Yeah I get you anon, there was a heavy trend there for a bit of Shane -> Boston fics because it was floated around as a "solution" to the whole Ottawa problem and like, tbc, I do enjoy a ton of fics with that premise. I do think they're fun so this is my throwing up my hands here and begging people not to read this as me criticizing fic in general or any specific fic. I love fic I love fic authors I love the Boston stories

That said I do think the trend is funny, how Boston is written as this paradise when canonically Ilya says it sucked lol. And all the Cliff headcanons and stuff, it's just a completely alternate fanon at this point. Which is fine, I support people having fun, but as you say---we just reinvented the Centaurs. It is just TLG with more Shangst / Shwump (and less Ilyangst) lol. People want to make the little bottom boy suffer and they want him to be comforted by his big strong top

I also said this once about the Americanization thing. I think a lot of (presumably) American authors are a lot more capable and comfortable imagining a life in Boston, which in the American imagination has a clear identity and landmarks, than Ottawa which is a complete hole in people's minds or Montreal, which has this vaguely foreign sheen to it (they speak French?). It's again one of those things where it's the trend rather than any specific fics, like I can't think of any Ilya -> Montreal fics (please rec 'em if you've got 'em) and I'd love that, tbh, I would really love reading a Montreal fic from someone who really knows the city

(This also reminds me of a Reid comment---I read The Shots You Take recently and it was so beautifully grounded in being in Nova Scotia and you could feel her love for that place on the page and I wish we'd gotten that kind of place setting in the GCU. I think that would have made a huge difference for the fandom's perception of Montreal especially, because Montreal is a fucking awesome city)

I really do think Bond adores it when Q lectures him, nags him, bosses him around, and just generally oversteps his boundaries re: a 'normal' quartermaster-agent relationship.

I think Bond would love it if Q butted in and started trying to run Bond's personal life, manage Bond's finances, or pester Bond about his routine medical/dental care.

I think people observing this dynamic from the outside would expect Bond to hate it and resist it with all his might. They'd expect him to make Q's life a living hell for even attempting this.

But I think that, while Bond would definitely be Performatively Uncooperative about the whole thing, he'd actually be quietly ecstatic every time Q did this. He'd lap up the attention and come back for more! He'd try to find new ways to bring various (dysfunctional) parts of his life to Q's attention, just so Q could start bossing him around and trying to tell him what to do about this part of his life, too!
