling after him down the corridor as he starts shouting platitudes over his shoulder.
"Listen, hey, we don't have to do this-"
"We absolutely do!"
"Nope! Not happening!" He careens around a corner, nearly tripping over his own feet. By the time you catch up, the corridor appears empty. Perhaps he's gone into a side room.
Of course. The door to the wellness room is slightly open. You hold your breath, and sneak towards the entrance, pulling yourself against the wall so he can't see you coming.
One...two...three.
You throw open the door, and sure enough, Ryland is hiding on the other side. He shrieks, but it's too late. He's backed himself into a corner.
"uh oh."
"Hiding was a silly idea."
"Worth a try, though-"
"You aren't very good at it."
"Ok, let me try again, then?" Grace gives you his best puppy eyes. You almost cave, but think back to the number of times he's ignored your own pleading looks in these situations.
"Hm," you grin, swiftly tackling him to the floor. "Nah."
"Waitwaitwait-" He tries to shuffle backwards on his elbows, but you sit over his legs. knees pinning his hands in place. You've wasted enough time; you reach out as fast as you can, and swipe one finger over the shell of his ear.
It's immediately obvious why Ryland ran across the ship to avoid this.
"AHA- Nooooo! nonoNO-" He screeches, shoulders hunching up. His hands break free; they come up and try to block you, but you pin them out of the way again.
"I can't believe you kept this from me. After everything you put me through!" You convey your utter betrayal by fanning your fingers out behind his ear, swirling random patterns over the skin. Grace breaks into frantic giggles, his neck rapidly turning an adorable shade of red.
"Pleasepleaseplease-ahaha-It tickles!"
"Good."
"I'll- I'll do anythihing! Whatever you wahant! Just, please- MERCY" Grace cackles, snorting when you lean in to blow a gentle breeze onto his ear.
"Hm," you mutter, giving him a break so he can hear you talking. "...Anything? Let me think."
He's still giggling, the blush having spread up his neck to his face. Of course, he could have fought you off if he wanted to - you're acutely aware of the fact he's stronger than you. Something to tease him about later, perhaps. Your fingers trail over his sides as you keep thinking.
"I need something you'll hate..."
"I'll promise not to tickle you anymore- that's -aha- that's what this is about, right?"
You pause. This is dangerous territory. You'd never minded it, but he'd never stop teasing you if you openly admitted that. The best tactic is probably to change the subject.
"Excuse me, I'm the one deciding here." You return to his ear again, ever-so-lightly scratching around the helix, and he falls back into hysterics. "I could...make you do all the laundry for a month."
"Yehes- sure, fine!"
"...Nah, you agreed to that too quick."
You decide to give his ears a break, instead snaking your hands under his shirt to squeeze at his tummy. It sends him into absolute fits. A wide, carefree smile lights up his face, and his hands, having broken free a second time, clutch at his hair like he can't decide what to do with them. It puts a smile on your face too, seeing him like this. He doesn't laugh often enough - not genuinely, anyway. Neither of you do.
And then the idea hits you.
"Oh, I know what you'll hate."
Ryland goes still despite the fact you haven't stopped tickling - like he knows what's coming next.
"I want you..." You grin, drumming your fingers over his sides in a way that makes his breath catch, "...to tell me what a great scientist you are."
Grace gives you a look of utter dread.
"That's ridiculous," He huffs. "No one says that about themselves."
"And you won't accept it coming from someone else. So this will be a great step forward."
"When I get out, I'm going to tickle you so much-"
You don't let him finish; you immediately squeeze at his hips and watch the way he instinctively grabs at your wrists, never quite pushing you away.
"Are you gonna say it?"
"Noho!"
You scribble up his sides, and the pitch of his laughter slides higher again.
"Are you gonna say it?"
"NO!"
An evil idea occurs to you. "You have a nice laugh. You could admit that instead, if you'd prefer?"
"aha- screhew you!"
Your hands have reached his ribs, now. They poke gently at each one, and Ryland completely melts, covering his face and making a flustered sort of noise that's swiftly overtaken by helpless chuckles.
You slowly creep your fingers up higher and higher, watching as Grace gets increasingly embarrassed.
"Plehease, oh no, nono, that really tickles!"
