the  enthusiasm  is  jarring,  to  say  the  least.  “uh  …  well.  sure,  i  guess.  do  we  have  to  stay  the  whole  time  though?  can't we ... sneak  off  early or  something?”  she's  already  practicing  her  sick  face,  assessing  if  it  would  be  morally  sound  to  eat  something  she  was  allergic  to.  usagi  just  looked  so  happy,  she  couldn't  outright  say  no.

 afterparty    noise    drowns    everything    out,    yet    her    face    is    the    first    to    command    his    attention    the    second    he    walks    through    the    door.    plucks    a    drink    clean    out    of    one    of    his    members'    hands    without    slowing    down,    making    a    beeline    straight    across    the    penthouse    floor.    ‘    and    the    verdict    is?    ’    jaein    leans    his    full    weight    against    the    wall,    occupying    far    more    space    than    he    actually    needs.    ‘    were    you    impressed?    ’    he    drinks    the    mystery    concoction    sloshing    around    in    the    plastic,    wincing    briefly    as    the    burn    hits    his    throat    before    he    recovers.    ‘    so,    who    invited    you?    ’    skyline    stretches    out    far    below    the    massive    windows,    and    yet    she's    in    the    same    room    once    more,    proving    the    universe    has    a    rather    ironic    sense    of    humor.    leaves    the    question    unvoiced,    hiding    his    need    to    know    if    she    came    here    with    someone    else,    specifically    a    man.

she's   marked   by   callousness   —   even   the   kindest   of   words   mustered   come   with   a   bite.   her   words   to   jaein   hadn't   been   in   malice   (   not   all   of   them,   at   least   ),   but   she   isn't   nearly   so   forthcoming   to   fall   for   the   allure   of   one   with   a   cute   face   and   sweet   voice.   in   her   eyes,   those   were   the   most   dangerous   of   them   all.   akin   to   a   siren,   thought   that   carries   on   as   her   eyes   keenly   focus   on   his   performance   —   understanding   the   charm   and   bravado   that   had   mountains   of   girls   screaming   his   name.   it   makes   her   ears   ring   from   the   sheer   volume,   unsure   if   all   of   this   entices   her   as   much   as   it   solidifies   the   danger   of   it   all. nevertheless,   against   all   warning   signs   —   she   finds   herself   tucked   into   a   corner   at   the   after   -   party,   crowd   in   full   swing   as   drinks   overflow.   being   alone   is   short   lived   as   she's   met   with   jaein   get   again,   unable   to   hide   the   smile   and   chuckle   before   lifting   a   hand   to   cover   her   face.   “no   hi?   hello?”   she   raises   a   brow,   music   drowning   out   the   silence   that   falls   between   them.   “i   would've   left   it   i   wasn't.”   her   eyes   fall   to   the   cup   in   his   hand,   no   less   amused   at   the   face   he   pulls   drinking   it.   he's   far   more   charming   when   he   wasn't   putting   on   a   show.   part   of   her   wants   to   lie,   point   to   someone   who'd   keep   only   keep   some   semblance   of   distance   between   them.   instead   she   nods   her   head   to   the   raised   section   of   the   penthouse   floor,   men   in   suits   —   including   a   ceo   who'd   greeted   her   and   offered   a   private   tour   fifteen   minutes   ago.   “the   one   of   who   has   his   cronies   feeding   him   praise.”   probably   ill   -   advised   to   insult   his   boss.   she   glances   back   at   jaein   with   a   shrug.   “friend   of   my   father's,”   she   clarifies,   promptly   pivoting   as   she   takes   the   cup   from   his   hands,   eyeing   the   contents   in   suspicion.   “what's   in   the   drink?”

