so called free thinkers when jesus himself descends from the heavens and tells you that he needs your help and you’re his only hope to stop the destruction of the world, and you agree because it’s literal jesus and he says that the road will be hard and long because they’ve been monitoring the heavens and he will be detected if you traverse too close to civilization and you say okay because you’ve already agreed and really what else could you say? so you help him steal a couple of horses from the farm that you always drove by when visiting your remote family, and you tell him about them, and he laughs and tells his own stories, and you steal the horses and its the most exhilarated you’ve ever felt in your life, and the farmer’s chasing after you and shouting and all you can do is laugh because of the adrenaline, and you look at jesus and you know that you will never regret this day, not when you’ve never felt so alive, and he looks at you with so much hope and his gaze warms you down to your fingertips, and you go home and dig some old camping gear out of your attic, and you remember your childhood using it, and you wonder if your mother would aprove, and you ask jesus this and he says he watched over her when you were young, and he says that she watched you play outside with so much love in her eyes that he doesn’t think she could do anything *but* love you fully, and your eyes water, and you say okay, and you start riding east on horseback, through the forests to avoid any technology that could find you, and you travel in silence until your body begins to visibly ache, unused to riding horses, and he tells you it’s okay to stop for the night. you set up the tents, you start the fire, and you talk, and a wonderful friendship blooms. over the next few weeks you learn more and more about each other, and sometimes he looks at you with this glimmer in his eyes that you can’t identify, and it feels like he’s looking into your soul, and you know that your eyes mirror his as you try to look into his soul as well, until his gaze turns into something so fragile and tentatively loving that you can’t help but wonder if he doesn’t feel how you do, laying awake in your tent at night, looking over his sleeping form. one day, in front of the fire, sharing a flask of whiskey that you carefully ventured into town to steal for the adrenaline rush and the warm look in jesus’s eyes when he sees you filled with such light energy, and you drink it because it’s a cold night and the whiskey warms you from the inside the way only two things in life truly can, and you’re laughing, and the stars are so bright, and you turn to him to tell another joke, but you fall silent as the traces of laughter leave his face, and he’s looking at you with such intensity that you almost think he’s about to kill you, and he’s looking at you, and he’s looking at you, and you try to make a joke to dispel the tension, and he’s brushing your hair back, and he’s leaning toward you, and you lean toward him, and you let him warm you up the way only two things in this world truly can, because what else could you really do? and when you reach your destination, and you save the world, he asks you to come back to the heavens with him, and you say no, because what would your poor mother think, and he laughs, and he says that he can wait for you near the gates, because the lifespan of a human is so dhort compared to eternity, and he’s waited for thing much less important than you for much longer, and he’s waited walks into the distance, and you go home, and you feel fulfilled, and you hope he knows that you’re waiting for him, too. take that “free thinkers”