He brings his arms down once you reach the top of his ribcage, head thrown back in near-silent laughter. Feeling a little sorry for him, you ease up, holding yourself still. However, it quickly becomes apparent that he's trapped your hands under his arms, and can't seem to stop making himself laugh, even though you've stopped moving.
"Oho- jeez-"
You give him an expectant look, flexing your fingers ever so slightly, sending him into more giggles.
"Ok, ok ok ok-" He babbles, adjusting his glasses. There's a moment of hesitation. "Uh...I'm... "
"...Yes?"
"I'm...a good scientist."
You retract your hands, satisfied. "Yes. You are."
Part of you wants to get him to say 'great' instead of 'good' - wants to keep that smile on his face for as long as possible. But, looking at him, you know he's giving you his best effort. You can see in his eyes that he's not ready for anything more than 'good'.
Something swirls uncomfortably in your chest with that knowledge.
If Grace notices the slight waver in your smile, he doesn't mention it. He's too busy propping himself up by the elbows, trying to wipe the silly grin off of his face.
You get up, and extend your hand towards his, trying to shake off the feeling. "Come on, you."
He swats your hand away with a pout. "No, I'm not talking to you right now."
There's absolutely no venom behind it.
"Ok, I guess the first ever Taumoeba WGS can wait, then. I'll make sure it's just my name on the paper."
He grins. "Oh, will you now?"
You lean against the wall. "Well, maybe I'll put you in the acknowledgements. Moral support, or whatever."
A moment of silence. He considers this. You consider the mischief creeping onto his face, and the way his fingers twitch ever so slightly; a barely noticeable motion that is definitely intended as a threat. He sees you notice, sees the cogs turning in your head.
i’ve always been a fidgety person—tapping on any surface despite not needing a clearer image, shuffling around when i ought to be standing still, tinkering on something unnecessary while having an unrelated conversation. i know this- everyone who has ever been in close proximity to me knows this; it's obvious if you pay attention to me for more than ∀ seconds. what i did not know was that aliens apparently also have this trait.
HELLO PHM TK FANS I HAVE ARRIVED behold the sillies‼️ they both get to ler and lee because i think rocky deserves to be taken down a peg in a fun way, and ryland needs to be Squeezed
i’ve always been a fidgety person—tapping on any surface despite not needing a clearer image, shuffling around when i ought to be standing still, tinkering on something unnecessary while having an unrelated conversation. i know this- everyone who has ever been in close proximity to me knows this; it's obvious if you pay attention to me for more than ∀ seconds. what i did not know was that aliens apparently also have this trait.
ryland's nervous energy manifests differently to mine, which i guess makes sense when you consider he has three less arms for activities, but it's obvious nonetheless—talking to himself when he’s in the middle of something that doesn’t require communication, constantly readjusting his clothing even after telling me he’s comfortable, vibrating his leg up and down if he’s sat down. it's nice to think that, despite the light years of distance between our two worlds and the complete incompatibility of our atmospheres and bodies, we really aren't all that different.
since i developed and began wearing the suit on a daily basis, our fidgeting has become more intermingled. mostly this means we're just tapping each other, but the thinness of the xenonite allows us both to feel textures that were previously unknown to us: my carapace and ryland's flesh. the squishiness of all that protects my friend from pathogens and wounds both unnerves me and intrigues me, but i suppose that he wouldn't be here if it were that inefficient. still, it's pretty gross.
apparently i have a morbid curiosity though, because the objectively disgusting feeling of ryland's skin moving under my claws is not enough to deter me from using him as a distraction item from time to time. like right now.
we're not talking much right now, both of us involved in our own entertainment, but the proximity made available by the suit is still novel and we are not about to waste an opportunity to cuddle, as ryland calls it. i idly rub my hand across the side of his abdomen while i listen to the drama i’m still not caught up on. seriously, how can i have been in space for years and still not have finished my podcast? ridiculous.
i reach the part of ryland's body where his ribcage ends and his skin is especially squishy. out of interest, i squeeze gently to feel just how much give it has, and ryland makes an alarmingly high pitched noise as he startles in his seat. we both freeze, staring at each other, until i ask, "what the fuck was that?"
