Absolutely, and they try and hide it behind a veil of 'concern' for kids (and then expose them to capitalist-friendly stuff they shouldn't have to see, because hey, eg. gambling 'boosts the economy!', or sex sells!) But is it worth trying to dismantle the one excuse that they hide behind like a crutch, by making kids their parents' responsibility? Will advertising simply move on to find a new excuse to gentrify online spaces? (This is a genuine question, not a rhetorical one. I don't know the answer.)

Advertising, especially online advertising, is designed to be as pervasive as possible. Advertisers and advertising algorithms are an invasive species; they will spread wherever possible and like the weed growing through the pavement, places that aren’t possible. Gentrification is a good comparison, this is just the digital version, like the Disneyfication of Times Square. I’m old enough to have experienced it in the old days, every time I’m in NYC now, I just shake my head. It’s a theme park where you can get an $22 hamburger and hit by a car, basically. And like the modern Times Square, the corporate internet only exists to separate you from your money, everything else be damned. To do that, you can’t alienate or offend yt, xtain middle America and their disposable income (or at least willingness to put themselves hopelessly in debt) with sex and bad words and female presenting nipples oh my! Dog forbid someone somewhere talk about equity and social justice! Us weirdos, queerdos, pervs, and poors don’t matter to them. We are the unwanted pennies they are stepping over whilst on their way to stacks of benjamins. Appletwitbookooglesoftazon doesn’t care about the free flow of information, about community, about humanity. They care about dollar signs first, second, and always, and don’t care how they get there as long as the quarterlies look good.
