When you begin to plan your project, start small! Then let it snowball. I admit, my longest outline was a hefty 40-plus pages. But you donât have to go that far to get yourself on the road to a happy, fulfilling Camp NaNo experience. Even a skeleton outline will do as long as it keeps the story going. Hereâs what I do to get moving: Â 1. Start with your elevator pitch (a one-sentence run down of the who, what, where, when, and especially why of your story). Â 2. Expand that one sentence into three: beginning, middle, end. Â 3. Expand those three sentences into three paragraphs for beginning, middle, and end, adding details to each section. Â 4. Break those three paragraphs into multiple paragraphs for each section, adding even more detailsâand turning those details into potential scenes. Â 5. Group the scenes (and use flash cards if you want to, for easy movement) into paragraphs of action, which then magically become chapters! Â 6. Voila, you should now have a skeleton outline featuring three sections of multiple paragraphs outlining your chapters by beginning, middle and end.

Such a beautiful creation
âIâve always wanted to find a pagan group. Sometimes I feel so lonely doing rituals by myself in my bedroom.â My new friend, lets call her Ashley, took a sip of her wine and relaxed in her chair. Ashley and I initially met through Instagram. Upon seeing all the pagan and tarot content on
Usually at pagan events there is always a much older man, often with minimal social skills, who approaches me and begins a conversation. Â This usually doesnât bother me as I love talking about spirituality and paganism with new people. Â However, often the conversation takes a dramatic turn when he says something inappropriate and completely out of context to what we were discussing. Â This is usually in the form of the man saying something about his sex life in order to see my reaction or have me divulge personal information about my own sex life.
THIS IS TOO REAL.
Itâs not even just at events. Like, I went to a local crystal shop and had an interesting conversation about sensing energy with a guy who then went onto grab and stroke my arm and tell me âI can see that you get aroused very easily.â
wtf???
And then itâs the fucking awkward silence while heâs waiting for me to respond and Iâm like âhow do I get out of this conversation, this store, and this cityâ
:////
Iâve surprisingly never encountered this and now Iâm extra paranoid. Like what do I do now if I meet someone like this? Punch em in the face?
I think Iâll punch em in the face
What makes it even more predatory is when a girl doesn't recognize exactly what is happening and finds herself being used and quite frankly abused. And she doesn't ever end up actually seeing it for what it is. I rather be cynical of everyone than naive. That being said, we need to protect each other from predators in the community, and call them out for what they are. Shun them. Punish them. And yes, punch them in the face!
hey if ur ever feelin shitty use this

The fluence: who are the âfolkâ in âfolk magicâ?
My mumâs family arenât witches.  Theyâre not holders of any ancient mystical âfam-tradâ lineage.  (In fact, some are from staunch Scots Presbyterian stock, including the âno dancing on the Sabbath!â variety.)
However, they DID pass down a bunch of stuff - little stories, customs, all that, as any culture does. Â (And my gran took it and ran with it, loving and researching folklore all her life, teaching it to me and later enthusiastically joining in seasonal rituals.)
One thing in particular, which I grew up with as completely normal, was something the women of the family did: the soothing called âthe fluenceâ. Â Fractious children were calmed by this combination of forehead-stroking and deliberately radiating calming feelings, often with a low humming. Â Obviously these things are calming anyway, but someone really good at it - like my gran, rest her - could do it from a distance.
I thought it was just one of those quirky family things. Â âYouâve got a headache? Come here, Iâll put the fluence on you.â Â âUgh, X kid is being a monster, better put the fluence on them.â
Later on, however, I learned that this was, in fact, A Thing beyond our family - âputting the influence on someoneâ, which was, indeed, often abbreviated to âthe fluenceâ.  (Etymonline takes this meaning of âthe influenceâ back to the 1500s, and says it shows up earlier in medieval Latin.)  Iâd done it to jasminekor when she was distressed; one time she was reading or watching something historical, and a character accused someone of having put the (negative) fluence on someone, and she sat up and said, âOh my god, itâs actually a thing! I thought it was just your family!â just as I had.
Iâm not telling this story to show what a ~magical mystical folk-craft family~ I come from.  Iâm telling it to show that, when we talk about folk magic, weâre not talking about some vague people long ago and far away, but justâŚus.  (I think Pratchett had something trenchant to say about this, as usual.)  Itâs not all stuff gathered by Cecil Williams, itâs not all in books, it didnât mysteriously stop at some point, itâs justâŚstuff we do. Â
Using the fluence to calm a kid down, for their sake and the sake of everyone in the room whoâs having to listen to the screeching - thatâs folk magic.  Pointing out a single crow to the person youâre with because itâs bad luck to be the only one who sees a single crow, to turn the bad luck - thatâs folk magic.  (Iâm told this is a specifically Kentish thing, and I grew up doing it without even really knowing what it was, but to this day I still have the urge to point and say âCrow!â when I see one XD) Â
Ditto saluting/touching your hat/spitting at/etc magpies.  (For me: flick your fingers three times, spit three times with your thumb between your forefingers, and if youâre being hardcore, âAway with you evil, away with you ill!â  Tricky when youâre driving XD)  Any ill-luck-turning âsuperstitionâ is folk magic.  (Broken something?  Quick, run out and smash a couple of jam-jars, cos these things come in threes!)  Cross your fingers to avoid bad luck (or render a promise powerless).  Rub your wedding ring on your stye to cure it.  Throw salt over your shoulder. âSee a pin and pick it up, all that day youâll have good luck.  See a pin and let it lie, that day youâll see your luck go by.â  Hang up a horseshoe.  Keep a lock of your babyâs first hair to protect them.  Throw coins in the wishing well.
We do so many of these things without even thinking, and call them âsuperstitionâ, while looking for obscure lore from tucked-away corners of the country, poring over accounts of cunningmen and executed witches, and never look at what was done by everyone - what *we still do* - every day,Â
This too is folk magic, and we are (still) the folk.

