Ok ok ok Iâve been thinking a lot about Jax and her character. Right after the finale I was super mad about how she took up almost all of the screen time and other characters were sidelined for her plot points. Iâm still very upset about this, especially because it caused us to miss out on so much lore about the circus. But anyways I was also upset about how they made the characters around Jax suck up to her and be endlessly kind to her while sheâs a total jerk. The fact that sheâs a jerk isnât the problem, I like her character actually, sheâs not a good person (no being trans doesnât give her a pass) but she has an interesting story and development throughout the show. But within trying to develope Jax goose sidelines ALL the other characters and uses them as props for Jaxâs storyline. So Iâm not saying Jax is a bad character, Iâm saying that goose ruins all of the other characers archâs by only focusing on Jax and watering down the cast to âthe people in Jaxâs life that interact with her and have nothing else going onâ
This sort of criticism only makes sense if you are under the assumption that the show is meant to do a certain thing.
It seems more to me that you expected the show to be about all the characters equally. And maybe if this was a TV show with 20 episodes, that would be the case.
But itâs pretty clear in hindsight that the real goal of the show was to explore the themes of finding purpose in a meaningless existence and what happens when you make someone feel unloved.
From THAT perspective Jax is a perfect antagonist. How do you show empathy and compassion to someone who is that abusive and toxic? We can see how Pomni affects all the other characters and helps them grow and become better people. But Jax continues to be a problem and she canât reach him until itâs too late.
So I get being angry you thought you were getting A but instead got B⌠but that doesnât make the show or the characters bad. Itâs not ruined, itâs just not what you were expecting. And thatâs okay.

re my "read books that make you feel stupid" post: reading books you don't fully understand is probably the safest way to push yourself outside your comfort zone. you don't have to embarrass yourself in front of anyone. you can do it from your cozy bed. you can easily get help from book clubs or literary analysis online. you can go as slowly as you want. there's literally no risk.
just saw a post talking about the misogynistic phenomenon of men frequently offloading household tasks to women & expecting us to do them... and describing it as "learned helplessness"
we are putting that term on the shelf
Learned helplessness is the behavior exhibited by a subject after enduring repeated aversive stimuli beyond their control. In humans, learned helplessness is related to the concept of self-efficacy, the individual's belief in their innate ability to achieve goals.
literal first paragraph of the wikipedia article for learned helplessness. this is a depression symptom. it is frequently caused by lifelong abuse from controlling authority figures. it is the exact OPPOSITE of an abuse tactic and would most likely be displayed by the WOMEN in that kind of scenario!!
the actual relevant term for what the man is doing is probably "weaponized incompetence" which is an abuse tactic. please for the love of fuck do not conflate the two
I love when someone is explaining instructions to a group Iâm in and they look at me and it reminds them to say something about using preferred names/pronouns or that thereâs vegan food options available. I go by my given name/pronouns and Iâm not vegan but Iâm proud that I can provide this service
we don't credit rebecca sugar enough for making the episode with the first gay wedding in a kids show extremely plot relevant so it could not be skipped or cut.
#rebecca sugar has gone on record saying that they knew from the beginning they wanted ruby and sapphire and they put every inch of planning#in to make sure that the studio could not take them out. sugar has said theyâd compromised on hundreds of things theyâd wanted for steven#so that they had the bargaining power specifically to keep ruby and sapphireâs relationship#and a number of âfillerâ episodes were created just to establish counter-arguments that might come up when they pitched the wedding episode#the one that comes to mind is the episode about steven and connie getting lost in roseâs room stevenâs central conflict about liking their#fave book seriesâ romantic ending was later weaponised when producerâs were like âoh but stevenâs a boy he wonât be too interested in them#getting marriedâ sugar was able to be like âno. in this episode itâs established he loves romance and specifically weddings. and in these#episodes itâs shown how much steven cares about ruby and sapphire and their relationship and happiness. you cannot convince me this is not#good and necessary plot development#and they wrapped it up in the season finale and the big climactic point of the diamonds finally coming to attack earth to make the#episode integral to the series no skipping it without confusion. and had ruby wear a wedding dress because international censors took#advantage of her design to give her a masculine va#and sugar made certain that everybody knew This was a queer love story that an entire town supported and admired and that any child watchin#it at home would know they are not alone and that that support is waiting for them out there somewhere#sugar sacrificed the wider story they wanted to tell for that and it was a horrible decision to be given but they made the right choice

Human beings are messy. And one of the things we donât talk about much is how damaging and harmful repression can look, both to the person being repressed and to the people that person lashes out at.
