We also know that romantic notion that the babies will be with their mothers forever and always is a lie. SeaWorld routinely takes the babies away from the mothers and sends them to other parks, even out of the country. In the wild, babies will never leave their mothers sides, even into adulthood.  SeaWorld lies routinely to its audiences, they have handbooks for the trainers to follow- ones that specifically tell them to evade certain ‘buzzword’ questions, to lie about things such as health questions. No, it is not beautiful. It is sad. It will be sad until Seaworld closes its doors and the orcas are retired to sea pens where they do not have to perform every single day of their lives. 

Sea World openly denies the above facts:

We do not separate killer whale moms and calves. - SeaWorld ”On the rare occasion that a mother killer whale cannot care for the calf herself, we have successfully hand raised and reintroduced the calf. Whales are only moved to maintain a healthy social structure.”

it is only a matter of time before Makani is removed, much to his mother and his dismay, sent all over creation, and will likely end in his demise. Orcas live a lot shorter lives in captivity than they do in the wild. They exhibit extreme stress steryoptypes, such as chewing concrete and breaking and grinding their teeth to nothing. They have their teeth drilled into and the pulp removed, they are fed gelatin because they are dehydrated ( the frozen thawed fish they eat does not contain enough drinkable water for them. Like us, orcas do /not/ drink salt water.)

Captivity is literally killing them. Those who choose to remain ignorant of this fact, who go and enjoy watching these sentient non human persons being forced to jump for fish are supporting the cruelty behind the scenes and right in front of them. This has all been well documented, we have mountains of proof as to why and how orcas do poorly in captivity.

There is not a single fact, sourced document telling us that they do well in captivity. (we have all tried to find such information, but the truth is, it does not exist. )

This orca bled to death for about an hour in front of her baby, after having a fight with another dominant female- something that in the wild would happen next to never, seeing as matriarch pods do not intermix, and dominant females do not have to vy for space with others. Once you go beneath the surface and see the horrors going on, things we’ve documented going on since the beginning of this industry, you will find it much less beautiful and more cruel.

None of the above instances are references to Blackfish, which was the straw that broke the camels back so to speak. this goes beyond and before it. I suggest however that you do watch Blackfish, as well as Lolita: Slave to Entertainment, Whale of a Business, and The Cove.

quick edit: Also, orcas do not beach themselves unless they are sick and dying, aside from a single pod on the whole of the planet earth that does so to capture seals. This is a trained behavior that puts the entire weight of the animal on their fragile organs. Doing this over and over slowly kills them, and led to the gruesom death of beloved Gudrun, who was made to stay beached out of the water for up to 15-30 minutes at a time for photo ops with kids because she actually had a straight dorsal fin. This happened when she was PREGNANT. all those tonnes of weight on her unborn baby killed it, and when they attempted to use a cable to forcibly remove the dead calf, they tore up her insides and she bled to death for hours.  This ‘pretty’ beaching shot is sick and will eventually lead to their deaths.

Current number of known orcas that died in captivity: 160

Not included in the total number given are the 30 unsuccessful pregnancies which didn’t result in a live born calf. Also not included are mortalities during capture operations which were, at least in the years until 1970, another 10 orcas in WA, USA and 1 orca in BC, Canada. Another orca died during the 1992 capture in Argentina. On September 26, 2003, a juvenile female orca died during a capture in Russia. In August 2012 at least one more orca died during a Russian capture. All these included would bring the total death count up to 204 orcas.
