Sailor Moon and Lost Media Part 2
I talked already about the topic of lost media three days ago, but other things have come to mind. I don't know if it's actually lost media, but I think it is.
But a quick explanation: in some Bandai musicals, there were two Chibiusas. Due to legal restrictions regarding working with children, two girls shared the role. One played Chibiusa in the first act, and the other in the second act.
This is partly true in two of Nelke Planning's new musicals. However, the actresses alternated not by act, but by day. One day, one played Chibiusa, and the next, the other.
There are the musicals Petite Éstrangère (2014), Un Nouveau Voyage (2015) and Kaguya-hime no Koibito (2021) with two Chibiusa actresses but only one recording.
With the musical Le Mouvement Final (2017), we have the same problem, but Chibi Chibi is affected. It's the first and only musical in the fifth story arc where there are two Chibi Chibi actresses. Hinari Yamaguchi and Chise Niitsu share the role of Chibi Chibi. Hikari Yamaguchi is seen in the recording, but Chise only appears in the curtain call. Chise Niitsu, however, appeared again five years later as Chibiusa.
For example, there's a recording of Petite Éstrangère with Kokoro Kuge as Chibiusa, but none with Airi Kanda (only at the curtain call). In Un Nouveau Voyage, it's the other way around: there's a recording with Airi, but not Kokoro. Especially since Airi played the role of Chibiusa alone until 2017. (Although I believe Kokoro Kuge is the better Chibiusa, but that's just my opinion.)
With Kaguya-hime no Koibito, it's a bit more complicated. Here, too, there are two Chibiusa actresses: Yurika Kobayashi, who can be seen in the recording, and Erena Kamata. There's actually a recording of Erena, but somehow none either. Along with the 2019 Nogizaka version, Kaguya-hime no Koibito was available for a short time via a paid international livestream, and in this version, Erena Kamata can be seen. But that version can no longer be seen and has not been released.
I mean, yes, there are recordings of the musicals and many people say that's not so bad. But I would have liked to have seen who the other actress was in the musical, and what she heard about the song, and so on.
But let's get to something that's actually lost from Sailor Moon: a song. The only Sera Myu song of which there's no recording.
In my first post, I also mentioned that there is a revised version of the first musical. In the revised version, there is also a song that is also lost. In the original, the two inner senshi go into a swimwear store and sing a song about summer vacation, like going to the beach (her teacher sing with them together). The musical was performed in the summer, and the revised version in the winter. That's why the song was adapted to the season and is called Fuyu wa Nantatte. Appropriately, the song is about winter activities like Skiing, ice skating, Christmas and New Year. probably girls went shopping for winter clothes instead of swimwear (just a guess based on the context). An audio version of the song exists not only thanks to the program booklet that was made for the musical, but at least the lyrics still exist today.
Sailor Moon - Witches 5 Viluy of Scienes
Viluy in all versions: manga, 90's anime, Crystal and musicals.
In some dub versions, she has no name.
Viluy appears in the 90s anime in only a single episode: "Believe in Love: Ami, the Kindhearted Guardian" (the 33rd episode of the third season).
Viluy's name comes from the silicate mineral viluite.
Viluy is the third-strongest member of the Witches 5, with a level of 202 (half that of Tellu). As Yui Bido, she teaches the science class at Infinity Academy. She is the counterpart to Sailor Mercury.
Viluy was portrayed by three actresses in the Sailor Moon musicals: Nao Futatsugi (2002), Yuka Kuwahara (2003) and Yui Hasegawa (2015; she played Sailor Mars in Sailor Moon The Super Live from 2018 - 2019).

Sailor Moon and Lost Media
Lost media - media that is considered missing or completely lost. It fascinates people because it is something that you will never see, and there is a large community that has made it its mission to find lost or missing media. One medium that is particularly affected is silent films. Estimates suggest that 75 to 90% of all silent films are now considered lost.