Jax is an interesting character because under better circumstances Jax couldâve become freer and happier and more in touch with himself. But because of the trauma and absolute SHAME that he felt, he lashed out and hurt multiple people in the process until his shame and self resentment swallowed him up too.
Thereâs this idea that when you transition or come out of the closet you just become a better person overnight. And thatâs not reality. It might be freeing and you might see more self acceptance in the immediate⌠but decades of deeply ingrained misogyny and shame doesnât just leave your body and mind in an instant. Itâs a constant struggle to do better and make changes, and not everyone who transitions or comes out is going to be a perfect little cinnamon roll. It might take years or even more decades to truly wipe that shame and resentment from your soul.
Thatâs why Jax is such a unique character. We donât often get to see this side of the queer community. We donât see how this toxic misogyny and self hatred can manifest in queer people and then be outwardly violent and misogynistic towards other queer people.
I think itâs important to see this, though. Because itâs a lot more common than you may think. And seeing it in a controlled safe environment like a story or indie show, helps you identify it in real life.
This doesnât mean we have to forgive Jaxâs behavior. Even the show itself says that abstracting is what Jax deserves for his toxic and shitty actions. But I think understanding the how and why queer people would hurt and lash out at other queer people is a really important thing to explore. Especially now as attacks on the queer community increase in real life and more queer people are shoved back into the closet and shamed for being who they are.
Fuck repression.
Whatâs really depressing is seeing how negatively the TADC community has responded to this extremely personal insight into Gooseâs past. Goose was vulnerable and showcased how toxic it is to be so deeply repressed. How messy and awful it is. And how it hurts other people around you.⌠And the communityâs response has been to demonize her and crucifer her for not being perfect.
Itâs like you guys are learning the wrong lesson.
Nobody is perfect. It takes a lot of effort and willpower to try to change and better yourself as a human being. We shouldnât be demonizing this and we should instead be trying to look at how this happens, and what we can do to build support for fellow queers who are going through something similar as Jax. The theme of the show is to give people grace and an opportunity to change.
I know thereâs probably plenty of reasons you can have to criticize Gooseworx, but I also canât help but feel like this sudden tidal wave of hatred is just another manufactured moralizing panic targeting at an openly trans individual who was brave enough to showcase some of the unpleasant aspects of their life in an indie show. Iâve known people like Jax in real life. And Iâve known those same people after theyâve transitioned too. Theyâre better people, but it still takes time acclimating them to be more open and accepting and to disinfect the toxicity theyâve lived their whole lives with. Itâs messy work.
Jax is what happens when you donât create a safe space for someone to grow. Leroy is what happens when you do.
thinking about all the times as a kid in a group project someone didnât want to do the work so theyâd go âugh i donât get it, i donât get any of thisâ and Iâd go âokay! what donât you understand and maybe i can help! đâ and theyâd look at me like iâm the idiot. anyway people still do this as an adult and there is no escape
My asshole son (Muffin the cat) has been on a diet, on account of him being overweight. I've been losing my fuck damned mind because he is not losing weight, even when sticking to the vet reccomended diet.
Found out that the dickhead (affectionate) has figured out that the food is in the utility room cupboard. He has figured out how to hook his claws into the door, pry it open, and get into the fucking cupboard at night, where he then shoves his head in the bag and eats as much as he wants.
He then exits and closes the fucking cupboard like the genius little goddamn prick he is.
Update; my fluffy 25 pound dickhead of a Maine coon mix Disapproves Strongly of the child locks on the food door. Loudly. Is now attempting to figure out how to work a child lock with his enormous crime paws.
Youâre completely correct. Out of my way, able-bodied losers. Fuck you.
