Sofilophisaurus

The Void Serpent: She/her. Formally called She-of-Chaos. There’s not much I wanna add about her that I didn't say last time I posted her. She’s a god! She’s blue! She is the narrator of the story, though she also has a much more direct role to play.

Lucero Kaminaga: They/She. Lucero allows a number of outcasts to live in their mansion for reasons they will not fully disclose. They seem happy that their home is no longer empty, though they weren’t prepared for the dangers that come with housing a superhero team.

Bonus Facts: Lucero wasn’t always in the title of the story! It has always been St. Whoever’s Home for Freaks (aka St. Freaks), but who this saint originally was is lost to the sands of my mind. For a while it was a mean old lady with almost no story relevance, so when I started my new draft it seemed appropriate to elevate Cero to the role of titular bitchular, particularly since they have been housing the Freaks on and off throughout my drafts.

Kamari Baal: He/Him. Kamari is the leader of the Freaks and outwardly the most normal. He’s even gone to college! His natural charisma and human appearance tend to put others at ease, even after he’s used his powers to summon a two-ton un-dead Styracosaurus. While he can technically revive any dead thing he touches, he tends to prefer summoning his dino Ruby and fighting villains head on. With a sword. Did I mention he’s a big nerd?

Bonus Facts: Kamari has had the most name changes and the most power changes of all my characters. He was even a werewolf once, though that was really stepping on Indigo’s toes. However, the very first version of him was just Guy With Dinosaur and man if I didn’t really miss his fucking dinosaur. I should draw her too.

Li Xue: He/Him. Xue was in an accident ten years ago that split him in half. During the day, he lives an ordinary life in whatever city China alongside his fiancé Jiayi. At night, he awakens in a shadowy, leonine body in wherever the fuck America and helps fight villains with the Freaks. His shadow body is intangible, but he can effect the world around him by causing hallucinations, making people drowsy, and invading dreams. Despite his intimidating appearance, he is a kind soul who prioritizes protecting people over everything else.

Bonus Facts: Xue is a new character that hasn’t been in this story previously. That said, his power set is a combination of a couple of characters from a different story of mine that I have (probably!) abandoned. Coincidentally, one of the characters in that other story that I did not intentionally draw from was also lion themed, although Xue is inspired by Chinese guardian lions rather than the animal itself.

Cagehead/ Birdie: She/Her. Cagehead has a cage for a head. This makes life very difficult for her. She was abandoned as a baby and spent most of her life fending for herself. Though still wary of other people, she is surprisingly happy and optimistic. Birdie can see out of the eye on her doorknob and is very in tune to vibrations. She communicates through ASL since she is deaf and mute. In addition to general cage-headedness, she can shoot long, grasping chains from the bottom of her head. To combat her scary vibes, she sometimes keeps a bright pink stuffed rabbit inside her face. Whether that actually makes her less scary is up to interpretation.

Bonus Facts: I clearly hate myself. Sure, object heads are fun but a CAGE?? If I ever have to draw her again I will throw up. Birdie is another new character, though she is a spiritual successor to a different character that I cut because her powers never felt quite unique or freak-y enough for this story. (Her powers were literally just glowing btw)

Dandelion/ Aisha Khan: She/her. Dandelion was created by a secret sect of mad scientists with a passion for creating human-animal hybrids. Dandelion herself is a hybrid of a yellow headed water monitor, eyelash viper, and black wildebeest. To make her more dragon-like, all of her blood was replaced with fire. Ouch. Dandy was by far the most successful, and most powerful, of her lab-made siblings, and they are not happy that she managed to escape.

Bonus Facts: My special little baby precious child. She is sooooo OC I created when I was fourteen, and we LOVE THAT ABOUT HER. If you can believe it, she used to be worse. Like, in addition to all her above powers and being made in a lab, she could regrow limbs and was practically immortal. She spent her free time as a vigilante killing abusers and rescuing their (mostly child) victims, who she then had living in a giant all child society underground. Like, go off girlie, but I don’t think you should leave those traumatized kids alone to run their own society. Also, because she was my favorite, I routinely put her through all sorts of torturous situations that she would then break free from and wreak havoc. Ah, the mind of an angsty teen. She still gets a little torture, as a treat.

Heron: It/its. Heron is Lucero’s employee and serves as the “guy in the chair” for the Freaks. It is a very strong advocate for its rights as a non-organic individual and can sometimes come off as disdainful of humans. Beyond helping the Freaks out, it serves as Lucero’s bodyguard and is quite protective of them.

Bonus Facts: Heron is the only new character with no ties to any other characters I’ve made (so far), so there’s not too much to say about it! I think I was inspired by Chilchuck from Dungeon Meshi when I came up with its personality.

Indigo/ Barghest: He/She. Indigo was once the sibling that Dandelion was closest to. She always did her best to protect her younger sister from the horrors of the lab they lived in. Now, years after Dandy’s escape, Indigo has been sent to hunt her down. He does not seem keen on showing mercy, and the kind sister Dandelion once knew may be gone forever. Indigo has a giant schnauzer head attached to his human body. His blood is purple. Her creation was not as successful as her sister's, and her immune system is actively fighting against her.

Bonus Facts: Indy used to be a talking wolf with human hands. I like to think that this is still true.

Zuhra Khan: She/her. Zuhra is Dandelion’s biological sister. Once Zuhra discovers her relationship to Dandy, she is determined to reconnect with the family that was kidnapped before she was born. Dandelion is reluctant at first but eventually softens to her family and reclaims her birth name. Zuhra and her parents emigrated from Pakistan a couple years before the story starts.

Bonus Facts: Zuhra has always been Aisha’s sister, but the route to that sisterhood has always been complicated. For a long time she was one of the kids Aisha rescued. Then Indigo and Aisha found her as an orphan, except Zuhra wasn’t really an orphan and had a loving family she somehow got separated from. This time around, it felt simplest (and made the most sense for her character) for her to be Aisha’s long-lost biological sister.

Marin Baal: She/her. Kamari’s dead older sister. She is eternally stuck at seventeen, looking exactly as she did the day she died of hypothermia. Though she was once grateful for the chance to see her brother again, she is now tired of the half-life she is living and has grown resentful of his continual summoning of her spirit. She is ready to rest.

Bonus Facts: Marin used to be alive and also have a dinosaur, like her brother. I genuinely don’t remember how or when she became a ghost. I’m so sorry Marin you have every right to resent your brother (and me, your evil creator).

The Cat: He/Him. The god of death. Kamari keeps seeing him, though he has yet to realize the Cat is anything but ordinary.

Bonus Facts: Kibby Cat

The Oracle: She/her. A cult leader and CEO who claims to be able to predict the future. Her true body is a red snake, but she possesses a human host to maintain her influence and control. She is on her third generation of bodies.

Bonus Facts: The Oracle used to be an orb.

Shipova: Any pronouns. A member of the Conclave of Fae, a group of supers who have cut themselves off from the rest of society. As a result of thousands of years of isolation, their powers are many and strong. Shipova has taken interest in the Freaks and hopes to convince them to join the Conclave.

Bonus Facts: Shipova is based on a character who used to be Dandelion’s boyfriend, back when she was straight. He was actually her second boyfriend, the first being the most boring man alive. Ah, the troubles of creating characters as a closeted lesbian. Shipova is a delightful weirdo now, which I think is an improvement, even if she is no longer with the main crew.