"language." ryland says weakly, marking the page in his book and setting it to the side. the speed of his heart tells me he’s embarrassed, and my interest piques. "and, uh- human thing."
i do my best to mimic the human expression of being unimpressed. "you watch me eat. you can tell me what that was."
ryland nods weakly. "okay, i just- i’m ꕷ𐒅𝚋ݬ𐒅𝛤ဌ. um- it's when you touch someone lightly, and they laugh."
"humans can be ticklish?" i screech, standing bolt upright and not caring for how taken aback ryland looks. "how? you’re so soft!" without waiting for an answer, i squeeze ryland's abdomen again and he squirms in his seat, a nervous smile beginning to form. i try tapping at his skin, and the squirming continues. "interesting. humans need even lighter touch to be tickled."
"so how does it work for yOU- hehehey!" ryland starts to ask, when i try to test out scratching gently and he yelps before giggling. it's kind of adorable how he curls up in a poor excuse of a defence. "c'mon, i gotta- it's for science."
i sigh dramatically, because i was totally prepared to tickle ryland like i would an infant eridian, but i guess he has a point. "much harder motions, since we have harder skin. like this." i rub against his arm in what i would expect to be a sensitive manner, but of course, he just nods. "where are humans most sensitive? eridians have places that are more vulnerable; i assume you do too."
ryland narrows his eyes, and i can’t help but laugh. "you’re just trying to get me."
"not just." i wiggle my carapace teasingly, both amused and disgruntled that i’ve been found out so soon. "i'll tell you my places if you tell me yours." i concede.
ryland sighs, and i can already tell he’s gonna go through with it. "alright. for humans, it's here," he gestures at his lower torso—all the squishy bits "here," he holds up his arms and points at the pocket of skin beneath the joint. "and for some reason, here." he lifts his foot and pats the base of it.
that last one makes no sense to me. "you- don’t you walk on that? surely it should be less sensitive, so it would be less painful."
"hey, i didn't design it." ryland grins, and i guess that's true. "your turn."
"eridians are mostly ticklish here," i stretch out one of my legs to demonstrate. "here," i tap the top of my carapace, where the vents sit. "and here." i point at my mouth. "where the body is weakest, at joints and openings." i explain, because ryland looked confused. "can i tickle you now?"
blood rushes to ryland's face, and i suppose the phenomenon of being embarrassed about your sensitivity is not unique to erid. "i don't- hang on, i’ve not had a turn yet!" he folds his arms petulantly. i am again reminded of a baby, though i don’t say this aloud. "where are you most ticklish?"
i wasn't expecting this question, and i shift from leg to leg for a moment in flustered surprise before answering. ".. my vents. where are you?"
"my ල𐒅Էලဌ." ryland gestures to the lower middle of the squishy part of his torso, and i mentally catalogue the word. "for humans, you gotta be pretty light- like this." he taps his fingers against my carapace so gently, i can hardly feel it—though i suppose it wouldn’t be as barely-there if your skin is so soft.
"i think i was doing a good job." i say smugly, if only to hear the way ryland's heartbeat quickens. "it's kind of difficult not to tickle when i have to be so gentle on your weak sk♬♩♫-!" my words are quickly interrupted by a shriek as ryland darts forward and scrubs at my vents in an alarmingly ticklish manner for a human with such weak hands. i’m so surprised by the sensation that for a moment, i just flail around before i remember that i am considerably stronger than ryland and push him off. "rude!"
ryland, being the awful person that he is, just laughs at me. "that was so cute!" he grins, and i crumple down onto the floor dramatically. "you sounded like a cat."
"well you look like a baby." i retort, giving him a poke in the stomach for good measure. as expected, he squeaks and pulls away. "you’re a pebble. dumb, lanky, and dangerously squishy."
"and you are a ticklish rock." ryland teases, which is probably funnier if you’re a human; to me, this just seems obvious. annoyingly, it still makes me feel a little embarrassed. no- not embarrassed—flustered. "hey, do you guys ever get- like, cosmetic smoothing? like you’re getting polished?"
i tilt my carapace to the side. "yes. it's similar to human hair, since the skin grows back after time." a second later, i realise why he’s asking this question now. "oh- it can tickle, if that's what you mean."
ryland looks pleased. "i knew it."
for whatever reason, his smugness makes me all the more agitated and i scuttle a few metres back to finish my podcast. "i’m sitting here now." i declare. ryland laughs, but he doesn’t protest, and we resume our comfortable silence.

