୭ৎ open to : anyone
‘ you look… different. good different. ’
❛ good different .. better, then ? less like the girl leaving you drunk voicemails at 2 am ? ❜ winces after she says it, regret hitting in the right place, like it's meant to after three years. ❛ i am sorry about that. i wasn't in my right mind ⸺ obviously. ❜
୭ৎ addressed to : @soundtrck
‘ did you lock yourself out again? ’
❛ oh, uh .. yeah. a little bit, yeah. ❜ she laughs, awkward and guilty. casts another scathing look at the door, then smiles at the other. ❛ i think i left my key inside .. again. ❜
minho looked up from the neatly organized stack of reports and ledgers on his desk , setting aside the fountain pen he'd been using . a soft cream cardigan hung over a simple and mono colored - black , button down , the sleeves pushed back neatly at his forearms , giving him a gentler appearance than most would expect from a man in his position . there was a quiet tiredness in his eyes from another long night spent looking after everyone else's problems before his own but it hadn't dulled the warmth in his expression . for a brief moment , he adjusted his glasses and glanced toward the door , already aware of the presence waiting outside before they'd even knocked . “ meryem , yes . do come in ” the mayor rose from his chair , crossing the room at an unhurried pace . “ here , may i ? ” voice was low and steady , carrying the familiar reassurance that had settled more than a few nerves over the years . with taught hands , he helped ease meryem's jacket from her shoulders before hanging it neatly by the door . only then did he return his attention to her , as though there was nowhere else he needed to be . “ it's nice to see you , what do i owe this pleasure to ? ”
when he rose, she steeled her muscles to not flinch away. it wasn't his fault ; nothing was overtly threatening about minho nam on the surface, but her heart still hasn't found its steady cadence from successive hyperventilations last night. in truth, her early hour presence owes less to elif's absence and more to the fact that she spent six hours lying on her bathroom floor, staring at the ceiling to regulate her breath, and only got to her feet an hour ago. she remains still as minho takes her jacket, her eyes lowered ⸺ maybe if he never finds her gaze, he won't see the wrongness that everyone else does. if she appears small, lifeless, he won't find cause to hunt. .. or she's overthinking it. she pulls her gaze back up to him, suddenly lacking the words to say. to confess ' i'm afraid ' is to shed armor in enemy territory. she has lived too stubbornly for that. but she doesn't know what else to say ; how else to explain coming here. ❛ .. am i safe here ? ❜ she finally asks. it's a wound exposed, but nothing that's new to him, she imagines. the truth of what she escaped was the price paid for refuge. will you allow me to live ? wants to ask, but it's too risky. acknowledging, fully, that her safety is in the hands of another man who could turn the town against her with the pluck of a string.
࣪ “ i was avoiding the headache, not the topic. i don't see why we even need to talk about it. can you not just say you're sorry and that you were stupid and move on ? ”
her callous dismissal of his feelings hurts worse than the inciting incident. not for the first time, he wonders why he's so stubborn in staying. ❛ no, ❜ he refuses, hurt bleeding into his tone. ❛ that's bullshit. i asked you if he'd be there ⸺ i told you i didn't want to go if he would, i tried to tell you that i was tired of seeing him hit on you. my walking out wasn't being stupid. and honestly, callie, fuck you for responding like that. ❜

࣪ “ i'm not scared, ” ( except he is ). but , you'd do that ? can you make them not hate me ? ”
❛ if i was going to risk them hating you, i'd have you do it yourself. ❜ words delivered with a light tone, though there is some level of sincerity to it. ❛ i'll make sure you come out of it as loved and innocent as a newborn. ❜ he studies the other with curious eyes. ❛ does it matter if they hate you afterwards, though ? ❜
junho stares at her for a second after stepping through the door , expression flattening immediately . “ what , were you taking attendance ? ” the door clicks shut behind him , shrugs off his coat without much ceremony . “ it's only been a few hours , not military deployment . try not to make it sound tragic ” the corner of his mouth twitches despite himself , gone as quickly as it appears . sets a bag down on the nearest surface without comment , leaving her to draw her own conclusions . by the time she'd inevitably notice it , he'd already helped himself to something from inside , dropping into a chair like he owns the place . “ don't look at me like that ” the admission never makes it to his mouth . it lingers instead in the small details - in the fact that he remembered what food prim liked , in the quiet certainty of choosing this over a hundred other things . an inconvenient sort of attentiveness , the kind that settles unnoticed beneath the skin and refuses to leave . if she looked surprised , he would simply pretended not to see it .
