The other night husband and I were watching a documentary about the yeti where they were doing DNA analysis of samples of supposed yeti fur, and every one of them came back as bears.
Anyway, the next night we watched a thing about some pig man who is supposed to live in Vermont. People said it had claws and a pig nose but walked upright like a man. Now, I happen to know that sideshows used to shave bears and present them as pig men. So every piece of evidence they gave of this monster sounds to me like a bear with mange.
So now the running joke in our house is that everything is bears. Aliens? Bears. Loch Ness monster? Bear. Every cryptozoological mystery is just a very crafty bear.
Bears. Theyâre everywhere. Be wary. Anyone or anything could be a bear.
As the OP of this post, Iâm going to threaten that if this gets to one million notes by the 10 year anniversary on 1 June 2026, one year from today, I will get a lower back tattoo of the loch ness bear monster.
It's graduation season and having heard from commencement speakers recently, I've decided almost all of them are incapable of addressing their audience when it comes to AI. Let me be clear, the only things that need be said to graduates about this is:
Any human is infinitely more valuable than a computer that does not compute. No human can be replaced by an autocomplete gone rogue. Every human is better at their job than a Grammar Nazi trained by actual Nazis.
You will be asked and expected to put up with this and many other ridiculous and fleeting "innovations" in the name of corporate profits. You will be told that this one new change will accelerate work, replace jobs, and mean lower wages. This is unfair of businesses to foist upon you especially when they are obviously wrong and harming everyone else in the process. That is the business of those who enjoy power over others, do not let it be yours.
If you have the chance to pish back in even the smallest ways against this sort of short-sighted greed, then I hope you find that power within yourself to do so. But also know, AI will not last. It is a fad at present because it allows businesses to profit. When the initial burst of investments and wage suppression is over, when the AI companies fail to make good on their promises to investors, this fad will be laid aside for the next one.
No I do not expect the AI tools to go away, in many ways I'm certain they will persist and continue to develop. But it is abundantly clear that any promises of a new Industrial Revolution are nothing more than the blustering of the Ultra-Rich seeking to be the Uber-Rich.
Where you can, I hope you'll strive to make this world a genuinely better place for all of us. One filled with compassion for humans over an imaginary index of numbers and hallucinations.

i loosely followed thedimelionsâs tutorial for naturally dyeing a pride flag, with a lot of added research about natural dyes, stains, mordants, sewing, etc, and i wanted to share my results!!
process, notes, and more pics under the read moređą
starting off i soaked my fabric (100% cotton acquired from joann's during their closing sale, rip joann's ;-;) in a 1:5 mixture of soy milk and water for 12 hours, then let dry on a clothesline in the sun, then dipped and dried two more times (the proteins in the soy milk help the natural dyes adhere to the fabric, creating darker colors and better colorfastness)
while that was happening i started making my dyes, which involved simmering my chosen dyestuffs in some water for 30-60 minutes. i didnt time it, just went until the color developed to a point i was happy with
as far as ratios i didnât measure, but the more dyestuff = stronger color so err on the side of more
red: turmeric + baking soda, paprika, and yellow onion skin dye as the liquid base
orange: yellow onion skins
yellow: turmeric
green: red cabbage + baking powder (LOTS), turmeric
blue: red cabbage + baking powder
purple: red cabbage
for the red cabbage dyes, i added the baking powders and soda after simmering and just kept adding and stirring till i got the color i wanted. ((BIG NOTE red cabbage, and debatably most of the others that I used, are fugitive dyes, meaning its not a true dye and more of a stain that will fade with time and wash out more easily, especially without mordanting on additives like iron. keep this in mind if you end up doing this project or transfering these methods to cloth you will be using for clothes, ie washing and wearing more frequently))
i also tried to make a pink with avocado skins and pits, which did come out a lovely rosy color, but i didnât end up using in the final flag, which i might use beet or red cabbage + lemon juice or another acidified for next time to get a more bright pink
now with my dyes ready and my cloth dried out from its previous soy milk dip i cut it into strips and stuck it in the jars, which were placed in the sun for the day (alternatively, you could simmer the cloth in the pot) and then left to sit overnight
the next day i squeezed out the excess dye and gave the ones with turmeric a light rinse to get the grit out, then hung them to dry
((small note i reused the dyes baths to see what would happen since they still looked just as pigmented, but the colors are much much much more faded on the second go around. all in all its doable, but I wouldn't recommend it.))
now time to sew! i procured a second hand sewing machine specifically for this project and had never sewed before, but thankfully this required the easiest stitch in the game (a straight stitch in a straight line). i looked up how to sew a flag specifically to get those clean lines rather than just overlapping, and this video was great (shoutout Suffolk Public Library)
as you can see my flag ended up quite long cause I left a lot of wiggle room, so I just look up flag ratios, trimmed it up (and used the extra strip of rainbow as decoration) then added a white strip folded over to make a way for me to hang it on a stick if I ever so desire.
and ta daaa! i would still like to clean it up a bit, and do a zig zag stitch around the outside to stop the cloth from fraying further, but im happy with the unpolished look of it. once i figure out how to get a pink I like, and how to get browns and blacks, i want to make a progress flag and trans flag. also just started growing some indigo, so excited to see if I can get some blue dyes out of that.