let this be very clear: i do not forget things. my memory is unusually good even among eridians, especially so when it's things i care about, so when i start idly tapping at ryland's ribs, it is not because i forgot about his sensitivity—it's because i think it's funny to watch him squirm. he assumes unconsciously that my memory must be similar to his (or maybe he’s just gotten used to me ignoring him completely sometimes and repeats everything he says for my benefit) and so his first instinct is not to complain about me being annoying, but to remind me. i can understand why he enjoyed teaching so much, to be honest.
"hey- rocky!" ryland wiggles particularly strongly as i move my poking closer to the flat of his stomach. it's a good distraction as any from the fact that his stomach didn’t used to be flat, and wouldn’t be if he had enough calorific intake, but there's not a lot either of us can do about that right now. "that tickles."
i make a show of gasping and putting a claw against my carapace like i’ve seen humans do in movies when they’re shocked. "really? you are ticklish? i can’t believe i forgot!" ryland gives me an unimpressed look, and i just continue my joke. "it's funny because i didn’t forget, and i never forget anything."
"alright, alright- sue me for giving you some grace." ryland scoffs, playful. i’m about to say something very funny about the 'grace' part of his comment, when he scratches hard at the leg i still have resting against his torso and i squeal unflatteringly as i scramble backwards. "i remembered that, didn't i?" he adds, clearly pleased with himself.
"you forget everything, and you still remembered that?" i mutter, shaking my leg out indignantly. "rude and disrespectful."
ryland grins, poking at my carapace teasingly. i know there's no way such light touch might tickle, but i find myself shying from his hands all the same with that familiar nervous excitement. "i mean, with that kind of attitude, you’re basically just asking for it now."
bizarrely, the idea kind of sounds nice. i straighten up in a mix of embarrassment and confusion at this thought, and ryland laughs. "that is not- i am doing- you are wrong and dumb." i settle on eventually, higher pitched than i usually am. "when did you last sleep?"
"uh uh, you can't pull that one on me again." ryland wiggles his fingers in my direction, and i suppress a squeak. why is this getting to me so much? "if you want me to stop, just say the word."
obviously my first instinct should be to tell him to stop, so i can go back to watching mamma mia with him and criticising the logistics of getting married at twenty human years. so- why is it that instead, i don't say anything of the sort? "i am not afraid of tickles." i say in a voice that completely undermines my statement.
this seems to be exactly what ryland wanted to hear, because he perks up even more. "i don’t know, you seem pretty nervous to me." he teases, fingers hovering just above my carapace. i squeak a little at the proximity, and he laughs, which does nothing to quell my embarrassment. "or are you just excited, hm?"
"you're seeing things." i say, focused entirely on how close his hands are to me—it feels like my insides are buzzing with the anticipation. "you need sleep. i watch."
"or, i could just do this." ryland begins scratching at my vents and i shriek in panic and excitement—which is a very strange combination of feelings, but i’m not really paying attention to that right now. instead i’m realising with horror just how much more ticklish the improved version of my suit makes everything now ryland's fingers can just glide across my carapace. "woah, that bad?"
"ye♬♪s!" i squeal, barely within ryland's hearing range. "it- ♩t fuck♫♬g t♩♫♪kles!" there's no way half of my words are making any sense whatsoever, but there's not a whole lot i can do about that when i feel like i’m about to explode. "♪♫♬♩!"
"that one wasn't even a word." ryland teases, not letting up on my fucking vents holy shit why are his stupid fleshy hands so ticklish? it's all i can do not to smack him in the face and sprint away. "c'mon, you can do better than that."
i do honestly try to say something (mostly insults), but all that comes out is a garbled stream of notes and laughter. listen, okay- it fucking tickles, and i have barely had any contact with another living being for decades, and my brain can't seem to decide whether i love this or need to escape right the fuck now. it's a lot!
ryland is entirely unsympathetic to my plight—just cooing at me like i’m a child. "uh oh, i think someone's ticklish! coochie-coo, rocky!" i don't think i've ever been more flustered in my life.
the worst part might just be that i know i can escape if i want- we both know i’m perfectly capable of pushing him off and getting out of there if i want to. so the fact that i’m still here, being tortured relentlessly by a big squishy alien is.. not a great look on me. although i have no idea why i’m so embarrassed about this; we are literally in space. there is no one else for lightyears that might be able to see us!