she locks the door after him, shutting out the risky fantasy of making a break for it. there's nowhere to escape to in a town owned by her captors. when she turns to him, there is food on the table : bakmi, a craving she complained about over a week ago. ❛ don't tell me how to look at you. ❜ a childish rejoinder, but she's yet to get stable footing around here. can't progress beyond half - hearted quips when there's every chance the person on the other end of it will press a barrel to her temple for the attitude. not that killer is the impression she's gotten from junho mercer. she shakes away her surprise and follows his lead, though she sits with more composure than he does. she looks at the food with hunger and suspicion both, though one readily eclipses the other and smooths itself into the cousin of gratitude. she reaches for the container that sits to the side for her, the scent of it teasing her nose deliciously. ❛ .. thank you. remembering my preferences is awfully thoughtful. is this the treatment your clients look forward to ? ❜
❛ i'm sorry for coming here so early. just .. elif's shift does not start for another hour. i thought this might be the best time to talk to you privately. .. is it ? ❜
* 。 𑁯 ֺ 𝒎𝒂𝒊𝒍 𝒕𝒐 ⨾ @litheelixir
elif is not the kind of woman who softens . she arrived into every room she has ever entered already decided - jaw set , shoulders squared , the whole architecture of her built for war and nothing kinder . she is the storm that comes too early and outstays the wreckage . people brace when she gets angry . they step back when she speaks . not from fear , exactly . moreso from the particular exhaustion of standing in the path of something that will not be redirected . she has turned entire rooms into battlegrounds by doing nothing more than deciding that she was the force to be reckoned with .
until meryem .
the thing about magnets is that they do not choose . the iron does not deliberate . there is no negotiation between the poles . only the ancient , indifferent pull of unlike things recognizing each other across the space between them . elif has known this about herself and meryem the way she knows the shape of her own hands - without having to look , without wanting to know , without being able to ignore . so when she takes her hand , every part of elif that has ever known how to perform herself rears up and readies . flare , she thinks . make it a scene . turn this into the argument it is . instead , though . . . she relocates . some quieter , more treacherous part of her simply moves . steps into the pull , lets the floor swallow the distance between them . the dance begins the way their silences always do - like a continuation of an argument neither of them are willing to have out loud . every step a sentence , every turn a rebuttal . every movement is precise in the way conflict becomes precise when it stops being public and starts being personal . there is only the music and the motion and the unbearable structure of two people who fit together like a wound and the thing that made it . “ there you are ” whispered , nothing beyond the proximity they share . . . singular hand increasing it's grip at meryem's hip . anger long stretched into something else entirely - curiousity , maybe . “ got you close enough , haven't i ? ” gaze cuts sharper suddenly , the gentle curve of lips serving as sole indicator of the placid silence they previously shared . “ since you are so dead set on misunderstanding me . . . ” palm slides from hip to lower back . enough pressure to make intention known . “ why don't i tell you exactly what i think , mh ? ” long lashes flutter . “ i do not give a single shit about what you do , who you are , what you bring to the table in regards to mr . nam . there is something wrong with you , around you . it rots from the core whenever you open your mouth , it follows you . and i won't sit around and wait until you've consumed every single person within this organization , you hear me ? ”
the touch of elif's hand is searing. not in the physical sense, though there is an unraveling beneath her palm. sinew stripped apart, calm disarmed in the face of someone who only ever serves to agitate. senses flare with hatred, further provoked by how easily she unravels at the pitch of elif's voice. she prides herself on being smarter now — skin toughened to rubber by the hands that birthed her. she left her feelings in a casket, let them choke on the dirt that'd coated her tongue, her throat, her arms. traded in her sensibilities for a heightened sense of danger and didn't waste time mourning the girl that could bother to feel so intensely. it was a worthwhile sacrifice, the things one does to survive.
