​I am honestly so tired of the fandom reducing Dazai to a "helpless, abused child" just because he was under 18 during his time in the Mafia. Forcing Dazai into the role of a naive victim who didn't know any better is a massive disservice to his genius, his agency, and the sheer complexity of his character.

​Here is a breakdown of why Reducing Dazai's actions solely to the abuse cycle strips away his agency and oversimplifies his character.and why we need to stop altering his reality just to make ourselves feel better.

​1. Full Awareness & Stripping the "Helpless Child" Narrative

​To claim Dazai was just a lost, traumatized teenager who didn't understand the weight of his actions is an insult to his intelligence. Age alone does not define maturity, especially not for someone like Dazai. He is a genius who plans multiple steps ahead, manipulates adults with ease, and predicts human behavior with terrifying accuracy.

​Calculated Cruelty: When Dazai abused and broke Akutagawa, it wasn't some "reactionary cycle of trauma" or teenage confusion. It was a fully conscious, calculated decision.

​He made deliberate choices with a level of awareness uncommon for someone his age, meaning his age alone cannot absolve him of responsibility.

​2. Mori & Dazai: Mutual Fear, Not Exploitation

​The fandom loves to paint Mori as this grooming predator and Dazai as his helpless prey, but their dynamic was far more dangerous:

​Mori was Terrified of Dazai: Mori (the man who literally assassinated the previous Boss in front of Dazai) did not see a lost child; he saw a looming existential threat to his throne. Sacrificing Odasaku wasn't about "punishing" Dazai—it was a defensive, preemptive strike by Mori to force Dazai out of the Mafia before Dazai inevitably overthrew and killed him.

​Pre-existing Nihilism: Mori didn't "ruin" Dazai. Dazai entered the Mafia with his pitch-black, nihilistic worldview already fully formed. He joined because he was looking for a reason to live in a world of death. The Mafia was a "comfortable" place where he could thrive; he was never a helpless victim dragged into it against his will.

​3. Odasaku’s Will: Dazai's core nature remained largely the same what changed was the direction in which he chose to use it.

​Dazai leaving the Mafia was not some moral awakening. He didn't suddenly realize the Mafia was "evil" or that he had been a victim of its system.

​A Promise, Not a Redemption: Dazai left solely because of his promise to Odasaku—the only person who ever truly understood him.

​Odasaku's final words to him say it all: "Since both good and evil are equally meaningless to you, choose to be on the side of good." This is a direct acknowledgment that Dazai’s inner darkness is permanent and deeply rooted. Joining the Armed Detective Agency wasn't a "spiritual cleansing" or a change in his core nature; it was simply Dazai redirecting his dark, static nature toward a different output because a friend asked him to.

​4. The Verdict: Dazai vs. Akutagawa

​You cannot put Dazai and Akutagawa in the same boat.

​Akutagawa is genuinely lost, desperate, and psychologically broken struggling to find his own value.

​Dazai is a brilliant, morally gray character. His appeal lies in his absolute awareness of his own darkness and his accountability for it—not in being a helpless victim of his environment.

​Altering Reality: Why "Love is Blind" When it Comes to Our Favorite Characters

​Which brings us to the real question: If Dazai’s autonomy and darkness are this explicitly written, why is there such a strong urge in the fandom to rewrite him into a tragic, helpless victim?

​Let's be fair: Dazai fans aren’t looking at him through naive, rose-colored glasses most of them know and fully acknowledge that his actions, especially toward Akutagawa, were harsh and wrong. However, as the saying goes, "love is blind."

​When a dark, complex character like Dazai becomes your "Favorite Character," but his actions directly clash with your real-life moral principles, a psychological conflict occurs. To ease this tension and make him fit our real-world values, we start "altering his reality." We try to soften his darkness, framing him purely as a "survivor" or a "helpless victim" who had no other choice, just to make our love for him feel morally comfortable.

​Embrace the Darkness

​But honestly? The best way to love a character is to embrace their dark atmosphere fully!

​I absolutely love seeing fans who adore their favorite characters while proudly embracing and imposing their darkness. Dazai himself was never a quiet, tragic victim; he was incredibly boastful and proud of his dark intellect! He literally called himself a "demon" and loved to show off, brag, and dramatically flex his power and cruelty. He honestly gives off major "edgy teenager trying to rule the high school" vibes and that is exactly what makes him entertaining

​What breaks my heart the most about the confrontation between Akutagawa and Gin in the BEAST universe is that their love for each other is incredibly immense, yet it’s the exact thing that tears them apart. It is not a one-sided devotion; it’s a mutual, deeply tangled bond of two siblings willing to ruin themselves just to keep the other safe.

​For Akutagawa, Gin is his only anchor to humanity. The pure desperation in his physical breakdown, the way he craves her warmth, and his frantic tears prove that he isn't driven by a mere sense of duty he loves her with every fiber of his being. He would burn the entire world down just to hold her hand again. But his tragedy is that he only knows how to express love through his "beastly" nature through violence, destruction, and elimination of threats.

