I have been listening to these songs on repeat lately.

I took about a year and a half of Mandarin in college a long time ago and regret very much that I dropped it. I was taking the class simply because I enjoy learning languages and it was fun. I was doing really well with understanding and speaking, but I didn't put enough time or effort into learning how to write, so my grades in that class weren't as good as I wanted and it was bringing my average down. Plus, I felt bad that I preferred doing other things to practicing writing so I gave up. Fast forward to now, and watching Chinese dramas has revived my interest in learning the language, so I've picked it back up again. It drives me absolutely crazy to watch shows or enjoy music in a language I can't understand, and from my previous studies, I can understand just barely enough to make me feel like this is one challenge I've got to accept. When I have time, I find the lyrics to songs I like and do the best I can using Google Translate to try and understand the parts I don't understand directly, which is most of them lol, but I already understand more than I did a year ago, so that's something, anyway.

1. Life of Us/Drifting - Xiao Zhan

This, and "Go Ahead" are my most favourite songs from XZ's album "WM" to the point that I played it so much that it ended up being the #1 song on my Spotify and YouTube from 2025. I love this song so much and the whimsical music video that came with it. (Still hoping for a WM international release, though!)

2. Bystander - Wang Yibo

Probably my most favourite Yibo song. It's also one of my favourite performances of his.

3. How Soon Is Now - Love Spit Love / The Smiths

Before "The Untamed" became my comfort show, there was "Charmed". I loved the show and the sisters so much that I play the theme song whenever I miss them.

4. Summer on a Hot Tin Roof by Wang Heye

Got introduced to this song when Luo Yunxi covered it in a performance sometime last year (I think, iirc), and I loved it since.

5. The Masterplan - Noel Gallagher and the High Flying Birds

Oasis has been one of my favourite bands growing up, and this is my ultimate favourite song of theirs.

2. Wu Ji OST The Untamed Xiao Zhan & Wang Yibo I adore the whole soundtrack obviously but this song holds a special place in my heart

3. Are You Going To Scarborough Fair by Forestella - this song is so beautiful and spine tingling alas I’ve never been able to track down the song without the reaction. Their rendition raises the hair on my arms every time I listen to it. I adore all their songs the four of their voices create something quite unique and simply beautiful and their covers are so good.

4. Battlefield SVRCINA I just love female vocals and her voice is amazing and I play this so much on Spotify that’s it’s always in my top played and has been for years.

5. Sleeping Sun Nightwish (Tarja era) I adore Tarja she’s my favourite artist and there is just something special about her voice and this song haunts me. Nightwish had so many great songs but alas the way they got rid of Tarja tainted the band for me. Tomas was cruel. But she has thrived on her own and her solo stuff is brilliant but this song remains a fav

1. The entirety of the WM album by Xiao Zhan. But if i really had to choose ONE song, then it'll be Bonne Nuit. The tenderness in his voice makes me wanna weep snotty tears it's too much 🤧

2. The Let's Go EP by In Love with A Ghost. Only four tracks and 12 mins long but this is my home base. my neutral ground. I return to it for zen and have looped it a thousand times not exaggerating. The first track Flowers is like my brain's reset button

3. This fan-made TGCF song 苍生不配 (The World is Unworthy, to the tune of Hanabi). The lyrics are incredible, the singing is just....wow...and the choice of melody is just SO FITTING. Argh... and the longing, and that visceral scream and and...GAR just go listen to it if you're a tgcf fan if you haven't already. here's a website with a translation of the lyrics plus footnotes.

4. 我在 (I Am Not Here) by Wang Yibo.

every 🐢 should know this song by heart. and be able to get that final hoarse belty 我在.... down. just go for it. and i love that there's a Creep by Radiohead tribute in the melody.

5. The entirety of the Lord of the Rings soundtrack, yes, all ten hours of it. but especially the Shire theme. Gandalf's humming begins and suddenly i'm longing for a home that's not mine, and have the urge to grow potatoes (which i currently am, btw)