But earlier films were made of unstable material. During a major fire at Fox Studios in 1937, many films were burned. Some were lost in transport or were intentionally destroyed due to financial failure or to free up space. Previously, there were no archives, and films were simply disposed of or were to be destroyed due to legal disputes.
The topic of lost films is very present in Brian Selnick's book and the later film adaption "Hugo Cabret." The film is about the fictional young boy Hugo Cabret who find Georges Méliès's 1902 silent film "Le voyage dans la lune." Many of Méliès's films are lost today because, due to a lack of money, he sold the raw footage of 1,200 films to the shoe industry.
Unimaginable for today's mindset. Then came the invention of sound film and the era of silent films was over.
Nowadays, hardly any silent films are produced anymore. An example would be the film The Red Turtle from 2016. It is a French-Belgian-Japanese production. The film is particularly well-known in the anime community because the Japanese Studio Ghibli is involved. Known for films such as Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away.
On this blog I mainly talk about Sailor Moon. Unfortunately, Sailor Moon wasn't spared either. Several elements from the franchise were never filmed and are therefore considered missing or lost.
One example would be the 4D films. Of course, they were intended for an amusement park attraction. But not everyone has the opportunity to fly to Japan and watch them.
Or the Sailor V anime which was planned twice and scrapped both times.
But the Sailor Moon musicals are also greatly affected. I've talked about this many times before, how many of the first musicals were never recorded.
The affected musicals are:
the revised version of the first musical Gaiden Dark Kingdom Fukkatsu Hen and an short version from 1994.
Henshin Super Senshi e no Michi and Kaiteiban (1995). It's for the third season. It's also the first musical with Super Sailor Moon and Sailor Pluto. Therefore, there are no recordings of the first Sailor Pluto actress or the second Neptune actress. It's especially unfortunate that a very short excerpt was discovered: a short solo by Miwa Hosoki from the first Pluto. I would like a full version, as I really like her voice in that short excerpt.
The last Bandai musical affected was the Special Musical Show from 1996. It is the most frequently performed musical and is an short version of Yume Senshi Ai Eien ni. However, there are fan recordings of it that have survived to this day. However, they are not of good quality and lack subtitles. But at least some of it still exists.
But newer shows are also affected. The original version of Sailor Moon The Super Live. Similar to silent films, emotions were portrayed through facial expressions, gestures and dance. The 2025 version was released on YouTube for a few days. But only short excerpts of the original version can be found clips or short fan recordings. Even the songtrack was only released in instrumental form.
A 40-minute show was also performed at the Sailor Moon show restaurant, Shining Moon Tokyo. Spectators were only allowed to film the curtain call. The restaurant operated from 2019 to 2020. In 2020, the restaurant had to close due to the pandemic and never reopened. It is unknown whether an official recording of the show was planned and never happened because of the closure.
A new Sailor Moon cafe will open in winter 2025. Whether it will have a similar show is still unclear.
But you shouldn't lose hope. For example, YouTuber Ray Mona found the Toonmakers or Saban Moon Pilot episode. The was an American Sailor Moon series that's half live-action and half animated. In 2022, Ray Mona managed to find the episode and was allowed to publish it.
Maybe there are still fan recordings of the material somewhere in some creepy basement, dusty attic or in the far corner of a PC hard drive.

Happy Birthday Mai Shiraishi & Iroha Okuda! 🤍 🌙
Mai Shiraishi's birthday is August 20th. She played Queen Serenity in the 2018/2019 Nogizaka46 version.
Okuda Iroha's birthday is August 20th. She played in the Nogizaka46 version 5th generation Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Team Moon & Team Star Queen Serenity.
Mai & Iroha are the only character not on stage. They was portrayed through a recording/projection. Her character is also the only character in the musical who doesn't sing.
Yes, I actually created a separate post for both of them. But when I was writing Mai Shiraishi's post I noticed that they both had the same birthday and played the same character. Plus, they are/were part of the same idol group. That's why I've put them together.
Happy Birthday Misako Kotani / Iwana! ❤️
