truth be told, the longer she stands here, feet growing uncomfortable in narrow flats, the less she understands why. it'd been a whim, calling that number again, but all of the steps that followed were hard to similarly dismiss. a waiver to sign. a fee to pay. a date to book. an outfit to select. a spot to agree on. it'd been so tedious, she almost couldn't keep pretending no thought had gone into it. but by the time her conscience stepped in, the business card that she'd locked away had found a new home on the sleek surface of her desk, nestled between an ink well and her froggy coin purse. and so she's here, seated at a riverfront café with a lemonade growing watery in front of her while she waits and convinces herself that this isn't a mistake.
"yo-you shouldn't l-listen to him so much." ellie mumbles to the other as she fiddles with her notebook on the table, other hand jotting down notes. "d-dean worries to-too much." referring to her older brother who probably asked the other to check in on her. the older male had a habit of worrying about her a lot and asking other's too keep an eye on her when he wasn't around. THE CHANGE IN ATMOSPHERE is so drastic when it's only her left at the club. the burning stage lights are turned off, the hollering of patrons died, and she can hear her own footsteps as she crosses the floor from the wardrobe to the bar. she misses it every time it ends. wants to be desirable, needs to feel wanted. instead she wipes the counter clean, sticky residue from drinks spilled soon vanished. she only looks up as she hears footsteps trailing into the room, squinting into the darkness. « sorry, we're closed. »

HE ATTEMPTS TO ENTER their shared apartment quietly that night, but caim is not a gentle man. the door creaks behind him as it slides shut and his boots thump against the floor for the few seconds before he peels them off. his hands are sticky with blood. there's a gash running from the corner of his eyes almost down to his lips, but the dull throbbing pain of it is a welcome reminder that he has to was tonight's evidence away — and he has to hurry. the lights go on on the second floor, but caim is still standing in the dark, frozen, listening to the familiar footsteps nearing the staircase. « hi. just go back to sleep, » he offers softly, but adamantly. he can't move until they have. he's a chess piece with no other option but to wait.

“hey, you want to get out of here for a bit? the vibes in the dorm are... suspicious. i can't tell if annie's about to kill geonu or if yeongsik's going to eat jinsoo. either way, i don't want to be here for it.”

Fingers move with practiced ease over the strings of an acoustic guitar and JJ hums along to the melody that fills his bedroom, something that sounds almost like actual words and lyrics but isn’t quite that, brows furrowed in concentration. The last note comes, hangs in the air, and he sits there, quiet and still for several moments as he asses his own performance. “Something like that,” he announces at last, gently lying his favorite instrument on the bed next to him. “But I dunno… something about it doesn’t really sound right.” Truth is, he knows exactly what the problem is: nothing that he’s shown Kumiko in the past couple of weeks has been even a little sincere. All he does these days is hide and lie to her, from avoiding her at all costs until he gets worried about acting suspicious and sends her a random text or invites her somewhere outside to buying a brand-new composition notebook that he could bring around her so she doesn’t glimpse at his real one where all his feelings remain hidden in between messy handwriting and stains from coffee cups. At some point, he even makes up a story about how the change happened because he lost that one and pins his grumpiness on the art that is now “forever gone” and feels so guilty he doesn’t talk to her for two days. Considering their whole relationship is built on near constant communication and a raw vulnerability that he’s never experienced with anyone else, the differences between the past couple of months and how jittery and inconsistent he’s been recently are stark. The solution? Invite her over to work on songs and act normal so he can convince her everything is fine before she starts doubting it too much.
Bathed in the soft light coming from his night stand (because he loathes using the big lamp that hangs above), Kumiko looks ethereal. It punches the air out of him when his eyes linger on her face and it hits him then and there just how stupid of an idea this actually was. Inviting her here, late at night when his roommate is gone? What was JJ fucking thinking? Sure, this has been completely standard for the entirety of their friendship, cooping up in each other’s spaces where they can be alone and think, bouncing ideas off of each other until they create something beautiful, but things are no longer the same. It’s exciting and terrifying being alone with her on his bed now, exactly how things should be and something that should never happen again. Jumps on his feet suddenly, scrambling to get as far away as his tiny room allows before he can do something terrible like start to lean in, back turned to Miko as he pretends to be rifling through the junk littering his desk. “Phone, phone… where’d I put my phone?” His elbow catches a pile of books, sending them falling on the floor, but he barely pays attention to that, forcing himself to focus on the task at hand until his heart rate calms down a little. “Ah! There you are. Oh fuck, it’s pretty late already.” A subtle introduction to the idea that maybe she should leave. Finally, Junjie turns to the mess he’s made, dropping to a crouch as he begins to pick up his recent reads one by one. “This one’s pretty good,” he muses casually. “You should—” And that is the exact point his attention turns to Kumiko again… and the notebook that had, of course, landed close to her. His stomach sinks. There’s no way she doesn’t recognize it: tattered from use, decorated with doodles, and so unlike the pristine one he’s been using recently. Before he’d become so brutally aware of his feelings for his friend, he was eagerly flipping through the pages and showing off all the lyrics and poems he’d been working on, asking for her opinion and wisdom, and now panic practically explodes in his chest, eyes growing wide with unmistakable horror. “Don’t! You can’t touch that.”