Sometimes You Need A Friend
Well, itâs good that the place is having that effect on the owner. It means that it should effect her customers in the same way. And being able to relax is amazing. âIâm sure they will.â She sips her coffee. âThough some will just take a little time. Not everyone so readily accepts new. But most will accept it after they get to know you if they donât automatically like you from the start.â Willa seems sweet enough that Saundra doesnât have too much worry about Willa winning them over.
âThat sounds like it will be a big hit here.â She chuckles softly. âI think the class will do well. Get beginners hooked and you have a customer for life, right?â She shrugs just a little. âIt can be, but a lot of people follow it as a religion too. It tends to be a what calls to you personally for what to follow.â
And Willa is open to suggestions. Â If Saundra has an idea of something that might be helpful, Willa would love to hear it. Â And when she gets a customer base, sheâll like taking little bits of advice or links to new products that people would like to see in the store. Â She wants her shop to be what her customers need and want it to be. Â âI hope to make a good impression. Â Is there any events coming up that the town will be getting together for? Â I could do some demos and pass out some fliers about the classes if there is.ââ

Sometimes You Need A Friend
Fate has brought the two women together. Â Willa isnât the only one facing a change in her life and the direction she will go moving forward; Saundra is about to move into the next stage of her life as well. Â Some things are just meant to be, and, well, these two meeting was one of those things.
The thing Willa needs most is someone to believe she can succeed, and help her accept that idea and strength herself. Â Once she can get her feet under her and remember what itâs like to be a strong person, sheâll be able to move forward. Â And who knows what could blossom from this friendship.
Willa smiles and picks her mug and sips as well.  âThat would be good.  I like that itâs a close-knit community.  Itâs almost like taking a step into a world time forgot, â Willa says smiling over her coffee.
Saundra hasnât quite seen that it will be changing her life too, that fate has a little something in store for the brunette. But, to be fair, that seems to be how it always works. She can see the change and paths of others but in order to make sure she learns the lessons she has to she rarely sees her own path unless itâs a needed warning to something disastrous. Sheâll fall into it the same as Willa as she needs to and is meant to.
Believing Willa can succeed and helping the red head to find that strength in herself is definitely something Saundra can, and will do. She already believes in Willa, so itâs not that hard though. Saundra can see the strength under that doubt, and is ready to help dust it off and help Willa to stand on her own again. Plus, truthfully, something in her already pulls to this friendship and wants it to grow and grow well.
The smile on Saundraâs face grows a little as she cradles her mug. âSometimes, we really like the fact that it feels that way. Though, when we have big town wide events, it will feel a lot bigger because we draw outside tourists in and the shops always do really well. This town has a lot of fun surprises to discover.â
Sometimes that sort of thing just springs up on a person. Â Learning that thereâs something coming around the bend for oneself is always the hardest to predict. Â Itâs easier to see it for and in other people than see it in ourselves. Â Saundra will recognize her life changing as it happens. Â And hopefully sheâll agree that despite the bumps life has to offer, itâs all for the best.
âI like the sound of that,â Willa says, as her fingers reach to play with the end of yarn.  âI think this really is the place Iâm meant to be.  I just hope to get established and out in the world as I can.  Have some classes and things.  What about you and your shop?  ItâsâŚwitchy, right?  Can you tell me more about that?â
Well, learning that somethingâs coming around the bend for oneself also means that they can plan, and wonât always learn what theyâre supposed to. They may miss something if they can prepare for it. And then, why have lessons. As for realizing that the bumps are for the best, normally she does when she has time to evaluate her changes. Once she moves past them and has a little time to settle into them. She tries to be open about change, and the fact that life sometimes throws things in her path that she will need later on down the line.
âThatâs always a good feeling to have, feeling like you were meant to be in a place. Means you really are right where you belong.â Her head tilts a little, eyes flickering down to watch her play with the ends of the yarn. âClasses like youâre going to teach too? Grow your customer base by helping them to realize what theyâre missing in their life?â She grins a little, liking the idea. And, well she offers classes herself so she can attest to the fact that it does help in growing the store customer base. âIt is witchy. I carry books, herbs, and all other things someone might need to follow the path. Do you know anything about it?â
Willa finds herself relaxing with her new friend here. Â Sheâs finding her anxiety leaving and the coziness sheâs been hoping to instill in the place working on her as well. Â âI hope the town will accept a new person,â she murmurs with a smile. Â âIâm sure not everyone is quite as friendly as you.â
Thereâs a bigger smile that stretches across her face. Â âYes! Â I want to teach a beginner knitting class starting in the next month or so.â Willa tilts her head and watches Saundra. Â âItâs mostly secular, right? Â Unless someone wants to make it religious?â