while jamming my entire body between two closing elevator doors today, i was met with wide eyes, and i thought to myself "this probably looks frightening to people that don't have a thorough technical understanding of how elevators work and the history behind why they are so insanely safe"
and then i remembered the story of the tenured civil engineering professor who, with a running start, would leap and throw himself full-force at skyscraper windows in order to demonstrate their structural properties, until one day the window popped out of the frame, unbroken of course, and he fell to his death
Yeah engineers try to make things with a factor of safety and backups to y'know account for not just their own potential errors, but also unknown future uses. Sometimes an engineer messes up and that could be caught later on during construction, a maintenance inspection, or sheer dumb luck. If a disaster does happen it's also engineers that pick apart the incident to find the point of failure and learn as much as possible to prevent a repeat. There's countless examples of bad design like this. I don't have a good explainer for it handy, but the 1940 Tacoma Bridge Disaster is one of the most famous cases of bad design that has since been used to inform every bridge design since.
Sometimes it's not the design that's at fault, but a mistake or deliberate cost cutting measure during construction. I like Veritasium's video on the NYC CitiCorp building as an example of this. Thankfully no one was hurt and the poor construction was corrected before the building collapsed, but it was a near thing:
Then sometimes it's an issue of poor maintenance or mismanagement after construction. Veritasium also has a strong example of this instance with Rome's 2018 escalator disaster where multiple safety features were deliberately sabotage. A warning for those who might watch it, over 20 people were injured in this disaster (no deaths to my knowledge) and the footage of the incident may be unsettling.
There are countless examples of all of these, I just was on a Veritasium binge recently so they came to mind. That's also not getting into issues with a defect in manufacturing, an unexpected site condition (like people adding too much weight to bridges by putting locks on them _-_), or who knows how many other hyper-specific failure modes that have been seen out in the real world.
That's not to say the world is incredibly unsafe or that you should be worried about every escalator you encounter. My point is, just because something has been designed to be safe does not mean anyone should put themselves in unnecessary danger testing that's true. The world is all about risk, if someone is only making a decision that impacts themself and is informed about the risk they're about to take, then as far as I'm concerned that's their right to decide for themselves. No judgement to anyone who tries to stop an elevator door when they're in a hurry from me (been there, done that, & will do it again probably), but hopefully just one person might reconsider leaning their entire body weight on a railing high up on a random building.
Loved this video, but if anyone has a most important take away it's that no matter how smart someone is, they are still kidnappable. Please for the love of anything, be less kidnappable than Dan Olson
I've said it before and I'll say it again. We need a "This is absolutely NOT mature content" feedback button on posts. You can report a post as missing a community label. We should also be able to report posts as having a community label when they dont fucking need one.
I also contend Tumblr should add a button where people can anonymously state they had impure thoughts about something that isn't mature thoughts. This is for me, for funsies, to try and figure out how that could be true.
Thinking like a little flame in a corner that gets bigger/changes colors alternatively we get to grow a citrus fruit.
The amount of desire I have to eat every egg on that table is insane. Let me be the godzilla to this mahjong table. Let me wallow in my greed for this masterpiece. I understand him now:

Extremely fucking annoying when people at work send you a teams message just saying hi, because they expect you to respond before they tell you why theyâre reaching out to you. This is an asynchronous communication medium, you do not need to have a live chat with me, type out your goddamn request and Iâll get back to you with an answer without this whole pointless song and dance
Also need people to understand as an asynchronous communication medium that if I send you a teams message while I'm working late that means I expect you won't reply to me until normal business hours IT'S NOT DIFFERENT THAN AN EMAIL SUSAN.
Also Also you can check my status which I lovingly update to tell you what I'm up to or where I am if the little circle isn't green. Do not ask my manager "where is worker drone 47192 and when do they come back? They are needed for <task>." My status will tell you I'm out and will be back on a date, that I am eating lunch (this means do not come find me to talk about work. Prefrrably let me continue to read in peace. Fuck OFFFF Susan), or maybe I am on transit to the goddamn moon to get away from someone ÂŻ\_(ă)_/ÂŻ It's not like you would know if you don't read the little blurb of text I left behind
Man, we have got to stop treating art like it has an expiration date. That show stopped airing? Doesnât mean it canât haunt your every waking thought. Everybodyâs into this album, but you donât have the energy for new music right now? Itâll be waiting for you when youâre ready. That movieâs fifty years old and indie as shit? Incredible, you have the chance to share it with folks who might never otherwise feel that particular punch of delight. Books donât go bad. Shows inspire fandoms decades after theyâve wrapped up. Weâre still looking at cave paintings and statue work from ancient times and letting the joy of creation bring tears to our eyes. Thatâs the point of art. Itâs as close to immortality as we ever get. Why try to give that magic a shelf life?
Thatâs Althea Cromeâs work. Youâve seen her work before if youâve ever seen the movie Coraline because she did the teeny tiny star sweater and gloves for the stop motion puppets to wear.
