I've had a smart phone for a day and I hate it so much. I HATE IT SO MUCH. I WANT PHONE TO BE PHONE. I hate the modern world. I wish I had been born in an earlier era so I could be closer to death.
My mother used to say she would die before ever learning how to do e-mail and she did! I managed an e-mail account for her and my dad. I had to type up and print things out for them. I envy them for that! I understand computers because I grew up with computers but smart phones are a thing I resisted and wish I could've for the rest of my life.

random PSA, I know a lot of people use duckduckgo as a Google alternative search engine, but it always kind of annoyed me when I was using it because it felt like No Name Brand Google
I have switched to using Startpage.com and vastly prefer it. for one thing, instead of displaying an "AI summary" at the top of the search results (unless you turn it off, yes I know), it displays the first paragraph of the Wikipedia article, with link, whenever it finds one that's relevant.
also a waaayyyyy better sense of design than duckduckgo
also private, European based, least annoying search I've used lately (RIP old "don't be evil" Google)
Keeping a list of Google alternatives just in case…
i have one of those, scraped from multiple different rec posts:
Search Engines
Infinity Search is an alternative search engine with a special focus on privacy
DuckDuckGo is a popular search engine for those who value their privacy and are put off by the thought of their every query being tracked and logged. Uses bangs, ![site] for in-page search (sells your data to microsoft and draws from fucking bing)
WolframAlpha is a privately owned search engine that allows you to “compute expert-level answers using Wolfram’s breakthrough algorithms, knowledgebase, and AI technology.” A data search engine.
Boardreader is a search engine for forums and message boards. It allows you to search forums and then filter down results by date and language.
Based in France, Qwant is a privacy-based search engine that won’t record your searches or use your personal details for advertising. Uses “&” as a bang search.
Another privacy-based search engine is Search Encrypt, which uses local encryption to ensure that users’ identifiable information cannot be tracked. Metasearch across multiple engines.
Offering unbiased results from several sources, SearX is a metasearch engine that aims to present a free, decentralized view of the internet. Can be self-hosted.
Gibiru’s tagline is “Unfiltered private search” and that’s exactly what it offers. Requires AnonymoX Firefox add-on for privacy.
Disconnect allows you to conduct anonymous searches through a search engine of your choice.
Swisscows provides fully encrypted searches to protect your privacy and security. Built-in violence/porn filter cannot be overridden.
MetaGer offers “Privacy Protected Search & Find” through its anonymised search. A plugin will allow it to be made a default.
Gigablast is a private search engine that indexes millions of websites and servers real-time information without tracking your data, keeping you hidden from marketers and spammers. Variety of filtration and refinement options for searching.
Oscobo is a search engine that protects your privacy while you search the web. By not using any third-party tools or scripts, your data is protected from hacking and misuse. Has a Chrome extension to allow use in toolbar.
https://search.marginalia.nu/ an independent DIY search engine that focuses on non-commercial content, and attempts to show you sites you perhaps weren't aware of in favor of the sort of sites you probably already knew existed. Use old-school searching rather than query-based for the best results.
https://www.mojeek.com/
https://wiby.me/ - It’s goal is to index as many personalized websites as possible, and NOT commercial sites.
https://4get.ca/ it works a lot like SearX, but honestly better. It doesn’t have its own index, but pulls from many others. I think it’s the best for research, since it allows you to search for answers from different indexes, is easy to configure, add free, and avoids censorship as much as it can.
https://www.searchenginemap.com/ for more on how search engines relate to each other.
https://yep.com/ is a crawler
https://www.etools.ch/ retrieves from Google, Mojeek, Bing, and Yandex, like Searx
https://www.dogpile.com/
https://searxng.org/ (next gen Searx)
https://luxxle.com/ - possibly conservative?
https://presearch.com/ - good for academic?
https://kagi.com/smallweb - free/randomised Kagi.
Other Searchers
www.refseek.com - Academic Resource Search. More than a billion sources: encyclopedia, monographies, magazines.
www.worldcat.org - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where lies the nearest rare book you need.
https://link.springer.com - access to more than 10 million scientific documents: books, articles, research protocols.
www.bioline.org.br is a library of scientific bioscience journals published in developing countries.
http://repec.org - volunteers from 102 countries have collected almost 4 million publications on economics and related science.
www.science.gov is an American state search engine on 2200+ scientific sites. More than 200 million articles are indexed.
www.base-search.net is one of the most powerful researches on academic studies texts. More than 100 million scientific documents, 70% of them are free.https://cosine.club/ is an electronic music similarity search engine
new phone
I caved. The modern world made it impossible to not have a smart phone so I now have one. But I got the simplest one I could and its still a pay-as-you-go and the same number.... because I'm not losing my dollar-a-day plan (and only a dollar if I actually use it, if I don't call I pay nothing that day). Still only going to use it as I did my last, for calls and texts. And for apps when absolutely need be (being able to get an uber, or I see jobs where there are no paper applications and you have to scan a QR code to apply, or doctors offices that send you a link you have to click though.... all of which i couldn't do on my old phone)
I now have to learn how to use the darn thing. I chose the Moto G Play because that looked the simplest of all the smart phones that I could transfer my plan to, and also Walmart had it for around $50, so affordable and about the same as I paid for my last phone. I had the At&T store set it up for me though because I'm tech impaired. I'll figure it out and customize it with time. But I'll miss the buttons of the phones of old eternally. I don't like touch screens! Give me buttons! Tactile! BUTTONS!

