We all know the "jokes" about how old bronies either came out as queer or became fascists - except they're not really jokes, and a lot of the queer ones admit to having been in the pipeline before they came out (some in a way that implies they never totally got out of said pipeline and don't understand the gravity of it),
GamerGate was an entire right-wing reactionary movement that was - and this is not hyperbole - partially responsible for turning fascism into a "legitimate" position by the American Overton window, composed entirely of people who feared losing their fan spaces,
We've had terfs right here on tumblr dot com BRAGGING about how useful fandom is as a recruiting space,
TJLC was a big pipeline for acephobia on this hellsite in particular, when people argued that headcanoning Sherlock as ace was inherently homophobic because it was denying a TOTALLY GONNA BE CANON (while the creators were promising that it wasn't going to be canon) gay pairing, and puritanical, and just HAVING that headcanon was saying that people COULDN'T ship Johnlock, all in the interest of a "fake" sexuality and "pretending to be oppressed" and oh whoops there you went,
We see people who all but center their fandom activity and identities around figuring out which people in predominantly queer fandom spaces are SECRETLY PEDOPHILES AND GROOMERS, acting consciously or otherwise under the assumption that predominantly queer fandom spaces are just massively infested with them in a way that other spaces are not for SOME reason, who twist the definition of "pedophilia" in these spaces until it covers shipping a 17-year old fictional character with an 18-year old fictional character, or a 30-year old with a 45-year old, or including an autistic character in a ship, and drawing two 17-year old characters kissing constitutes "child porn", and who unironically say we should bring back the Hays Code and Censorship Is Good Actually And Our Problem Is We Don't Do It Enough and this often becomes a pipeline to "sex ed is child abuse; people shouldn't even know what sex is until they turn 18; you need my consent to wear certain outfits in public if I see them as sexually charged, and Pride SHOULD be an assimilationist sideshow for our corporate overlords family-friendly party with no sadness or anger or ESPECIALLY acknowledgement of sex allowed",
We've seen otherwise progressive people defend literal hate symbols in fanart when pushback against the above brand of reactionaries gets corrupted into zero-nuance "it's us vs. them so anything they don't like is Good",
Even outside of those examples some of the most vicious, unapologetic, blatant queerphobic abuse I've seen in recent years hasn't come from right-wingers but from LGBT+ people, dressing their deep, violent, seething hatred for queer people who aren't exactly like them in a thin veneer of progressive language, who have become so convinced that they're the main character of the fucking universe that they think writing or enjoying a queer story that doesn't resonate with them is more queerphobic than sending a queer person who writes or enjoys such a story countless rape and death threats and denying their identity,
We've seen these examples again and again and again, and we keep seeing it again and again and again, so I am once again on my knees BEGGING people to recognize that this is not Something That Happens To Other, BAD People, or Something That Happens To People In BAD Fandoms, or Something That Happens To People On The OTHER Side Of Perennial Drama; this is something that CAN happen to you.
These things are the result of the fact that fandom is, by nature, a place of heightened emotion and if you don't know what to look out for that is very exploitable; you need to know the methods people use to do this, simply Being In The Right Fandoms or Liking The Right Ships is not enough.
So, if you see someone trying to convince you that you have the ONLY valid approach to any specific character, or ship, or show, or whatever, that your ship is activism and your fanfics are praxis, and liking something else or liking the same thing differently is Only For Bad People, that is the single biggest red flag that YOU NEED TO RUN, THEY'RE TRYING TO SELL YOU SOMETHING THAT YOU DO NOT WANT
Seeing people reblog this with mile-long DNI pages that talk about about "irredeemable media" and "you're a pedophile if you like XYZ mainstream piece of media and I hate you" and "if you like these things that are bad irl happening in fiction in any context that's apologism for them in reality and you should be ashamed" and "if you're okay with consenting adults having weird sex and talking about weird sex with other consenting adults and putting weird sex in appropriately tagged fanfics that means you support rape and pedophilia and bestiality and incest and you're evil" and "terfs and exclusionists and gatekeepers gtfo BUT combination labels aren't valid and trans men aren't really oppressed beyond collateral damage and fuck off if you think they are lol" and doing the biggest facepalm of my life like

Fae politics make brain go brrr. Genuinely this fic is one of my favourites, even though I don't tend to read a lot of Merlin fic. Sometimes a fic outside your usual fandoms just hits all the right beats to make it into the faves anyway.