"this is adorable." ryland says fondly, beginning to slow down a little. i think i prefer this—still pleasantly unbearable, but not so much that it's all i can think about. "i can’t believe this never came up before."
"y♩ou are- you♬♪ abusing this." i complain, still laughing helplessly. weirdly, the lighter touches make it harder to keep still, and i find myself squirming despite my best efforts otherwise. "i w♩ill have rev♬♫nge."
ryland pokes me again, and i squeak even though i barely feel it. "yeah, i’m sure you will, buddy." it sounds sarcastic, but his nervous grin suggests he knows otherwise.
-
apparently there's a human saying that revenge is a dish best served cold. maybe this is true, in the sense of building up the anticipation would make ryland all the more tense and thus squeakier when i do eventually squeeze him to death, but i’m not nearly patient enough for that. another human phrase is cuteness aggression, which is when they find something so endearing that the brain doesn’t know what to do with the information and decides they need to kill it. when ryland first told me about this phenomenon, i thought it sounded ridiculous, but now i’m listening to his squishy body stumbling around and the way he laughs when he’s excited, and i definitely get it.
so technically, this doesn’t have to be counted as revenge and i can still serve it cold later on. right now, i need to squeeze this human until he metaphorically pops.
i pounce on him when he’s sat on his bed so i don't actually injure him, and he yelps in surprise. "rocky! jeez, dude, you nearly gave me a heart attack."
"i have a problem." i say, poking his cheek as i do. it's interesting to feel the softness of it compared to the ungiving bones of his teeth behind it, but mostly i’m doing it because i think it's sweet. he kinda looks like a ♫♩♬♫—an animal that doesn't have much of a tough exterior, since it lives mostly underground on erid and thus doesn't need protection against the atmosphere. "cuteness aggression is the problem."
ryland blinks at me for a second, and laughs, the blood rushing to his face in the way i know means he's embarrassed. "you think i’m cute?"
"yes, cute cute cute." i punctuate each word with a poke to each one of his cheeks, both amused and endeared by his reaction to all this. "i’ve done some research about how humans can help this feeling."
"i- alright." ryland grins shyly, and i shift a little so all my legs are free. "what is it?" i give his stomach a quick squeeze and he makes an adorably high pitched noise, eyes widening as he realises. "oh, come on. i’m not- that's not fair!"
i trill happily. "it's so fair. you make cute noises, and i want to hear them."
before ryland has the opportunity to complain all too eloquently, i begin to scribble at his stomach and he squeals, covering his face in his hands. "rock- rohohocky!"
"you’re like a little baby." i coo teasingly, tracing nonsensical patterns where his shirt has started riding up and ryland squirms uselessly. "cute cute cute."
"not fahahahair." ryland giggles helplessly, and i very politely don’t point out the fact that he could totally get away if he just asked me to get off. "ihihit tickles!"
i laugh because that seems pretty obvious to me, but maybe it's not as clear to humans. "yes, i’m doing it on purpose. tickle, tickle!" i tease, and ryland whines in embarrassment, beginning to push at my arm halfheartedly—i know his full strength, and this isn’t even close to half of it. "now, i’ve been doing research."
"how- hohohow much rehehesearch could yohou have dohohohone?" ryland complains, pulling his knees up seemingly unconsciously as i start to poke at his hips. i squeeze experimentally at where they meet his thighs, and he shrieks. "NOHOHO- not thehehehere!"
"you didn't tell me all the places humans can be ticklish." i wag a finger at him in mock-disapproval, mostly because he keeps doing it to me when i crash into something in my ball. "i told you the truth, and this is how you repay me? i don't even know if your worst spot is your stomach now, so i need to test."
i pull all my hands back, giving ryland room to breathe as he stares at me in playful horror. his heartrate has increased, but if the way he’s fighting a smile is anything to go by, it's excitement rather than fear. "you’re setting yourself up for a whole lot of revenge, buddy."
"it's for science! you love science." i wiggle my claws teasingly in the air, and ryland makes a very cute squeaky noise in response. "where should i start?"
when i don't do anything other than wait for a reply, ryland seems to realise i’m actually asking him. "where- you want me to tell you?" he gapes, as if i’ve just asked him to saw off his own leg.