​And that is exactly why Gin pushes him away, making her feelings so devastatingly complex. Gin is the only person in the entire world who knew Akutagawa before he became a monster. She is the only one who saw the vulnerable, hurting human in him before everyone else labeled him a beast. Because she loves that human side of him so deeply, she cannot bear to watch it get completely consumed by hatred and vengeance. Her coldness isn't a rejection of her brother; it’s a desperate, heartbreaking act of protection. She sacrifices her own freedom to stay in the Mafia, willingly becoming the villain in his eyes and bearing the agony of saying goodbye, all to ensure that he can live in the light of the Agency. ​Honestly, I need to vent because damn you, Dazai. Dazai is absolutely twisted for exploiting this. He took the purest, most sacred bond between these two and used it as a psychological weapon to break them.

​They are two souls speaking the same language of love but through incompatible actions. Akutagawa wants to destroy everything to save her, while Gin wants to destroy herself to save him. Even when she says she can't go with him, every bitter word she speaks is wrapped in a profound, heartbreaking love. They are looking at each other through a glass wall of trauma and manipulation, entirely devoted, yet permanently separated

For someone who refuses to be touched, who views the world with nothing but cold violence- this hug was his entire soul screaming for the only warmth he ever knew.

Mikaela Hyakuya

I'm obsessed with exactly three characters, no more and no less, and Mika was the first one. What makes this even funnier is that before Seraph of the End, I used to say all the time that I would never like the typical blond anime boy with blue eyes. They're everywhere, everyone loves them, and I genuinely thought my taste would never be like that. Then Mika showed up and suddenly the first fictional man I ever fell in love with was a blond boy with blue eyes. At that point I honestly don't know what to say.

Then there was Subaru. At first I thought it was just a small crush, but I ended up falling hard. To this day I still haven't gone through all of his routes, yet I'm still completely attached to him. Apparently I don't even need to know every single detail or see every scene to get obsessed with a character.

And then Akutagawa happened. The biggest plot twist of my life because I started Bungou Stray Dogs completely obsessed with Chuuya. I genuinely thought Chuuya would be my favorite forever. Then somewhere along the way I discovered that true love had other plans for me. I still adore Chuuya, by the way.

Note: I was so obsessed with Chuuya that I had a note on my phone's home screen with the episode number, minute, and season in which he appeared, and I would watch and replay it every day like it was a mandatory duty.

As for Mika, I don't think he's a perfect character because I love him. I love him because he's a perfect character. And NO, that's not an opinion. That's a fact indisputable point

Mikaela Hyakuya has this terrifying, razor-sharp intuition the ability to see people for who they truly are and see right through their masks. This isn’t just my observation it’s confirmed by Takaya Kagami himself through Mahiru Hiiragi.Simply put, if we want to know the true nature of any character, we just have to look at how Mika views them. Of course, setting aside the fact that he gets annoyed by humans in general, it’s interesting how he acts naturally with Shinoa’s squad, unlike his stance with Guren or Saito though he is natural with Crowley.

The best proof? When he was just 8 years old, he made Mahiro tremble because he was about to reveal her true self. She had to immediately start thinking about Guren just so she could force a genuine smile, because she knew that if she kept up that fake, deceptive smile the one that fools almost everyone else Mika would see right through it and expose her!

One of the things I admire most about Mikaela is his incredible strength he never burdens others with his own problems. Even when he was being abused by his vile father, he never complained; he endured it all, especially since his father would only hit him when his mother wasn’t around. Even throughout his agonizing life in Sanguinem, he never once complained in front of the other children. It’s hard to grasp, but even after he’d already had his blood drawn at the designated time like all the other kids, he would still go and let Ferid drink from him even more and he never complained, never tried to fight it, and never wanted anyone from his family to share in the cruelty he was suffering.

​He endured the constant blood loss and exhaustion just to make those he loved happy; his family was everything to him. For Mika, just seeing his family smile was enough to make him forget his own fatigue.

And moving on to something many people miss: Mika is fully aware that he was one of the best 'Seraph of the End' experiments. This is the exact reason Krul kept him around, because she taught him everything they were doing to them at the orphanage. Yet, he never spoke of it, not even once. People often think he’s being oblivious or that he just forgot that he is a Seraph experiment just like them, but that’s not it Mika never sat around feeling sorry for himself or breaking down, and he never made it a topic of conversation.

To get back to the sheer amount of 'ideality' Mika possesses no matter how much he rejects Yuu’s reckless or dumb ideas, he rarely actually stops him in the end. He knows that if Yuu is determined to do something, he’s going to do it regardless of what anyone says. You can see it in how he just had to let go, even when it came to Yuu’s obsession with reviving others or his dangerous Seraph training.

Even that day when Yuu told them, 'Take me, discover my memories,' just so they could save Shinoa... Mika knew perfectly well that the situation was incredibly dangerous, but he saw how determined Yuu was! Mika was torn in that moment, left to think: either he saves Yuu and abandons Shinoa, or he lets Yuu go to save Shinoa and ultimately, he chose to let him be.