but then there's elif. the antithesis to all her self - preservation.
they stand so close, the width of tactful palms isn't the only point of contact between them; meryem's hip brushes elif's, every indication that they should step away from each other. but she doesn't — she'll be burned before she lets the fire intimidate her. ❛ i understand you just fine. and my stance remains : if you think there is something so wrong with me, then stop questioning me about it and do something about it. ❜ there is a dare in her eyes, a dagger's glint that shines in elif's direction. ❛ if you feel the need to erase what troubles you, then by all means. be my guest. i'm sure mr. nam and all of your friends will appreciate it. ❜
"cute bandaid." sometimes he misses the days beomseok wasn't desensitized by him yet, the early office days when he'd see that cute blush form on his cheeks and promptly scurry off with the excuse of having work to do. he's become far too unfazed these days — hanbin is already plotting on how to change that. "i'm appalled you think so lowly of me. i'd get down there and do the dirty work myself if i had to." and boy, would it be dirty. "god, you're so dramatic. everyone's a little bit of a pervert — anyone with a heart that is." hanbin still firmly believes in the theory he developed on beomseok's first day here — that he's secretly a freak and this entire act is a ruse. "plus, a transfer request seems useless if you're just gonna let a train take you out." he slides his office chair back to his own desk, letting beomseok ponder on the reality that hanbin was far and away smarter than him. there's a folder on his desk that he's conveniently forgotten about until now, lifting it up and looking in his direction again. “oh, boss man wanted me to give this to you — guess i'm still his favorite after all.”
❛ you're ill if you think i'm trusting you anywhere near my genitals. ❜ booting up his computer, he grimaces at how easily those words left his mouth and wonders if it's normal to speak so casually to one's coworkers. he stops and narrows his eyes at hanbin. wondering. ❛ there's no way i just said that to you. are we this close ? ❜ anyway. ❛ and you're thinking about it the wrong way. the transfer request is a backup plan, in case plan a — the train — goes topside. i can never figure out when the thing runs, you know that. ❜ the only smears on his perfect attendance record have been the few times he's been invited to conferences and missed the damn train. big public transportation™ has it out for him, he's sure. he types in his password then stops to look at the envelope in hanbin's hand. distrust seeps in quick. ❛ will taking that folder from you harm or humiliate me in some way ? i don't know why i'm asking, you're not going to tell me. just give it here. ❜

⤿ eunseo + sully › @naervis .
the air inside the new house is sterile, heavy with the scent of fresh, unspilled potential and the lingering, sharp chemical tang of paint that has yet to surrender to the warmth of a life being lived. steps over the threshold, her heels clicking against the floor. lets her gaze sweep across the vast, echoing emptiness of the living room, a slow, predatory curve already etched into the corners of her mouth. “ i was already ten minutes late and still no one is here. aww, ” she states, the words tumbling out with a practiced, saccharine tilt that mocks the hollow silence of the foyer. drifts toward eunseo, the movement fluid and calculated, and extends a glass of deep, bruised red wine. as their fingers brush. a brief, electric friction that sully pretends doesn’t make the fine hairs on her arms stand in salute. tilts her head, her eyes glimmering with a dark, performative pity. “ and you didn't want me to be here. imagine if i didn't go. you'd be here all alone. ” she cooes, the sound vibrating with a low, taunting frequency.
