We all laugh at the "Everyone is Jin Ling's Uncle" thing but can we actually talk about how the Yunmeng sibs and their various marriages/murders almost single handedly ruined the line of succession for like every sect. Jin Ling is technically the heir to two sects because Jiang Cheng refuses to get married, except that isn't really practical but who else? Wei Ying technically would be heir if he was re-acknowledged except OH WAIT he's marrying a fucking Lan, and his only kid is freaking Lan Sizhui who is, that's right you guessed it, technically in line to be leader of Gusu Lan because once again, Lan Xichen didn't have his own damn heir! And that's not even touching that he is A WEN! Which isn't public knowledge but can we talk about the fact Wei Wuxian fucked up so bad (or good??) his actions somehow led to a WEN being in line to be sect leader of GUSU LAN??? And maybe technically Yunmeng Jiang. And maybe the Wen sect if it ever somehow came back. So that's three. Best boy Lan Sizhui could pretty much lead any sect he wanted. And then there's the dumpster fire of the Nie clan line of succesion, which I think ends somewhere around Nie Mingjue's decapitated head. You can't really blame the Jiang trio for that but Nie Huaisang is definitely like two steps away from doing some weird shit like misusing that Lan Xichen was the sworn brother of the sect leader. Just throw them into the pot as well so he doesn't have to deal with it. Absolutely obsessed with the fact one of the main plot tools of period pieces has just been ripped to smithereens because almost all the dudes refuse to fuck any women.
...and while that is because of the gay you also can't entirely blame it on The Gays because like, Jiang Cheng's motives are something like... (1) hates everyone (2) trauma (3) doesn't want to become his mother.

jin guangyao had some incredibly ill-advised consensual sex with his fiancee and ruined his own life, again, for once in a way he could not possibly have predicted.
We fucked, Married, Killed our way into this mess, we can make it work.
So, the Nie are screwed. Nie Huaisang didn't learn corrupted saber technique, he has no heirs, he passes the problem off to Lan Xichen and disappears into a wonderful art career.
Nie sect becomes Lan's project. They have to organize it, purify the saber users, help all the cultivators restart basically. Who better to lead that mess then Wei Wuxian. The council is thrilled, but how are they framing this to the outside? If Lan take the Unclean Realm then their power shoots up and it looks like a bid for cultivation leader. If they rip it apart and share with the other sects then a lot of people will be hurt in the chaos. Easier to establish a branch family and have them take it over.
Well Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian are already there. The unclean realm becomes their problem. They take Lan Sizhui with them. Lan Sizhui was never officially adopted by Lan Wangji before, but now that he's suddenly the leader of the former Nie Clan he names Sizhui his heir. Forcing Lan Xichen to have to pick a diffrent little cousin to be his heir. It would be funny if it was Lan Jingyi.
Meanwhile the Jiang and Jin situation is easy.
Jiang Cheng snatches Jin Ling after Jin Guangyao is no longer able to claim guardianship, names him offical heir of Yumeng Jiang. He's safe from the shit storm the Jin clan are.
The Jin’s are in a power imbalance anyways. Lots of leaders dying to close together, the scandals and secrets all out in the open, no scape goat. They get knocked on their asses and a bunch of smaller sects nibble on their borders. Eventually they sort themselves out with another one of Jin Guangshan's illegitimate sons/grandsons. There's plenty of them, they can just hope the in fighting has cleared out enough that inbreeding won't be an issue. Just to be safe they bring in a bride from a diffrent clan to reduce the risk.
Wait... Wei Wuxian is technically a JIN heir too. He's in Mo Xuanyu's body. This is how Lan Sizhui can take all five clans.
