I often think about people calling Yuna an overbearing "momager" who's trying to control every aspect of Shane's life, because all I can think of is that a lot of people don't seem to understand Yuna as a character.
Yuna who is a second gen Asian immigrant. Whose parents came to Canada, presumably to give her better chances in life. To give her the kind of future they didn't have themselves.
Yuna, who learned to translate, to advocate, to take on responsibilities at such a young age because her parents did try, really, but Yuna grew up speaking English, grew up in Canada, and they did not. And her parents told her, time and time again, to be a good girl, to work hard, to fit in.
Please, Yuna, don't make a fuss, don't make yourself a target, don't make them look at you even more than they already do. And Yuna internalised that racism, knew how much it could hurt, how many opportunities could be taken from you in the name of it, and she decided that it would end with her.
Yuna decided that she would spend her life trying to protect her son from this, as best as she could, anyway. And Shane was good at hockey, so bright and talented and it could provide him with so many opportunities.
Only. Only. Racism does not magically go away, even if you try to protect your child with everything you got. And the hockey league is so very, terribly racist, but your son is so talented, so Yuna works hard to make sure he stood a chance against a system that still worked against them. She makes sure he gets more practice than the other kids. Makes sure coaches see him. Makes sure he gets brand deals, because everything can be taken from him in an instant, because life isn't fair, especially not to them, and she *has* to prepare him for the worst case scenario.
And she feels terrible, because how is it fair to have to tell a child that people will be cruel to him, that life will be unfair, that he will always have to work harder than his peers and how sometimes it still won't be enough, and all because of who he is as a person. How is it fair that he has to work so hard to have some sense of security, just in case. Just in case.
And please. Please, Shane, be a good boy, work hard, try to fit in. Please, don't make a fuss, please don't make yourself a target, okay? Because times have changed, but not enough, and history repeats itself, and Yuna will be damned if her own son has to go through the same, but he still ends up bearing the same weight, the same responsibilities.
And she wishes it could be different, she really does. But it isn't, not yet, so she does what she can, she does what's in her power, and that's giving her son a small sense of security she never had, and for now that will have to be enough.
And she's sorry, okay? But she did really try, so very hard, and she's hoping one day her son will see, her son will understand why she did the things she did, but she hopes he will never have to do the same for a child of his own β€οΈβπ©Ή

Ilya being committed to the bit on their wedding day and very seriously insisting that they can't see each other in their suits before the ceremony ("Ilya, we quite literally bought these together" "Does not matter, the rules are the rules, Shane"), but it all backfires when Ilya low-key has a panic attack because he's about to marry the love of his life and he knows Shane would never chicken out, but he can't help this sudden anxiety, so Sveta goes and gets his man and Shane carefully walks into the room and Ilya just "No, you can't be here, not before the ceremony" and Shane gently wraps his hands around his upper arms and his voice is so soft when he says "It's okay, I don't care. All I care about is that my husband needs me right now" and Ilya looks at him, teary-eyed, "I'm not your husband yet" and Shane smiles "Exactly. That's why I need you to take a deep breath so we can fix that, okay?" And that earns him the most adoring smile and nod, and Shane leans in for a kiss and when he pulls back he whispers "Don't worry, I will pretend to see you for the first time when I meet you outside" and that's when Ilya helplessly, joyfully laughs, realising once again why Shane was the person he wanted to spend the rest of his life with
I don't wanna get anyone's hopes up, but I've been thinking about my unfinished Barmaro fic a lot, and all I'm saying is that I might just try to finish this story after all π₯²
