hey. rgu transfeminist anon here sorry itβs been a while! i really liked the post you made abt rgu no home parallels and i have a lot to say abt it myself but. to be honest. i must disagree in some cases abt eunnieβs transness being implicit and βup to interpretationβ elevating the story. i donβt think it needs to be super explicit vocally obviously and in the story itself itβs crafted really well im just kind of sick of appealing to people denying obvious trans themes in a text. i think especially during this time when transmisogyny and transphobia are so rampant it is in fact important to be explicit about these things in our readings and analysis etc. idk maybe iβm just too jaded
hi i'm happy to hear from you!! thank you for bringing this up i totally get what you're saying! in my mind, eunyung's character cannot be divorced from or fully understood without transfemininity. it is unequivocally canon to me, and i feel that the openness with which i talk about eunyung and her relationship with gender and the use of she/her pronouns under all circumstances should make that clear. if you don't think that's been the case, please let me know!
when i talk about implicit writing, i mean it on a very literal level and with the intent to reach out to people who haven't given eunyung's gender any regard. i've found it to be fruitful! multiple people have told me that transfem eunyung wasn't something they had considered before but that it totally makes sense to them!! it can be difficult to pick up on subtext present in such a tightly written narrative, especially for those who don't revisit it and really question everything wanan told us without telling us. so if i can encourage people to give transfem eunyung some thought, i don't mind going about it this way!
there are also some people who see her as transmasc, which is what i really mean by "up to interpretation" tbh. i have no desire to encroach on how they engage with no home in earnest and do not necessarily feel that referring to interpretations as such undermines what i have to say about her gender in any event. as far as people who actively deny trans themes go, i do not post about eunyung with them in mind and truthfully have no patience for engaging with transmisogynists and transphobes period.
i do understand why you feel the way that you do! it is and will always be important to talk about trans stories, characters, and themes!! as far as i'm concerned, eunyung's transness will never not be a part of the conversations i have about βno home πΈ

one of no home's biggest strengths is that wanan LOVES to leave openings for deeper interpretations and headcanons! eunyung hates spring because it symbolizes one of her greatest struggles - growth and new beginnings. she has been told her entire life that she will never change; seeing the world around her begin anew has to inspire some ugly feelings in her. BUT we can take it one step further and give her a spring birthday - the world is changing and she should be too, shouldnβt she.? the symbolism is just tew good to pass up. It also makes the cherry blossom viewing a muchhhhh more cathartic experience
I haven't talked about Atami kun here before but it is a manga i highly recommend. It's a great slice of life about this guy Atami, who is gay!! I say that because it's one of the first things they tell you in the synopsis but the manga isn't really focused on that, at least not too much. It's mostly about him learning how to connect more with people and how to understand them as well, a lot of the manga is him developing relationships with other people. Imo one of the best aspects of it is how...natural and real the dialogue feels. It's a really introspective and reflective manga but the characters are still teenagers and the way they speak and comprehened stuff feels so true to how teenagers would talk.
Another thing i also really like about it is how the author depicts crushes. Because it's not the usual blushing excesively, stuttering and becoming visibly nervous and agitated. Ofc i still love it when it's depicted like that, but in Atami kun crushes are depicted in a more lowkey and less exaggerated way. One of the jokes with Atami is how easily he falls in love but he never reacts like that. Usually he reacts by taking a while to answer, looking at someone for a long period of time, sighing after seeing them or doing something uncharacteristic but subtle. I thought this was just an Atami thing but i've read another one shot by the author and the character there also acted like this, so i guess this is just how they like to portray crushes and romance, which i love.
Anyways yeah, i highly recommend if you want a really chill and introspective slice of life
realizing a headcanon of yours happens to make an element of canon even more heartbreaking when you hadn't even considered it from that angle previously

I just wanted to share one of my favourite and most underrated funny parts of Howl's Moving Castle. Michael is such a darling. It really does come to us all in time.
Also I love that when she first turns up in the castle, Michael REALLY doesn't want her there, but he still offers her breakfast and gives her somewhere to sleep and is generally very nice to her.
