I sat alone in this beautiful park in the gorgeous weather today with my #currentread #defy by #sarablarson I almost stopped reading this one because of some #triggerwarning sexual assault built into the #fantasy society, which is usually a big turn-off for me, personally. But I’m glad I kept reading this one, it’s really interesting! A girl dresses as a boy at her twin brother’s suggestion to escape the horrible fate of girls captured by the armies, and instead becomes the most skilled soldier in the prince’s personal guard. But as she grows up and her figure gets more feminine and her emotions for her comrades and the prince begin to change, can she keep her secret or will she be punished extra for hiding, as is the standard practice? #theprincessbride is one of my favourite movies and when I found out its based on a book I had to read it! Surprisingly, the movie framework of the sick little boy being read the book by the dad is actually the way the book goes too, except the sick little boy is supposedly the author and the story is an old fairy tale his grandfather read to him. The author works so hard to convince the reader that he did not write his own story, but rather published a loving retelling of someone else’s that I had to google it after to understand he is lying and he wrote all of it lol. I guess he wanted his story to feel like a recovered old fable that was maybe based on a true story. The book is even labeled as “abridged by William Goldman” instead of written by. I’d recommend this as a fall read because some parts are really creepy, especially the one major part they cut from the movie, Humperdink’s 100 floor zoo with a different nightmare monster on each floor! One of my favourite series #roguesoftherepublic by #patrickweekes ! #thepalacejob is a really fun and diverse adventure about a fantasy world with a floating city called Heaven’s Spire where all the wealthy and powerful live, and prisoners are forced to dangle underneath the city to clean it. A couple of prisoners escape and form an awesome heist crew to break into the President’s mansion and recover a stolen family heirloom! This book has a magical talking warhammer, a love priestess who is also a death priestess, a shapeshifting horny unicorn lady, a white boy who is destined to save everyone but needs a LOT of help to do it, and a couple of badass black (or Urujar as the book calls them) ex-soldiers who lead the crew with their wit and skill! The leader is an Urujar woman named Loch who enjoys punching stupid people in the face to solve things and is the brains behind the heist! Look what came in the mail today! #hungergames #balladofsongbirdsandsnakes #suzannecollins I got this beautiful boxset 50% off from Indigo.ca! One of my all time favourite book series! Did you know #tatianamaslany from #orphanblack and #shehulk narrated the #audiobooks for the trilogy? She does an amazing job of all the different voices, and the singing! I also have the audiobook for A Ballad Of but that one is a bit awkward at times, with a male narrator for Snow’s voice reading the parts when Lucy sings in a way that is almost painful to listen to! The story is great but I prefer to read it myself. I read these books aloud to my dad years ago, and we saw the movies in theatres together as they came out! I think Haymitch is my dad’s favourite character. Mine was Peeta back then because of the way he always drops a bomb at the interviews. Now I love Katniss best for the depth and intelligence of her thoughts, and the realistic and relatable portrayal of her #mentalhealth struggles. A Ballad Of Songbirds and Snakes somehow made me both like President Snow better AND hate him more! He’s so much more integral to the creation of the Hunger Games as Katniss knows them than I expected. #currentread is #TheRingandTheCrown by #melissadelacruz I like the world building so far. Merlin and magic are real and he helped England win a war to conquer France and now the English-French Empire rules the world. The crown princess has been chronically ill her whole life and they want to marry her off ASAP to ensure the line, but she just wants to run away with her soldier love! I’m having a little trouble with mixing up all the perspective characters, they each get one chapter in order so it can take 5 chapters before you get back to your favourite. Plus they all have a complicated backstory and motives which I want to keep straight. Really enjoying my #currentread #rook by #sharoncameron its #yadystopian but for once its not in the US, its in Paris or “The Sunken City” because the city collapsed into different levels and the heroine spends her time breaking people out of the lower levels who would be executed by the corrupt authorities and trying not to get caught by a too curious fiance her father assigned her and an obsessed detective.
