And that’s just what she did, she survived. On her own. In the middle of nowhere. A few kilometers away from Niima Outpost, where she gained her daily rations from her employer, Unkar Plutt.

Rey was a scavenger. And as a scavenger, she often had to venture on her own to find worthwhile parts to exchange for her rations. She used to have someone show her what she needed to do, they even helped her, but once she realized that they were taking most of the profit, she cut off their partnership.

That was months ago. And now Rey was all alone and marching to a downed star destroyer to earn her living.

It was a boring life, but there was nothing she can do about it, so she persevered. She needed to be alive for when her family came for her.

She needed to live for them.

The Force had an odd sense of humor. Honestly, Anakin didn’t know what to make of it. One second he was dead and with Obi-Wan, the next he was a dog.

More specifically, a newborn puppy with five siblings squirming around him.

On a blanket.

A blanket that was meant to protect them from the sand that covered the ground.

It seems he’s doomed to a life on a desert planet no matter what species he’s born as.

Those first months in his new life was excruciatingly boring and the only good thing about it, in his opinion, was that dogs spent a lot less time in infancy than humans. Once he was old enough to walk without toppling over, he wandered the local area. If he wandered too far, his new mother would pick him up with her mouth and take him back to their blanket.

If nothing else, she seemed to at least care about them.

He wasn’t sure what breed of dog he was (dogs were never a priority in his original life) but he knew that he was covered in black fur, with the exception of his legs, which were all covered in dark brown fur. Yeah, the Force really had it out for him, it seemed.

Once he was, what he assumed, a little over two months old, he sneaked away from the blanket and ventured into the vast desert on his own.

He had to admit, it wasn’t his most thought out plan. Maybe it was his reckless nature forcing itself through, maybe it was the sheer mind numbing boredom that made him act, whichever did it was a huge pain in his ass.

So, here he was, lost in an unknown desert planet (he knew it wasn’t Tatooine, there was no second sun in the sky and he couldn’t feel the desert in his bones. Tatooine always followed you, even into a new life) with no water and very little food that he has managed to kill.

Puppies didn’t have very sharp teeth, it seemed. Not as sharp as their adult counterparts, anyway.

He didn’t mind dying so soon into this life, but he wasn’t going to seek it or give up so easily.

It seemed he never could lie down and die, regardless of his own will to live.

The black fur was going to be the death of him, he could see it now. At least the Force gave him the small mercy of having short fur.

The sand in between his paw pads was even more annoying than it being in between his toes.

If nothing else, this fate definitely guaranteed that he was remorseful of his past crimes. Karma was a bitch, no pun intended.

“Well, the odds certaining are stacked against you, aren’t they?”

Anakin froze in his tracks. He knew that voice, but that was impossible, wasn’t it? With no delay, Anakin turned to face the direction the voice came from only to be confronted by a figure. A ghostly figure of his old Master and best friend, Obi-Wan. Except he looked as old as the day he killed him.

“I gotta say, I think you look better in this body than your original one. Wouldn’t you say so, Anakin?” There. A quirk of mouth and humor in his eyes.

With a sneer, (or as much as a sneer that a two month old puppy could accomplish, anyway. Obi-Wan will never admit it, but the sight was adorable) Anakin barked at Obi-Wan.

Translation: Anakin sassed Obi-Wan, all Obi-Wan heard was a bark.

“This can become a problem.” Obi-Wan’s brows furrowed as he stared at his furry ex-padawan.

Quite honestly, Anakin was frustratingly unconcerned about the predicament. He was a dog, an apparently Force Sensitive dog, but a dog nonetheless. He had no big expectations for communication.

Beyond this.

Obi-Wan watched as Anakin dragged his front paw in the sand. It seems like whatever happened during their brief together as ghosts has left little to no impact on him in this new life.

He was expecting that, honestly, it still didn’t ease the slight sting in his chest. Which was, quite frankly, ridiculous. He was dead, he shouldn’t be so affected.

Well, Anakin always did have that effect on him, it seems.

Obi-Wan was dragged out of his thoughts by a second bark. Obi-Wan looked at the sloppy message that the floppy-eared pup left him. He almost wished he hadn’t bothered.