He has a big, kind, and very gentle heart, but at the right times! He doesn't have that 'typical, annoying kindness' like Naruto’s friend who befriended the person who killed his family, and he didn't act like Emma from The Promised Neverland saying, 'I'll take all the children with me to escape!

No, his kindness and gentleness are rooted in rationality. Even after becoming a vampire, his kindness and gentleness never changed; he is, quite literally, the kindest character in the story that is a direct quote from Kagami.

​He possesses a charisma that makes everyone around him love him, want to talk to him, and praise him involuntarily that’s according to Mahiro. His personality is not weak at all; he endured the thirst for blood for four years, and Krul told him it won't help, all so he wouldn't become a real monster because he was terrified of this!

Even when he was blaming Yuu for running away and leaving him while he was still alive, he was actually blaming himself for not being able to protect his family. He loves his family so much and has the ability to adapt to any environment meaning his family threw him from the car to the orphanage, to Sanguinem, to the life of livestock, to a vampire, and finally to a vampire who associates with humans.

I mean, Mika’s beauty is seen from afar, and he can distinguish a person from many people from his childhood. That’s not me saying it that’s from the Mahiro.

Even with Mika's lack of feelings, he still has a few exceptions like his deep devotion to his only family, Yuu, and the kindness he holds for those who treated him well, like Ferido. The hatred and spite he feels toward Ferid may have dimmed a little, but in many of his actions, you can feel they stem from actual emotions, even if it's supposed to be impossible for a vampire

But Mika simply knows what is right and what he is supposed to do. He is constantly trying to fight the lack of feelings within him, and this is very clear.

​He also still harbors a few feelings for Shinoa and Guren from his human days because he met them during his childhood. Of course, his feelings toward Guren were bad, mostly because Shinuoa told him that Guren was a total pervert, and Mika actually believed him

Honestly, every time I talk about one point, I feel like I drift into another because there is just so much to say about him.

Of course, we can’t forget the most beautiful, best, and most iconic relationship in Seraph of the End: the relationship between Krul and Mika. Even though their bond started as a symbiotic one like a biology lesson come to life it turned out to be so gentle and beautiful.

In the end, Krul was protecting Mika and his family, even though they were supposed to be killing each other. Their relationship is built on a level of mutual trust Mika trusts Krul, and I bet he’s the only one she truly trusts.

More importantly, there’s the respect Mika has for her as his savior. He may have refused to live at first, but she gave him that life, and because of her, he stayed alive. It’s almost instinctive for a vampire to hate everyone around them or harbor negative emotions, but Mika is one of those rare exceptions he never hated Krul for turning him.

​He respects her so much, and honestly, it’s just so cute I’m obsessed with him! He once lost control and drank directly from her neck, and he was apologizing to her with such politeness, even asking her if it was okay for him to have more blood! My heart literally cannot take it.

And we can’t forget one of their most important moments: when Krul was being tortured in the sun, Mika turned away because he couldn't bear to see her like that. Their ability to understand each other just through a look is incredible!

Like that time the filthy Ferid tried to attack her, and Mika was ready to save her, even though she refused.

I used to think it was impossible for a character to be truly perfect, and even if a perfect character did exist, I thought they would be boring, unrealistic, or obviously favored by the author. Then there was Mikaela Hyakuya. Mika breaks every rule I thought existed when it comes to writing characters. He's one of the very few characters I can confidently call perfect without worrying about someone showing up with a scene, a panel, or a moment that proves otherwise, because there simply isn't one. There are no flaws. Literally none. In fact, some of the "flaws" I've seen people mention on Twitter genuinely made me laugh because they always end up sounding like compliments

What I love about Akutagawa is that he’s purely driven by his own principles. People often mistake his confidence for empty talk, but it’s really just his absolute resolve. Look at the ship incident the Mafia ordered him to capture the tiger alive, but he didn't care; he did what he believed was right. He refuses to let orders or circumstances limit him.

​That’s exactly why Fukuchi tried to recruit him. The 'Hunting Dogs' are the elite of the elite they don’t just recruit anyone, and they even modify their members' bodies to push past human limits. Yet, even in the middle of a death match where Akutagawa was trying to kill him, Fukuchi was clearly impressed. He saw that rare, 'hardened' determination in Akutagawa the same way Jouno recognized Kunikida’s unwavering discipline.

​Akutagawa is the type who, once he makes a decision, sees it through to the end regardless of the consequences. He was fully prepared to fight, knowing their fate was sealed. Fukuchi saw that raw hunger and ironclad willpower qualities that perfectly suit the 'Hunting Dogs,' regardless of his own ulterior motives

Actually, when I mention their body modifications, I’m referring to how they undergo specific enhancements to surpass human limitations it’s a detail mentioned by the 'Hunting Dogs' themselves in the manga that many people tend to overlook. It makes me so proud of Akutagawa; even with an organization like that, where members are scientifically enhanced to be peak-level soldiers, they still had their eyes on him. They chose to recruit someone who is physically 'weaker' compared to them because they saw that his worth is far beyond just physical strength.

Every member brought something compelling to the story. But after Fukuchi's betrayal and the collapse of everything they stood for, I couldn't help wishing they had remained around a little longer.
