I don't know if I have typed it out on this wretchèd blog already but one of my yearly goals is to spend less than 3.25h a day on my phone. As it turns out, I have overestimated the time I spend looking at my phone and this is actually a really easy goal to achieve. For next year, one of my goals might be to reduce the average time to below 2.5 hours. That should be a much more difficult goal to achieve.

I also have the restriction of not using my laptop after 22h. Occasional exceptions are made, but only understandable ones. And once a week I have no screen time whatsoever after 18h, which I can also complete with unrelenting discipline.

And I enjoy having those screen-free evenings. So when it comes to reducing screen time I think I have reason to be optimistic for the future. I am finishing my twenties on a positive note, as far as that is concerned.

My only gripe with this is that I can only do all-or-nothing. A problem that I also encounter with snacks. I have the discipline not to buy snacks for a full week, but if I do cave and buy something then I will devour it in one sitting. With screens, I can successfully forbid myself from using them altogether but I cannot effortlessly decide to do something productive when I am not strictly forbidding myself to use my phone or laptop.

Yesterday I had a private meeting with one of my students to discuss a possible term paper topic for another course. The professor who teaches that course said that she should come to me for advice, so that happened. And you know, it's so interesting to have reached the stage in my ""career"" where I can meaningfully advise an MA student. Like, I really did have a bunch of ideas and tips to give because I simply have the necessary experience. It's whack.
