to me it's just kind of less interesting to give johnny an evil stepfather to explain why he's a bully rather than like, well he was in a position of power that allowed him to behave like that, and it gave him social currency, and it was enjoyable, and it was repeatedly reinforced as a good thing by the most influential figure in his life (kreese), and so he behaved like that. and it was something he was starting to grow out of already by the end of tkk1 and by the draft script version of tkk3 he was a different and better person which feels yeah like a realistic trajectory for a character. but of course then there would've been nothing to make cobra kai about. EXCEPT for my other, much more interesting idea: that he behaved like that because he was a repressed homosexual the entire time

karate kid is so refreshing cus like today’s teen movie protagonists are all misfits with emotional problems in some way, meanwhile daniel larusso is such a normal well adjusted polite and friendly guy whose life randomly gets interrupted by a repressed blonde psychopath and an adult man war vet who makes it his ultimate goal to physically and mentally destroy a random child

When you watch The Karate Kid, it's important to remember that the evil karate sensei canonically dies from yacht-explosion

on the topic of cobra kai and daniel larusso, the more i rewatch the show, specially the silver seasons (4,5,6) specially further season 5, the way daniel's storyline reads so much as an abuse survivor in where no one believes daniel that silver is a threat until silver hurts him again and people realize the danger. it's the way you can see how daniel's entire response to cobra kai is less about johnny being one of his high school bullies (which he thinks both of them were done and buried that hatchet), and more revolving around terry silver and all the events of the third movie.

he has such a visceral reaction to cobra kai and he snaps at even robby, who he knows is just a kid, but ptsd is not linear and in that moment he thought robby was part of it, alongisde johnny. but it's not until season 4 that we see daniel react and instinctly go back to miyagi do ways. it's his safe space, except miyagi is no longer there to help him and he is no longer a kid.

and further on the evidence of abuse survivor, the whole "you tortured me" "you know you liked it" and "all i had to do was wind you up" it clearly reads to me as that.
