ohhhhh I was you once. you are INCREDIBLY brave just for getting through each day and I mean that with my whole heart!!!!

the adults around you may say dumb shit such as "you should get outside more" and "you should try and sleep better" and "I don't think you're getting enough vitamins". and it sounds really flippant and dismissive and OFTEN IT IS but as someone who had a Horrible time as a teen and has since figured out as an adult how Being Alive Works: ALL OF THAT IS GENUINELY TRUE. UNFORTUNATELY. TO A HUGE DEGREE. SO SORRY. IT'S DUMB I KNOW.

it's unbelievable how much these things can impact your state of mind. and your physical well-being. even if the rest of your life is messy and difficult and stressful, these things will at the VERY LEAST give you a CRUCIAL buffer for dealing with them. you don't want to be stressed AND dehydrated AND sleep deprived. it amplifies your misery to the power of ten. speaking as someone with a permanent mental disorder AND a permanent health condition. some things can't be cured but they CAN be made so much more bearable. you deserve your life to be bearable!

but these things can feel impossibly tough! so do them gently and on your own terms. find a sugary drink that boasts about the vitamins it includes and make it a weekly treat. make bedtime a treat that you look forward to! fun dim lighting and a bit of chocolate and a good movie. snuggle into bed. sleeping well was genuinely life changing. I am looking in your eyes as serious as I can be. you gotta sleep as close to 8 hours as you can manage. if not more. 5 hours is better than 4. etc. you will notice your emotional resilience increase, your memory will improve, your body will hurt less. sleep is a wonderdrug.

hang out with your friends and get there by walking or riding a bike at least partway. pick up dancing. dance BADLY. the endorphins you get from exercise are so extremely good for stress. my number one coping mechanism in times of stress (besides relying on other people!!! important!!!) is to get on my bike and just GO.

Introducing the Purple-crested Turaco (the rest of the Turaco family all.have similarly striking red wingtips in flight, although their bodies are much greener and they have white eyestripes)

Sticking with the purple theme, and similar to some of the birds above, the iridescent Violet-backed Starling is next!

Amazing camouflage and a hauntingly beautiful call, the Diederiks Cuckoo is one of the prettiest patchwork birds out there.

Proudly representing Angola, the Angola Pitta is a rare and elusive bird. It is however worth the search!

Next up, we have the beautiful (and tiny) Violet-eared Waxbill.

And my personal favourite (and national board of Kenya!): The Lilac-breasted Roller.
