how measurements work in canada (ie/ badly)
@/teaboot
This isn't even a joke it's just what we do
@macavitykitsune IS THIS THE WAY YOU LIVE?!
EXTREMELY BOLD OF YOU TO ASSUME I AM SURVIVING THIS BUT YES. YES IT FUCKING IS
Tbh it never registered as odd at all until I tried telling an American friend that something was X hours away
I'm going to be honest, Emi darling, that is the least puzzling part of this chart. XD
Given the spread of our space, I think time makes a reasonable proxy for distance in a way it doesn't in places that are much closer to one another. Telling someone it'll take me 3 hours to get to a city the next state over, or that I have a 14.5 hour drive to visit my mom means a lot more than saying it's x distance away, yanno?
On a personal level, the pool temperature thing is the most baffling apparent-consensus measurement thing. (Cooking instructions these days increasingly come with both Celsius and Fahrenheit, so that's gotten less bizarre at least.)
The pool thing is throwing me for a loop. Are you saying you use different systems to talk about the air outside the pool and the water inside? Surely the point of a knowing a pool’s temperature is to directly compare it to the temperature of the air around it
in absolute tears about the pride module at my work
HOLY SHIT GUYS, I WAS INSPIRED BY THIS POST TO TRY MAKE THE SONG AND YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE THE SCREAM I SCRUMPT WHEN I DRAGGED THE TRAINING AUDIO OVER THE BACKING TRACK AND IT LINED UP PERFECTLY
Tempted to actually put this on spotify so I can secretly stream it at work...
Tagging @batshit-auspol because as an Australian you're the only big account I know who might share (sorry).
happy first day of pride everyone
Snom looks like the most chewable pokemon
if your flag is three stripes, horizontal or vertical, that are white, red, and blue, in any order, I cannot tell which one it is. you will catch me searching “flags stripes red white blue” and checking a cheat sheet. I’m not proud of this, but also I do think y’all are making it unnecessarily difficult for me personally

”those are terrible unrealistic chest compressions” yes, I agree, and it does hurt the suspension of disbelief to watch bad CPR in shows, but the person they are doing compressions on is an alive and healthy actor. and doing good correct chest compressions would needlessly break that nice actor’s ribs. so I’m not going to judge them too harshly for it.
woke up and found out the mini fridge I keep upstairs died so we ordered a new one that is both nicer and bigger and I am genuinely excited about it so overall this might end up being a good thing but right now, right in this moment, I need fresh ice and cold water. that is all the way downstairs. and the new fridge won’t be here until Wednesday
makes me so sad that whatever is going on with the production hell of New New Who is so slapdash and unsupported that they literally can’t lure any actors to the role. that show should’ve never stopped being a super low budget publicly funded BBC show. bring back bubble wrap monsters and kill Sony
Polls Wednesday!
Who is your favorite supporting character?

dislike the digestive system. do not need my flesh to randomly gurgle.
off the cuff ratings of various elements of human anatomy and physiology:
eyes: very nifty design only a little undercut by the viscera horror of something terrible happening to them. 8/10
nose: a lil goofy ngl but it works in context. 6/10
ears: also goofy, don’t like them, why do they produce wax and get infected. but the core concept is fine. 4/10
brain: very cool, does lots of neat stuff without having to gurgle, ooze, or twitch. 10/10
liver: like most good organs it is a calm, steady machine. a tranquil filterer of the blood. don’t like the whole oozing bile thing though. 6/10
kidneys: piss is actually slightly less gross than bile. 7/10
bladder, gall bladder: i strongly feel organs should not grow random rocks in them. 4/10
bones: very aesthetic. functional in sort of a primitive mechanical way but they give us an extremely useful set of imagery for death and time. 8/10
skin: terrifically design, though it does sometimes flake. 7/10
tongue, lips: crudely mechanical but in kind of a cool way. 7/10
digestive tract: why does it gurgle and ooze?? why must it engage in peristalsis and jerk and shudder? it’s not even the products of digestion I object to—it’s that so many organ systems in the body are at least on a macroscopic level serene and still and almost plantlike, quietly performing their function without calling any attention to themselves. and then we have the system that farts and burps and generally reminds you you are trapped in a prison of wet red meat. 1/10, only because eating is often pleasant.
heart, lungs: for such crucial organs the fact they have to continuously move feels so… primitive. we should respire by like passively absorbing air through our skin. our blood should be whisked around our body by millions of tiny invisible cilia in our veins. what is this rube goldberg shit, with an extremely vulnerable single point of failure? 3/10
hair: almost completely unnecessary. mostly functions as a way to further customize our flesh-prisons. that’s actually pretty neat. 8/10
How do you feel about the gurgling?
Good, it's nice to be reminded that my internals are doing their thing
Bad, I prefer my flesh prison to be silent
you are watching a well regarded TV show. there is a character named Donna played an actress who is fat by TV standards. she is arguably the best character in the show. you fear the show doesn’t know this.

how do you pronounce the honourific "Ms." in english
"miss"
"miz"
other
unsure/see results
really good "shocking number of people are confidently objectively demonstrably completely wrong" poll
i am losing my fucking mind
#we dont use honorifics in my first language so whenever i have to select options (usually for flights) im always so confused#like what is actually the difference between miss and ms#i like miss bc it sounds more historical and im a historian so
"Miss" means an unmarried woman. "Mrs." means a married woman. (both of these have origins in the word "mistress" as in "mistress of the house".)
"Ms." - prounounced MIZ, btw - is a third option popularized by gloria steinem in the 70s - mainly through her feminist magazine Ms. - which is meant to be a neutral term, usable for any and all women regardless of marital status (hence the soul destroying irony of the tags above). it gained wider general acceptance when geraldine ferraro, the first woman to be nominated as VP on a national major party ticket, started using it widely to avoid confusion, since she was married but used her maiden name professionally. eventually over the years it came into common use though i do think the brits are a little more critical of it than americans (as far as i'm aware lol)
And as a reminder of the contrast: Mister (Mr.) never changes depending on whether a guy has been married.
Traditionally, a woman would be Miss [father’s surname] or Mrs. [husband’s surname]. Her entire social named existence is reshaped by whether or not she’s been transferred from the custody of one man to another. That’s the origin. And that’s what Ms. is pushing back against.
If you care about the names people choose for themselves, you need to care about pronouncing “Ms.” correctly.
Midgee can flop onto the most awkward surface imaginable and contort into a position of more relaxation than I have ever experienced in my life.
