About Last Nightâs Fight
11/8/19
We had a fight last night. Again. Every time we fight, I canât help but think here we go again; this is all we ever do; this doesnât work; how is this going to last. Which is my worst tendencies coming to the forefront because of the heightened emotions. And honestly, we fight once every couple of weeks. Usually when I am feeling overwhelmed. Not that it is all my fault or that I will take all of the blame. But from my perspective, it is all my fault because I am the one who canât keep calm and even and steady when I am upset or emotion-filled. You said recently that I am a roller coaster. But you also said that you are along for the ride and donât want to get off.
Last night, I was faced with yet another thing that will detract and distract from your career goals. Your family dynamic is different from mine in some big ways. What I was trying to get at was that help is given to you without being asked for. You havenât really had a chance to fail because they refuse to stand back and let you. Having a support system and something to fall back on is different than not being able to fall at all. They ask and you give without question, which is okay for the most part. That is family. But throw yourself to the side in order to help them even if it is to your detriment. Thatâs all fine and good when there is not another person involved. But there is. You donât take me into account when they are involved. I am trying to build a life with you and be a part of your support system, but it is difficult when you are making decisions with them without me. What you do effects me in ways that you donât see. It effects our partnership and our future. I was trying to express my frustration at how they place these expectations on you to succeed but then throw things in your way that pulls your focus from what will help you succeed. I am not in a partnership with your parents. I will listen to their concerns and wishes, but it is not fair to recruit me to their cause of fixing you and your problems like we are a team when you and I should be the ones working together to get through yours and our problems. I didnât like the idea of them removing their support or being upset or whatever consequence comes from the deadline related ultimatum of you not succeeding or not taking the steps they want you to take. Their ideas about success are not necessarily right. They donât see the leaps and bounds you are making to work through the mental struggle of trying to make steps in your career. And maybe it is because you and them see it as an investment kind of thing. But I donât. And their anxiety and pushing, and pulling me into it makes it feel like I am a failure for not getting you on track or making steps or something. Like I have to be your keeper just as much as they are trying to be. That is a lot of pressure. Especially in a matter in which I have no control. I canât force you to take steps any more than they can. I am scared that if you listen to me or try to stand up to them and ask them to back off, then you will end up in the same boat as your sister is which is not speaking to your mother and her saying unkind things about you to others because she is upset with you, such as taking your sister out of the trust. I know that kind of thing would hurt you. I donât think it is fair. There is a level of consequence involved in your family dynamic that you donât see the same way I do. And I feel like you donât want them to stop or back off because you donât know how to do it without them, and you donât want to try. There is a level of independence from them that I see you lacking. May be it is because of your prior âfailuresâ or your insecurity or your fear; you donât want to be more independent from them. May be you donât know how anymore. This isnât out of nowhere. I know you feel that way. But I felt this a year ago when they bought a car for you without a conversation or discussion about it. With you or with us. Yeah, us. it is a decision that effected both of us. OUR lives. OUR finances. You talk about me being family. They say they love me. But I am not being treated like that when it comes to these kinds of decisions. I am not being taken into account. You having a car loan to pay off effects my finances. They didnât think about it like that. They didnât think about you having to help pay rent or utilities or living expenses.
The overwhelming emotion from last night and right now is fear and frustration. I am scared of being in this alone. I am scared of feeling like I am the only one who thinks about our finances and spending. I am scared of not being able to make small decisions for me or us or even plan for future decisions because I canât rely on your income or career path. I am frustrated that all we talk about is how much new steps in your career are going to cost but then nothing ever happens. I am frustrated that you are moving forward mentally but they donât see that as the huge step that it is. I am frustrated that their feelings about your career influence mine because they expect me to be able to make you do things that they havenât been able to make you do. It is creating all of this anxiety inside me about money and our future on top of what I already have going on in my head about everything else. Having your parents reinforce the idea that we canât get married before you have your career on track makes me feel all sorts of things. I am already trying to ignore the feeling of not moving forward in my life and our life and what not. But to have people outside of us comment on it makes me hyperaware of the situation and their opinions and influence over you and your life and in connection, my life. It makes me feel like I have handed over partial control of my life without wanting to or being asked. It was just taken. On top of that, I am not even legally bound to you. I am struggling with even trying to have myself have control over my life and now I have handed some of that control over to someone else that is not even a part of this partnership. It is supposed to be me and you. We make decisions together about OUR lives TOGETHER. Input from outside sources is acceptable. But not outside sources making those decisions for us and in turn for me without my request for it or consent to it. I understand that you are their son, but that does not give them the right to make decisions about OUR lives. Especially without me being involved in those decisions. Â