Of course you would be a zoophile. Just try and restrain yourself, I’m a minor.

Obi-Wan glared at Anakin with the force of a thousand suns. The furry menace just sat there and wagged his tail, smugly.

“That is wrong on so many levels. Please don’t make such jokes again, or you might find yourself without companionship.”

That seemed to stop his cheer. Anakin growled at him and went to write something else. Hopefully, something more appropriate.

Regardless, it was an empty threat and they both knew it. Anakin was just too easy to aggravate.

Oh, how missed him.

Obi-Wan took this opportunity to study the puppy before him. Anakin looked to be around a third of a meter in height and covered in short black fur. His legs, ear and tail tips, and the fur around his right eye seemed to be the only exceptions, as the fur there was a dark brown. It seemed he kept his blue eyes from his former life, and they still suited him well. His ears were currently floppy, but he predicted that they would perk up within the next month or so. Judging by the size of his paws, Anakin still had much growing to do.

Although unfamiliar with the breed, Obi-Wan was sure that Anakin would be a big dog. While observing the paws, he realized that they had stopped moving, signaling that the message was finished.

What are you doing here?

“Do try to contain your enthusiasm, Anakin, it’s unbecoming. I am here to help you in your new life. Apparently, I, too, have to be punished.”

Anakin gave a little huff, but abandoned his spot to sit in front of Obi-Wan.

“I don’t know what you’re expecting, it’s not as if I can touch you.”

Anakin stood up and began to write another message, this one shorter than the last.

Water?

“Ah, yes, there is a source near here. However, it isn’t a natural one, it’s the stored water of an inhabitant. Luckily for you, you’re a cute wittle puppy dog and she is a lonely little girl, I’m sure she’ll be more willing to give you a drink than to kill and eat you.” Not to mention she’s crucial to your redemption.

That thought, however, went unsaid.

When Rey got to her home after exchanging her hard work for rations, she was expecting an empty place. She lived alone, after all.

She was definitely not expecting to come home to a blue glowing old man and some small creature sniffing around the place.

She grabbed hold of her large stick and moved into a fighting stance. The old man turned towards her, the creature ignored her and kept sniffing around.

“Who are you?! What are you doing in my shelter?! I don’t have anything, just leave!”

The old man held up his arms in what seemed to be a peaceful manner.

“Please, we mean you no harm. My name is Obi-Wan and I was just hoping that you could spare some of your water for my friend, here.” He gestured toward the floor. “He’s only a baby and is in dire need. Anything you can spare would be greatly appreciated.”

Rey turned her eyes to look for the creature, only to find it looking at her with big blue eyes and a twitching nose. It looked very cute and cuddly, Rey wanted to hug it. But she knew appearances could be deceiving and held her position.

“Place your weapons on the floor, right now!”

“Miss, I have no weapons.” The old man then lowered his right arm towards the wall and Rey tightened her hold on her weapon. However, the arm simply went straight through the wall, Rey almost dropped her weapon, but she was gaping. “As you can see, I’m actually a ghost. But don’t let that frighten you, I mean you no harm. Neither does my friend for that matter.”

“I-is he a ghost...too?”

The old man chuckled and the creature let out a huff.

“No, no, he is very much among the living. And as such, could really use any water that you can spare, please.”

Rey kept silent. She was still trying to process the situation.

“I think you broke her, Obi-Wan.”

Rey started and looked around in search of the second voice, a much more childish voice.

“Who said that?! Who else is here, old man?! I knew you weren’t to be trusted!”

The old man-ghost-thief-liar looked confused for a second but then his eyes widened and he looked down toward the creature.

“Anakin, did you say something?”

The creature (Anakin?) looked to the old man and opened his mouth to say:

“I said ‘I think you broke her.’ Can you understand me, little girl?”

The creature was looking at her as he asked the question. Rey looked at the man’s face to see if he understood what the creature said. He did not.

Rey nodded her head toward the creature. The old man looked at her with a strange expression. The creature simply wagged it’s tail and stuck it’s tongue out.