smooths a stray hair back, her expression shifting into that practiced mask she usually reserves for her office. “ it’s okay, really. sometimes we tend to overestimate our importance in other people's lives. it’s a standard cognitive distortion. ” she pauses. in reality, she wants the silence, she wants the vacancy, she wants the intimacy of this moment to belong exclusively to them. but admitting to that need would be a concession, and sully never concedes. offers a smile that is thin, bright, and utterly hollow, her eyes fixed on eunseo with an intensity that borders on consumption. “ congrats on the place, though. it’s something… it’s very you. ” she murmurs, letting the silence stretch out, taut and trembling. “ so, are you going to thank me for saving you from the embarrassment of a party no one was going to show up to anyway ? what about a little house tour ? ”
of all the feelings to crop up in weird places, the first one that allows itself to be identified is resignation. doesn't have to be stated that sully is at fault for the dismal turn out of a well - planned housewarming. she trudges halfway to gratitude for at least sparing her actual humiliation before realizing this is no better — gratitude is a hat trick emotion that she isn't interested in falling for. makes it worse that sully's voice still holds the warmth of a vacated home : something that would be habitable again if they propped open the windows and blew the dust off some overdue conversations. it flickers across her face for a moment, the brief manifestation of hope, before she forces it down. face goes blank, and she turns away from the other, mid - monologue and all.
ventures into the kitchen without a word and digs beneath the sink for trash bags. to hell with it all. she starts swiping everything into the wrinkled abyss, hors d'oeuvres and canned pop and thank you bags. rips the decorations from the walls and tells herself to forget they were ever there in the first place. when one bag fills, she ties it by the handles and drops it at the door. each act is conducted without a word lended to sully. she can be a villain without a victim tonight ; eunseo offers silence and nothing more.
it's easy to get lost in the crowd when you never fit in it to begin with — metaphorically trampled on and left to find refuge in the form of company or drinks. if he was lucky, both. despite the warmth towards tiffany, it wasn't his usual persona that people paid for. it was something more like the roguish eye candy, good for his looks and brazen demeanor above all. that's what his date saw him as — exact opposite of the husband she'd left six months ago, a plaything to show off until she found something shinier. he's nothing more than a dog who's let off his leash on occasion — a reality he was comfortable with, for the most part. the cocky attitude has long faded, simmers into something more like quiet affection in the presence of someone who'd looked at him for everything he could never be. a brow raises, keenly listening to the words she carefully chooses, just to let out a chuckle at the result. "and here i thought my selling point was the excitement factor," he lets out, something unexpected washing over him. xavier leans in, like he's telling her some sort of secret — in a way, he is. "i think you might be the only one otherwise." it wasn't often he offered someone that wasn't surface level enjoyment, let alone the affection and painstaking warmth that came with the night they shared. he grins, flags down a bartender and orders two lemon drops. “no date tonight?”
skin heats at his proximity, but she chuckles nonetheless. ❛ it was a very exciting cuddling session, ❜ she whispers back, the same playfully scandalous tone leaking into her voice. to some degree, that held truth : to be wrapped up in his arms was a scandal, recipient to a touch that belonged to her no more than it did anyone else. a falsehood of companionship, comfort taken at mutual expense. her wallet, his personhood. once humiliation and good sense kicked in, she'd deleted his number and shoved the business card into a lockbox that she wills herself to forget the location of. his follow - up question brings her head out of the past and back to her present occupation. ❛ hm ? oh, no. ha. ❜ laugh is as awkward as it is mildly stunned. ❛ i paid you to hold me for an hour. i'm not sure that's the behavior of someone capable of getting a date to something like this. ❜ not even the type to pay for public companionship, though she holds some admiration for those who can. ❛ i was actually convinced i'd go the night without speaking to anyone at all ... i don't know if it's lucky for me or unfortunate for you to have run into a familiar face here. ❜ she hesitates for a moment, wondering where the line lies. what's okay and what's overly familiar for the man she swore to put out of her mind. relaxes enough to say, ❛ thank you for saying hi tonight. i hope it wasn't too much of a headache to see another client. ❜ then she tilts her head, curious. ❛ do you ever go to these things just because you want to ? or with a real date ? ❜