A confusing mix of emotions rises in Soap at that, muddies his thoughts like disturbed silt. His nostrils flare as he snorts, lowering his muzzle so the knight cannot see the unhappy twist of his wide mouth. His ears press back. He'll admit keeping himself fed has been a lot easier with the knight's semi-weekly delivery; he hasn't had to hunt, lure, or trick for his meals in ages. But Soap has lived for many, many long years, and knows he will not go hungry.
He's…sad, he realizes. Upset that he will no longer be able to catch a glimpse of this knight, with his golden hair and masked face. He's grown accustomed to it, dare he say looks forward to their routine, even though the knight has only ever spoken to him the last time he was here.

When John gets booted from his team for a "breach of contract" Simon does his best to be professional, to welcome his new goalie. That's what good captains do. It's just a shame MacTavish is such an arrogant prick.
This is it. The fic that suckered me into the CoD fandom. I cannot recommend it enough it is so good.

An archaeological dig out in the war-devastated deserts of Manda'yaim unearths part of the lost temple of Tarre Vizsla, and inside it a group of Mandalorian Jedi preserved in beskar. The beautiful youth at the center seems to be the keystone of a ritual long forgotten.
But figuring out how to wake Obi-Wan is only the beginning of the story...
I adore a Sleeping Beauty AU, and this fic more than delivers. I just love this fic.

When I say I could read 100k of this fic and still need more. The worldbuilding packed into just 2k is amazing, and good worldbuilding is my kryptonite.

Cody extinguishes the fire before going and securing his bedroll to Ghost and slipping him a sugarcube. He pats the white mustang affectionately before setting his boot in the stirrup and saddling up.
“You’ll spoil that horse, you know,” Ben says as he finishes his coffee. Cody raises his brows.
“Oh? If I spoil Ghost, then you pamper Boga,” he says, and Ben sniffs haughtily as he climbs up into his blue roan’s saddle, not dignifying that with a response.

That all changes the day Bucky finds himself inside CATastrophe, the local pet rescue, recovering from a panic attack in the back room of the shop.
He’s used to walking by the place, not visiting, but the next thing Bucky knows, he’s hanging signs and being used as a climbing tree for a bunch of freshly-acquired kittens. And he just...keeps going back. First for the kittens, then for the disaster shop owner who rescues actual kittens from actual trees and teaches archery as a side-gig, and eventually because he’s hopelessly in love.
(Clint was in love before Bucky ever walked in the door.)
WinterHawk + cute pets is always going to be a winning combo for me, and this fic delivers it in spades. It's a favourite for when I'm looking for something soft and sweet.

Bucky Barnes returns to Brooklyn ready to get back into the world, make friends and sleep with Steve's super hot neighbor. The fact that the guy turns out to be a single dad to two-year-old triplets who spend most of their time causing mischief, trouble and mayhem doesn't deter Bucky at all. Steve would like it on record that he thinks Bucky is insane.
No powers AU and a kidfic? I'm sold every time. This fic is so cute I cannot recommend it enough.

Well, to begin with. Then it's pretty much all about him falling head-over-heels for his incredibly hot - yet slightly tragic - ASL teacher.
I just love fics where Bucky learns ASL to help him communicate after all the trauma.

And look, he doesn't mean to start fake dating his accident victim either, but sometimes life is weird that way. You just gotta go with the flow when it happens, and learn to be the best fake boyfriend ever.
Fake dating, Clint and Tony both being a little disastrous, this fic is painfully adorable.

Warlord AU where things really aren't what they seem. This fic is one of my absolute favourites, and I cannot recommend it enough.

This fic is a lot of fun, and meshes the Witcher universe with a modern setting in a really fun way.

Aiden Kett and Lambert Wilkson accidentally get married, and this is honestly probably the least of their problems.
Featuring, in no particular order: technically not tax fraud from a legal standpoint but definitely tax fraud from an emotional standpoint, gender noncompliance, what do you mean you're moving in together, Geralt of Rivia as a professional horse girl, goats, an egregious amount of snark, a lot of take out food, licensed monster management in leather pants, Aiden's massive competency kink, found family, a great deal of love in the face of mental health struggles, and kittens.
Maybe no one in this family had a good childhood, but they'll be damned if they won't fight for a happily ever after.
This fic is stuffed full of feelings and healing and people trying to build healthy relationships with each other.

They're a dull black that it takes him a moment to realize must be chalkboard paint, because near the tables there are words and doodles, and all over, even the erased sections are stained with faint colored marks like the walls have soulmarks.
This is THE soulmate fic to me. Every soulmate fic I have ever written has been inspired by this one. I absolutely adore it.