"well, i could just figure it out myself." i say smugly, positioning my hands over his thighs and chirping in amusement when he twitches. "i’ve heard vibration can often be ticklish for humans, do you want me to test that too?"
"you- it- wait, is it?" some of the tension drains from ryland's body as his curiosity overrides his nerves, and i laugh. "shut up- i didn’t even know that." he grins, folding his arms.
i tilt my carapace to the side. "wanna see how it feels?"
ryland gestures to himself as if to say go ahead, and i begin to hum at a frequency too low for him to hear, but strong enough for it to rattle my body slightly; manipulating soundwaves is the most common way eridians tickle one another, but since ryland is incapable of doing anything similar, i didn’t think it was that important to mention. apparently i should have brought it up sooner, because the moment my carapace starts to vibrate on his stomach he gasps and claps a hand over his mouth to stifle his giggling—as if i can’t hear it regardless.
"so? does it tickle?" i ask. it's obvious this is sensitive for him, but i will never pass up an opportunity to tease my squishy friend.
he nods for a second, eyes squeezed shut, before he takes a breath and his laughter comes tumbling out. "yehehes! oh my gohohosh- sohohoho muhuhuhuch."
"good!" i begin to poke at his his chest and he squirms a little more underneath me. "where do i tickle next?"
"i cahahahahan't." ryland begs, which i guess is just an invitation for me to experiment on my own. after all, i don’t hear him saying no.
i laugh, squeezing gently at his ribs. he squeals, so i just have to keep going. "you can. i believe in you."
the testing lasts a while before ryland starts to flag, which allows me to learn that pretty much every part of him is ticklish. the worst places seem to be his stomach (at least that wasn't a lie), thighs, knees and ears (ears? that seems ridiculous to me- why should they even have nerves?), but i was able to get at least a giggle from anywhere i tried. as expected, he is utterly adorable in every second of my 'experiment'—curling up in a futile attempt at defence, wiggling around to release some of the nervous energy, occasionally smacking the ground when i find a particularly sensitive area—and it's all i can do not to squeeze him so hard it begins to hurt.
eventually though, his stamina is depleted, and he lays spreadeagled on the ship's floor while i pat his head; i don't know if this is helping him or not, but i like it, so- whatever. "you are disproportionately good at that."
"yes, i’m good at everything." i say smugly, happy to have brought my friend joy and proved my superiority at the same time—yet another point to rocky on the humans vs eridians scoreboard. "and you are very ticklish." i add, just to tease him a little more.
ryland scoffs, before reaching out and squeezing at my leg. i yelp in surprise and crumble to the ground as he doesn’t stop, a mischievous smile taking over his face. "oh yeah? it's just me?"
i squeal a series of words that are mostly just curses, and kick him off. he laughs at me and i huff dramatically. "you are.. also good at it. somewhat."
"point to ryland." he smirks, and i push him away for the sake of being petulant. which- okay, maybe i didn’t forget that he could use this to start tickling me again, and maybe i was doing it to goad him into retaliating. what do you care? we saved two planets, you don’t get to judge me.
A/N: Welcome to the result of all my Ryland Grace brainrot...I am so Normal about this guy you have no idea. I'd apologise for the cringe reader insert but that wouldn't be very whimsical of me. Enjoy.
(One day I will include Rocky - today is not that day, I have...no idea how to write him yet)
Synopsis: When you put two people on a cramped spaceship, they will inevitably have stupid arguments - you just never counted on Grace resorting to torture when we wants to win a debate.
Ryland Grace is a pain in the ass.
“Give it back!”
“Nope.” You hold his notepad and pen well out of reach. “I don’t know what time it is, but we both need sleep.”
“Then go to sleep!” He whines, grabbing for his supplies.
“I would, if they’d packed me any fucking earplugs on this tin can. You have zero spatial awareness when you’re researching! It’s loud!”
Ryland frowns at your swearing, but continues to snatch at your hands - you float above him slightly and hold your arms well out of his reach, grateful that a height difference doesn’t mean as much in zero-G.
“Five more minutes?”
“You said the exact same thing half an hour ago.”
He shrugs at this, and keeps trying to snatch his stuff back. Things quickly devolve into a childish wrestling match, both of you grabbing and slapping at the other.