STOPPING IS NOT AN OPTION. there are no other options but to move forward, attempting to follow in the rhythm set by yufeng even when mei's own legs are threatening to buckle underneath her. hunger is not entirely foreign to her — days could pass without it back at the estate, but paired with the distance she has put between herself and her home it is almost excruciating how little energy her body can muster now. she lets out a quiet groan as she staggers after him. she has almost worked out a comeback to his remark when the question inevitably comes. she should lie, but has never been taught how to, so she settles for fragments of truth instead. « i have never been. » she gazes up at him almost expectantly, awaiting mockery or complete dismissal. it has been so long since she spoke to another person that she is unsure whether it would make her stop though. « i wish to travel. to see the world, i suppose. i hold faith that there is more to it than what i've seen. » and that there is beauty, warmth, love — things she has only ever read about. « i like to believe i am running to something. » though what it is she is not sure yet.

he's  keenly  watching  out  of  the  corner  of  his  sight,  making  sure  she  doesn't  pass  out  or  fall  flat  on  her  face.  otherwise?  it  wasn't  as  if  yufeng  claimed  to  be  some  gentleman  —  once  their  paths  diverged,  she'd  face  the  same  struggles  as  she  was  now.  least  she'd  be  experienced  in  it,  even  if  his  advice  would  be  to  ditch  some  of  her  belongings.  the  quiet  groan  beside  him  makes  him  pause,  fully  turning  his  head  to  her  with  furrowed  brows.  “why  did  you  bring  so  many  things  with  you?”  no  offer  made  yet,  nothing  more  than  the  silent  realization  that  she  truly  was  a  fish  out  of  water  —  utterly  hopeless  as  far  as  he  could  see. “ the  sea  can  often  be  much  harsher  than  land ...  though  sometimes,  it's  the  only  option, i suppose.”  most  travelers  would  groan  at  the  thought  of  going  by  boat  —  stuck  and  surrounded  by  water  in  a  volatile  setting,  fate  left  in  the  hands  of  a  captain.  his faith in her isn't particularly strong. he  bears  his  teeth  and  laughs  quietly  at  her  words,  something  so  innocent  about  what  she  says,  so  full  of  hope  and  faith  in  this  world.  even  if  he's  ever  the  pessimist,  he  doesn't  wish  to  dull  its  brightness  for  her  just  yet.  “do  you  have  anywhere  you'd  like  to  go?  or  is  this  more  of  a  ...  listless  adventure  you're  taking?”

“yes,  you  will  —  i've  known  you  far  too  long  to  fall  for  that  line,”  ploy  huffs  out,  crossing  her  arms  over  her  chest  and  settling  further  into  the  slightly  uncomfortable  chair.  “if  i  come  closer,  you  know  we'll  both  end  up  regretting  it.”

                    " —— and then we had a fight, " finishes her sentence for her. too riled up to apologize and too prideful to ask if she was still planning on being his plus - one to some work obligation he most definitely did not want to go to, he's so surprised to see her that he temporarily forgets how he vowed to just never speak again because everything he did say seemed to irritate her. " why did you? "

“yes,  aiden.  i  remember.  i  was  there.”  tightness  takes  over  selma's  features,  like  she's  already  resisting  the  beginnings  of  another  argument.  it  didn't  help  that  he  seemed  to  only  point  out  the  obvious,  ignore  that  she  was  obviously  here  because  she  cared.  right  about  now,  she  wished  she  had  enough  pride  to  never  even  show  up  in  the  first  place.  “if  you  think  really  hard,  the  answer  should  be  awfully  clear.”

                    " i don't need to watch you to know. my ears work just fine, " she's pestering, smile warm and frame leaning into the other's shoulder. " mm, it was probably a love kick. want me to kiss it better? "

“still  creepy,  f.y.i,”  sunny  shoots  back,  avoiding  all  possible  endearment  that  came  along  with  poppi's  focus  on  her.  instead,  it's  instinct  to  push  back  —  even  as  her  cheeks  redden  with  the  following  question.  “what?  no?  so  you'll  kiss  my  shin  —  because  i  definitely  have  the  mark  to  prove  it.”  she  did  not.
