Quick dumb question:
What more can I be doing to improve my writing? Currently I enter short story comps, flash fiction events, and story prompt comps, though my pace has slowed to only two or three a month. I try to write for at least an hour and a half each morning, from 6:30-8am before I have to go get my one remaining homeschool kid up for the day and help with my disabled spouse’s daily care routine. I work a few shifts a week at grocery, and do house cleaning and pet sitting, as well as running a (mostly unsuccessful) craft market stall so life is kinda busy. I try to find times to write throughout the day too, and edit at night.
When I write, as well as short stories, I plug away at longer manuscripts, ranging from early and middle school reader novels and two YA novels. Every time submissions are open in my country I submit my best work, only after multiple edits, but I’ve kinda run out of agents and publishers who accept unagented submissions at this point.
Which leads me back to my question, because rejections mean I’m not meeting standard and not writing what they want to publish. So, how do I improve my writing? How do I do it on a budget? I try to read as much as I can and keep seeing the rejections as good experience, but my infamously low self-esteem is starting to overwhelm me.
Any help would be really appreciated, and I’m sorry for going on such a long, self-pitying rant. Ta xx
Struggling to be a real human today. I’m losing shifts because I’m slower than other workers on account of my wonky hip. I’ve lost two pet sitting clients and a cleaning client as well. I’m legitimately running out of publishers and agents to submit to and I know my writing isn’t improving. My last market day was a bust. Two paintings today flopped.
And my brain just keeps repeating to me that it’s been over 1,000 days now since my daughter died. I miss her so much.
Sorry, pity party done with.
My hair curling like a perfect spring today.
Recent feedback on my manuscripts was that I tend to jump into the adventure very fast. I seem to dislike the “ordinary world” portion of the narrative arc.
Now all I can think of is Rich Fulcher saying, “straight into the action!” while in full Bob Fossil get up. The man will forever live rent free in my mind.
Also, the feedback is correct. I don’t want to spend three chapters establishing the boring world. I want to get straight into the weird.

Deltarune! Deltarune! Deltarune!
My house is full of teenagers! All here for the Deltarune!
I do this every time. I start with a good idea. Then I muck it up. Let’s see if I can rescue this painted from its ugly ‘in the middle’ phase.
Reason I shouldn’t leave my watercolour paints in the bed: can’t find them now.
Pulled out the oil paints this morning for some Apollo and Hyacinthus

We went on a date to Kmart. Bought each other a new book. Romance.
If you cannot find a hair-tie, twine works just as well
Tonight is my bambino’s year 12 formal. I’m freaking out. Yes, they are 6’5” and have a date-mate who I adore. Yes, they can do their own make-up and have picked their own outfit (including a spectacular red velvet tailcoat) and yes, in one month they will be an adult and legally allowed to drink. But they are my bambina! My tiny little one! Nearly the same age I was when I became a parent!
… I’m having a slight meltdown over here
My darling Boosh babies, have some Lil Gregg this fine Wednesday.
(I painted him in watercolours.)
When I set a goal for the year, to get a dozen rejection letters on manuscripts I send out, I didn’t factor in the harsh truth that most of the time you don’t even get a formal rejection. There’s just a nauseating silence, an absence in the inbox. As a well documented praise whore I do not like it. Not one bit.

Some days I just paint Medusa.
Things I love about growing old, The Third: me forgetting to put my teeth in is seen as less freaky with each passing year .