new possible source of the buzzing
Have a new physical therapist and she's really nice and really listens! And is local! She thinks the nonstop buzzing in my head (over 3 yrs now), since the MRI on my head showed nothing, and the nerve test on my wrist showed little, is a pain signal from a repetitive injury to my left shoulder (torn rotator cuff... which sounds like a car part. Can I get a new one at AutoZone?) . She noticed a limited range of motion .... and the cracking and popping noises it makes when it does move. And that's what the tingling and numbness on that side comes from too.
So now I've got to find a good orthopedic doc who will do an X-ray, maybe an MRI, maybe surgery on that shoulder. Best thing to do would be to quit my job. Its the over 20 years of doing the same motion with that arm that messed it up. Same with my feet. Same with the dust in there messing with allergies. Have a job for health insurance. Multiple doctors tell me the job is killing me.
turns out I AM allergic to work
Got a professional allergy test panel done today
not allergic to any animal (yay)
but am deathly allergic to DUST AND MOLD
I work in a dusty as hell warehouse in a marshy area that is covered in dark mystery ooze in areas. Not to mention the various molds in my childhood home that my parents told me to ignore or threw a rug over or more paint/wallpaper over until they couldn't be ignored. Haha. Great. Even after I moved out the house got worse and worse I tried to help my parents keep it clean and salvage what I could for a decade more until it got too bad and they had to move in with me until the end of their lives. But that was a lot of mold to be exposed to over time. Was told by the doc that has definitely messed me up for life and the only thing that could fix it would be to go back in time and to avoid those situations in the first place. oopsie! :) .... >:(
my garbage life (literally) 5/18/26
Well the musician-formerly-known-as-the-boyfriend is back. His friends picked him up from detox. We are awkward roomates at the moment I suppose. Then I got a call from the detox saying he checked out AMA (against medical advice) I noticed he was still shaky. man..... He's sober and extremely apologetic and quiet but...... things are weird. Things are going to be weird. Its like a divorced couple that still share a house because they have nowhere to go but we were never married? but we are staying civil.
Also fighting with the trash company the town switched to because they rolled out new carts to every side street but ours. Can't use our own carts past Memorial Day. *growls*
And it used to cost $20 for a half a tank of gas, now its $33.... meanwhile the prez says he doesn't think at all about the people or the prices we pay and thinks we are all happy to pay more. WHEN ARE WE GOING TO STRAP HIM TO A ROCKET AND LAUNCH HIM INTO THE SUN?!
what you learn from hobbies:
consistent practice opens up whole worlds of skill that you couldn't imagine
making mistakes in the process of learning is not only natural, it is also essential
activities that you enjoy can give you more energy back than you spent on them
wow everything is so expensive
my hands hurt

My current "Desktop Doll" who lives to the right of my laptop, propped against the wifi router. "Charmz" Yasmin, who is so incredibly Y2K I had to get her, despite not being much of a Bratz collector. My hair was styled in the EXACT SAME WAY in my highschool yearbook photo, complete with those exact silver hairclips in 2000! Well, my hair was shorter (just below my shoulders) and a darker shade of brown, but other than that, the same. I added the sunglasses (not sure where from ?) and the silver Shadow High jacket for even more Y2K-ness. Also painted the lilac straps of her shirt black and painted in her teeth. Tiny edits.
My "MY FAVORITE CHILDHOOD MEMORY IS NOT PAYING BILLS" shirt, for those who were curious, since a lot of people hearted that commentary. Sorry for the blurry pic. You can find your own online. Designs may vary.
The Muppet Show (1976 – 1981)
DC Superhero Collector dolls from Jaaks Pacific
$39.97 and will be available exclusively at Walmart and Walmart.com.
I want the Harley Quinn! The others... pass. PI and Catwoman don't look fierce enough (the faces). Supergirl looks like she was designed by parents, not any comics version I can think of? Could be wrong! But I don't like her doll either.
At first I went WHY $40 ???? Why not $25-30? Then I remembered oh yeah licensed characters (WB usually works with Mattel at that, instead of Jaaks), fully articulated.... AND tariffs.... and dolls are made of plastic... plastic is made from oil.... and war with a country that is holding up global oil supply... THAT. womp womp.
Its hermit time
Just thinking of the conversation I had on the back porch last week with the then-boyfriend!
Me: You don't have to worry about me ever cheating on you. Or even dating anyone after you. If this relationship doesn't work out, I'm going to become a hermit.
Him: It'll work out.
But will it? WILL IT?

Worser Worcester
Things not going well. Had a horrible night. One of the worst ever in my life. almost got stuck in Worcester. Got home after midnight. Had to take one of my precious sick days today and missed work.
"only 90s kids remember-" wrong, if you're poor and/or rural enough, old tech and fashion doesn't just disappear when it stops being trendy. We had dial-up until 2012
