because fire and blood has a better sense of what the setting ultimately turned out to be, it actually ends up better than the main series at structuring its themes and payoffs. it does hurt for not being able to be inside of characters' heads (at all), but the story itself feels a lot more solid and consistently interesting
that's not to say that it's the better book, but it is to say that, in general outline, it's the more interesting story, if that makes sense
that said, I think that's kind of the pattern with my taste in stories even outside of asoiaf. I also think children of húrin is in many ways competitive with the proper lotr novels' storyline in concept, and it wasn't written (well, you know, asterisk here) with the scope of middle earth in mind, for obvious reasons

lots of writers continually refine their personal set of archetypes to the point where you can get a more blunt and honest look into later characters through looking at their predecessors
it's just that this is INCREDIBLY easy with nasu's writing because he had a perfectly-attuned partner at his side who would read a paragraph from his new book and go "oh that's the guy from that other story, I will draw him again"
for example, it's immediately striking how takeuchi split the original araya souren design's elements in half to create kotomine and zouken
still can't get over how, out of Takeuchi's Azaka designs, the older one became Illya and the younger one became Rin