“Give! It! Back!” Grace punctuates the words with three lunges towards the book. They all miss.
Somewhere in the midst of the flailing, he grabs your sides, trying to drag you closer. He doesn't miss the sudden flinch it causes, nor the poorly suppressed yelp.
Deathly silence falls over the pair of you.
Ryland narrows his eyes, calculating.
You school your expression into one of indifference as Grace starts smiling, and adjusts his glasses.
“Are you ticklish?” He's thrilled. This does not bode well for winning your little argument.
“No. Don't distract me.” It's the least convincing lie you've ever told. You hold the notebook higher in case he tries anything, and lament the telltale blush creeping up your neck. The human body is excellent at betraying itself.
Before you can react, he tickles you again, with intent this time, fingertips skittering above your hip.
A strangled squeak escapes. You instinctively reach down with your free arm and shove his wrist, eyes wide.
"Ohhh, you liar!" Ryland meets your gaze with a low laugh, and the look on his face makes you briefly consider running out the airlock. You're out of time to contemplate one-way exits though, as he promptly grabs onto your waist and starts squeezing.
“Grace! Don't-” You try to even out your breathing, not wanting to give him a reaction so easily. Laughter threatens to escape every time you try to speak.
“I’ll stop if you give me the notepad,” he states matter-of-factly, fingers creeping up to prod your ribs. It's getting harder and harder to hold your arm up, and he can tell.
“Ne...aha...Never!” You manage, giggles rapidly overtaking your ability to string together a sentence.
He sighs. “Alright then, you leave me no choice.”
With that, his hand moves under your arm, and it comes crashing down towards your chest. You're not ready to give up - you clutch the book close to your chest, both hands holding onto it for dear life.
Unfortunately, this makes it all the more difficult to stop Ryland from scribbling up and down your ribs in a way that drives you into utter hysterics.
“C’mon, I know you want to let go. Just let go. It’s so easy.” He worms a couple fingers under your arms, and laughs at the small shriek it causes. “Did that noise come out of you?”
“Please-!” You gasp, legs kicking uselessly. It's becoming apparent that tickle fights in zero G suck. Your instinctive squirming doesn’t do much without gravity to help you, so you're basically a sitting duck. Grace seems aware of this and takes full advantage, nudging you into a lying position to scribble over the sides of your stomach. He looks so damn smug that it makes you grip the notebook tighter out of spite.
“Oh, that's a good spot, isn't it? You go all squeaky when I do this.” The smirk on his face nearly kills you.
Good god. You're trapped on a spaceship with a sadist.
“Grace! Stop, mercy-” Your frantic laughter is punctuated with many embarrassing noises - a snort here, the occasional hiccup there. Ryland seems intent on cataloguing which areas draw these out, and it’s wearing your resolve very thin, very quickly. Luckily, he seems to sense this, and backs off to give you a breather.
“Mercy?” He hovers his hands near your torso. “Okay. Here’s what’s gonna happen. I’m gonna count to three, and if you don’t give me that notebook, you’re done for. Got it?”
You’re a little too busy gasping for air to process anything. There’s a stupid grin on your face that won’t go away, and whenever you breathe out, a bunch of giggles slip out too. It’s utterly humiliating.
“Two…” You must’ve missed the start of the countdown. Grace tilts his head at you, clearly surprised at your determination. He wriggles his fingers above your stomach, and that’s when you decide to give up. You shove the notepad at him in a panic, the thought of more tickling sending you into another laughing fit.
“Three- oh, thank you. There, was that so hard?”
You go to say something snarky in response, but it just comes out as an incoherent giggle. Grace chuckles.
“Ok, and what did we learn?”
You give him a rude gesture. He scowls and pokes you, which is enough to set you off again for a moment. Whilst you recover, he heads over to the desk to finish up whatever notes he was writing before.
After a second, he hesitates, and looks at you over his shoulder.
“And don’t you even think about tickling me. Won’t work.”
…Something in his voice betrays him. You may be a liar, but it takes one to know one.

authors notes: i read @/dcczero2's characterization of grace and something in me changed, please go check out his posts i promise you won't regret it. ive only read the book so far (im working up the courage to watch the movie) so thats what im basing grace on. side note; i was in fact giggling maniacally while writing this
///