I find myself missing the days where fandom was a private experience more and more, by which I mean to say: I miss the concept of "friends only" journals and blogs. I miss when the pace of the Internet and therefore also fandom was slower. I miss when memes stayed relevant for months if not years. I miss when a new person entered fandom and everyone and their grandmother would outdo themselves trying to befriend them. I miss the community feeling of fandoms where you were almost proud to be a "contributing member" whether that was as a writer, a reader, an artist, an extremely cool contributor with other crafts, or a supportive friend.
I absolutely hate huge Discord servers where things are so busy and nothing stays on topic for long, and someone is always spamming @ everyone and there are so many people you can't form a bond with any of them. I hate how posting anything in fandom now is posting it publicly; it's no longer some fun write-up you did for your friends but something you have to also check over to make sure it's suitable for the entire fandom to read.
I hate how fandoms in general have moved away from giving creatives feedback on their art, especially authors. There are more people reading fanfiction than ever before but almost no one comments, not even to just say thanks, not even in some larger fandoms. This goes right back to missing the community feeling of fandom. I understand wanting easy rebloggable content, and I very much get having almost nothing in the proverbial tank at the end of the day to say witty things, but if you read something and you enjoyed it: say so.
I think people have forgotten that fandom, and sharing creative works with fandom, is a social experience, and this gets truer and truer the older you are and the better your craft gets. You don't get good, solid writers in fandom by ignoring them. They cannot thank you for your kudos. They certainly cannot thank you for your silence. If we were all after money we would strive to write professionally. If we we wrote merely for ourselves we would let our stories rot on our hard drives. Writers in fandom are looking to share and socialize with an audience. That has been the backbone of fandom and all creation in fandom for as long as fandom has been around.
And it feels very much like that is slipping away into anonymous obscurity where nobody wants to take the time to make a connection—however fleeting.
And then people wonder why their favorite authors stop writing. They legitimately do not understand! They express sadness. But when you go look at the stories they're sad about losing, they never took the time to even give the author one word of encouragement, and no writer writes forever for free.
Fandom has always been a delicate balancing act of those who make gifts and those who take them. The thing about taking a gift, though, is that you say thank you for it, and in fandom spaces giving thanks functions as a link. It's what keeps things balanced. It's what spurs further creation and further thanks. On and on, back and forth.
In recent years, with the Internet moving so fast and fandom along with it, we've lost those slow and meaningful connections.
Take heed:
You cannot marvel in the halls of creation for all eternity without giving something back. Eventually the walls and shelves will be bare and there will be nothing new to behold.
You are responsible for curating your own online experience.
If something upsets you, makes you angry or queasy or triggers you, stop reading/looking at it. Avoid things that might make you feel that way.
Learn to use the Sort and Filter function on AO3, especially the Exclude tools.
On social media, block and mute accounts / tags / words when necessary.
If you hated something, you don’t need to tell that to the creator or start pointing fingers at them publicly.
The Back button is free. Use it.
Addendum:
Yes, for this to work, creators need to tag their works accordingly, so that people know what sort of content they are about to engage with and can nope out if necessary.
I will probably make another PSA about the importance of proper tagging later.

Today Obi-Wan watches Naberrie at work. Naberrie is dedicated, meticulous and solely focused on his tasks. Each motion has been repeated, learned by heart and honed as a reflex over and over and over. From what Obi-Wan could gather, Naberrie’s last year has been mainly centered around training for their expedition. He’s been formed in various fields with a panel of carefully picked experts: he’s learned the steps, prepared for the unexpected, amassed a copious amount of knowledge no other Human could easily achieve in very little time, and he will do what an entire set of men is expected to do on his own.
COMPOR calls it “clone efficiency”. Years ago it used to rally the hearts of distraught Republic citizens to the war effort; now it’s a testament of the utility of clones. The propaganda is continuously evolving, sometimes headed to benefit the Republic, other times to steer clear of public discontent. Commander Cody of the 501st has spent half of his life being a model, an example, and a reassurance—and seeing him at work does confirm the saying.
This morning is devoted to setting up the Durian spectrometer. Obi-Wan has a vague understanding of its purpose; it's about cosmic ray events, and it has nothing to do with Ahsoka-4 on its own, rather its exotic location. That’s pretty much all he knows. He's not sure he wants to know more about it, but he does want to ask Naberrie nonetheless. It might be curiosity—both about the setup and the setter.
